I'm very anti Trump and would be considered a liberal... but I am open to dialogue on immigration reform and increased border/illegal immigration security.
However, rash and useless acts like a wall, detaining/separating families, and fear are silly.

Yes, I feel that the general public has no idea how big of an issue human trafficking is. I attend a seminar a couple years ago put on by a human trafficking task force and a couple things that was mentioned were nail solons and Chinese food restaurants. It was said that, because there was such a huge network of these businesses acting as fronts for human trafficking (60% of them if I remember correctly) that they couldn’t keep up with them. They wound find a child trafficked for sex from California to Dallas, TX, take them back to their parents in California, then find the same child back at a new location in Dallas within 48 hours (of course they would then try to prosecute the parents too, but they moved around just as much). Also, these vans that park at the end of the street and let a bunch of kids out to “sell magazines” are often found to be runaways that are being trafficked and exploited. It’s everywhere, and people need to be more aware.
Her views are well known, but still an illegal killed her. Her opinions did not mean anything to that animal.
Stephen Craig Paddock was an American citizen. He shot and killed 58 people last year. That animal.
He was also a "responsible" gun owner. Until he wasn't.
So would this be a case of a law abiding illegal immigrant until he wasn’t?
LOL. touche gruffy.
Ha, seems like that is a fair case to make in the AMT
hey, we can't have it both ways. I think it was a pretty clever comment.
Yup.
Unfortunately, back in non-quippy land, immigrants are less likely to kill you than the average American, while gun owners are more likely to kill you than the average American.

So if a family does not want a tragedy exploited for political reasons then you are saying we should not? I tend to agree, actually, and think that may need to apply to posts in the gun violence thread as well.
I have rethought my position................ calling a human an animal is offensive to animals, I prefer animals over a lot of humans.... my German Shepard was the coolest dude ever
I don't doubt yours was a cool dude, but I've been violently attacked by 3 times as many German Shepherds as humans.

Gun owners = average Americans, so I’m not sure what you are trying to say? And I believe the issue is those who immigrate illegally, not all immigrants. It doesn’t matter what the rate of violence is within illegal immigrants, as it should be zero since they should not be here in the first place. 1000 crimes from illegal immigrants is 1000 more crimes than there should be in the US.

yes, I know. but those that are on trump's side of immigration policies is that one murder by an illegal immigrant is too many and saying you are more likely to be murdered by an american is a red herring. just like when gun control opponents use the "you are more likely to be killed by a car than a gun" and we call that a red herring.
I'm not saying I agree with them, but I can see their point.
I can say "policy should not be driven by fear" all I want, but then that should be across the board, not just on issues I pick and choose. because let's face it, gun control proponents (such as myself) are driven by, primarily, fear. call it safety. call it empathy for the families. but the root of all that is fear. fear of being killed by something that should be controllable.

it happens daily.... everywhere... all of the time.... but we all know who Mollie is nationally, and are discussing her here now because of why I wonder? this case was regional and became national as soon as the perp was undocumented, how is this not obvious? its feeding a xenophobic fever spreading across this country and a lot of the globe right now, that's why we all know who this poor girl was
there are approximately 17,000 murders annually in the USA, how many victims can you name?
maybe its just me but I don't consider CBSlocal News as national news.

while yes this story was showed in Philly, it was a local news station in philly. what that means is that the only people who saw that report were people in Philly. now if was CBS news and hence seen by everyone in the country then yes I would consider that national news.
Ok so you want me to go link it all over? Pretending this didn’t hit nationally before the illegal immigrant angle is pretty weird to me.
Although ill I’ll admit I don’t live everywhere so I’m sure there are some places that maybe didn’t get a sniff of it. But it was pretty broadly shared. The fact that a local station in philly has the news is actually pretty telling if it’s national news. I mean you think they just randomly pick stories from Iowa?

ok, so I guess my question is.....since people go missing every day.....if it went national prior to them knowing the suspect was an illegan immigrant, why did this story get so much attention where 99% of them get zero? in your opinion, of course.

Good question. As I have lived in Iowa and still have friends I heard about it though them first. Mostly started as worried about human trafficking in the area along I-80. Then since she was missing and not found it usually makes an interesting story. I’m certain her being a Midwest, white, attractive college girl helped.
Do you think they were covering it because they figured illegal immigration figured into it?
Edit: I will add the fact that she seemed to be a nice kid with no terrible background and a college student would certainly grab a lot of people’s attention as they can related. So maybe that had more to do with it then white attractive girl...dunno.

Easy answer...ratings. The media only publishes stories that they believe their target audience will be interested in. What is the target audience’s demographics for the particular stations that covered it first?
