Should be interesting how it turns out tomorrow.  Latest tweet folks.....

I will be in PR on Tues. to further ensure we continue doing everything possible to assist & support the people in their time of great need. Very important that NFL players STAND tomorrow, and always, for the playing of our National Anthem. Respect our Flag and our Country!

There's a George Carlin routine about the ten commandments, where he analyzes each one. On "Respect your parents", he states that respect must be earned to be given.

As has been stated here, the origin story of the NFL players standing for the anthem involves the military (backed by warmongering politicians who often had stakes in the military-industrial complex) paying huge sums of money to the billionaires who own parts of the NFL (the league or the teams) in exchange for essentially advertising the US army during games (including this new 'patriotic' tradition), when dissent about the Iraq War was growing rapidly. I'm trying to trace the respect back from its origins and I'm having trouble - PJfan, can you help?

    1. Politicians observe potentially lucrative gains by having rights to resource-rich Iraq, regardless of the fact that these resources belong to Iraq. They sought to pursue undue access.
    2. Politicians recognized that access to Iraq's resources would require military actions. They privately invested in companies who could facilitate war (arms, security contracts, etc.), so they could use their political clout to give lucrative contracts to companies which would benefit themselves (rather than companies who would do the best job).
    3. Politicians recognized that to complete the military-industrial complex, they would require access to personnel. They partnered with the military to jointly campaign to promote the notion that joining the army is the best way to express patriotism, and embellished (or created) threats to national security, to give purpose to those indoctrinated.
    4. When momentum was lacking (and when a need to invade had not successfully been proven to the public), politicians and the army partnered with symbols of American life, such as the NFL, and the national anthem, to further equate patriotism with military involvement.
    5. Years later, when a member of the NFL observed a disturbing trend in violence against black people in America, he was able to give a genuine purpose to this movement, by visibly opting out of a disingenuous practice, and equate that opt-out with a statistically-proven concern of mistreatment by law enforcement towards black persons.
    6. When the President failed to act swiftly in helping his nation recover from disaster (and failing even more miserably at creating unity within the so-called United States), he criticized this opt-out, claiming the action's origins are rooted in respect.

Bingo. And he doesn’t give a flying fuck that he is.

Is President Trump ruining your country though? From this day forward have your thoughts changed about what you feel during your anthem at sporting events?  Will you kneel or stand now?.

I think the anthem is overrated.here in England we have some who are die hard respect people for queen and country but i have never really looked at it that way. Im not interested in our anthem and wouldn't sing along.I don't think most English even know the words past the first line.
I know over there in usa its a massive deal but why? Don't tell anyone but im not a fan of the queen either

  • All you NFL fans better stand today. That's an order.  Latest tweet from President Trump folks.... (in bold)

We have done a great job with the almost impossible situation in Puerto Rico. Outside of the Fake News or politically motivated ingrates, people are now starting to recognize the amazing work that has been done by FEMA and our great Military. All buildings now inspected for safety. Thank you to the Governor of P.R. and to all of those who are working so closely with our First Responders. Fantastic job!

At this point I’d become an NFL fan just to kneel.

Trump sent 18 tweets on Puerto Rico on Saturday

The words Trump used are telling. "They want everything to be done for them," he tweeted. "They"? You mean the millions of American citizens in Puerto Rico? And the not-so-subtle suggestion of laziness in Trump's tweets is just more of the same racially coded language that the President has trafficked in since the day he announced his campaign.

Yet he says coded things like "they"  from ultra wealthy country club while she may have to Wade through waist deep sewage water. Empathy my friend have some and the bad optics of saying such things from his bully pit. He appears to be unable to take ANY criticism at all.

So. Am I an ingrate if I think Donald is full of it?
  • Ingrates? Politically motivated ingrates? Me thinks some juicy news from the Mueller investigation is forthcoming as the Donald always goes on a twit storm just before another dot is connected or another lie is exposed. Enjoy the meatloaf while you can Donny.

Sure.  I think that if you're white you can call others that. Kind of like being black and being able to use the n word to call others that. It's racist for a person who is not white to call whites crackers is how I feel.  Even though President Trump has crossed some lines in your opinion there is a line that shouldn't be crossed when it comes to using some adjectives to describe a human being.

Can anyone explain why exactly I should be offended if someone calls me a cracker. I don't get mad because it's offensive, I get mad because I deserve to be called so much worse. There's a whole world of language out there, surely there's something funnier and more hurtful than cracker.

Like I said, imagine if a person who was not black said that same bit using the n word?  There would be hell to pay.

President Trump should not be called a cracker on SNL.
