Thanks for this. Really, this stuff deserves it's own thread (kinda like the Seattle one). I guess now that Trump has sent in feds, it's warranted to be discussed in this thread. But for the 40 or so days that proceeded Trump sending in the feds, it could've been it's own discussion topic. I thought of making a thread, but in the end, didn't feel like bothering.

I do not support the federal officers going out patrolling the streets of Portland, but I do support them guarding the actual federal buildings with whatever force is needed to do so.
....even if the governor did not request their assistance? Doesn't that go against everything conservatives once stood for regarding states rights?
federal property. the interiors of which have federal protection and not local authority in a security role. So yes. even if the governor or mayor didnt ask.  They just need to go no further than the sidewalks surrounding said federal property.
Now the governors need to call up their national guards to stand facing those fucks and protect their states citizens exercising their rights.

Exactly, I’m glad someone gets it!
frankly I think the feds should have asked for state and local help to block access to these facilities
I agree. Unfortunately, the states this is happening in do not have leadership willing to ask for federal support at this time as that would be seen as siding with Trump.
Your theory about states being reluctant to seek federal support for fear of being seen as supporting trump would be awesome if a ton of blue states hadn’t been asking for federal support in dealing with the pandemic.

    Edit:

That’s a great point!  So either the state politicians don’t feel the need to protect federal buildings or they are afraid of protecting them on any level.  Because they were definitely at risk of being burned down, there was plenty of evidence of that.
How many federal buildings have actually been burned down in Oregon?
They set the federal courthouse in Portland on fire. Not sure about any other federal buildings.

Kind of. Fireworks set off nearby started debris in the street and by the fence on fire. The building itself, no.
Andy Ngo....not exactly an unbiased source...
I knew someone would respond like this. He’s the guy that’s posts videos of this stuff. Whether he’s biased or not (which he is) doesn’t matter cause they’re not fake videos. It's just as biased on the other side to show Trump's "stormtroopers" arresting people and not show the stuff that Ngo shows.
I'm not saying his videos are not real. I'm saying he is well known for putting up videos that are out of context which are designed to influence his agenda and make certainly groups look bad. Apparently this one is like that if all we're seeing here is a fireworks  outside of the courthouse. The courthouse was not on fire as he says in the caption. He is not a journalist.

    This is from last night.

Got anything from before the federal stormtroopers moved in?

I'm trying to understand why conservatives are making excuses for fascism in the streets of America, and so far I've seen little to no evidence that the Portland authorities were allowing federal buildings to be destroyed to the point where federal thugs needed to be mobilized to march through the streets assaulting peaceful protesters & making secret arrests.

Some Elk statue thing was burned down....

And I guess where the statue used to stand is a popular place for fires now....

I don't condone mobs tearing down / burning statues, regardless of what those statues symbolize (mobilize and get them removed the right way).

I also don't condone federal troops making secret arrests because people lit fire to 'some elk statue thing', do you?   (For what it's worth, it wasn't "burned down" which I infer as being destroyed, it was damaged when protesters lit fire to it. The regional arts council had it removed for safety. Semantics? Perhaps, but words matter.)

While on the subject, is that elk even on federal property? I understand it sits near the justice center, but is it federal jurisdiction? & even if it is, does the burning of it justify violating other people's 1st amendment rights (among others)?

Side note, but still related: Are federal buildings in Albuquerque being threatened as well? Because they plan to send these secret police there too.

lastly: Andy Ngo is an 'interesting' source to say the least. I'm not refuting what you're relaying from him here, but he has a pretty interesting backstory.

-I'm not condoning the federal troops. I say let Portland be Portland. If they want graffiti everywhere and fires in the streets, let them have at it.

    -Yes, total semantics.

-If I knew how, I'd just lift Ngo's videos without crediting him, because I know how it works around here. All the negative videos from these George Floyd protests/demonstrations/riots are posted by right-wingers, and often dismissed by people that oppose those right-wing "narratives."

Oh I know he's a biased anti-Antifa person, and not a journalist. But this is all there is to go on for the opposing view. Biased people on the left would have you think it's just a peaceful love fest. Biased people on the right would have you believe it's complete anarchy. The truth is somewhere in the middle.

No payroll tax cut in the Senate bill.  So much winning for Trump.

But let's not forget the situation.  Democrats passed their bill two months ago, in anticipation of the expiration of relief in one week.  But Republicans in the Senate and the WH are frantically trying to get something done.  Why?  Who knows.  It could be because McConnell is so useless he can't advance a bill unless staring over a cliff.  Or it could be because they all believed in magic, and that the virus would just disappear in the summer.  Either way, it's hard to see a scenario where at least one check isn't missed at this point.
last minute is a way to force shit through...
    Yes I agree, it's a strategy.  It's a sad one though.

This is why it's best to go off of news reports instead of random people on twitter. I think the journalist who broke the story of the fed agents being there was from a local Oregon PBS outlet.

Please watch and listen to this.
It clearly explains where we are and where we are heading if this current white house regime is allowed to continue they way it's going.
It's from 2018 but definitely applies today, tomorrow, and through the next few months.

His followers are so blinded by the threats of socialism and the violation of the 2nd amendment that they can’t see what’s right in front of their face. Or they simply don’t care and just want to brag that they won 4 years ago and will win again this year, not unlike the smack talk the festers in the sports threads around here.

I’m surrounded by these idiots and the willingness some of these people have for going to war or starting a revolution over a different political party having the figure head is too much to handle sometimes.

Yeah I get it, the Duke thing hangs over them. They retracted it and it was years ago. But I don't consider them to be anything other than a major publication who has a liberal bias.

But Ngo, on the other hand, is known to fabricate stories and purposely provoke antifa, throwing himself in the middle of the story to report on it. He tries to further create havoc so he can get attention for reporting on it. Having an affiliation with antifa's adversary, proud boys, gives him physical support if he needs it...and it also causes a massive conflict of interest rendering anything he reports on with this subject to be questionable at best. Some might even call it...fake.

Please watch and listen to this.
It clearly explains where we are and where we are heading if this current white house regime is allowed to continue they way it's going.
It's from 2018 but definitely applies today, tomorrow, and through the next few months.

Each day, it's becoming clearer and clearer. Yet I feel paralyzed and unable to do anything to stop it. Most of us think that showing up at the polls in November is going to make this go away. I'm not so sure anymore as we edge closer and closer to the election. What happens IF we lose? We have to wrestle with that question as much as we wrestle with the question of what do we do IF Trump refuses to step down.
