    Some presidents, when they get into trouble before an election, try to “wag the dog” by starting a war abroad. Donald Trump seems ready to wag the dog by starting a war at home. Be afraid — he just might get his wish.
    How did we get here? Well, when historians summarize the Trump team’s approach to dealing with the coronavirus, it will take only a few paragraphs:
    “They talked as if they were locking down like China. They acted as if they were going for herd immunity like Sweden. They prepared for neither. And they claimed to be superior to both. In the end, they got the worst of all worlds — uncontrolled viral spread and an unemployment catastrophe.
    “So, in a desperate effort to salvage his campaign, Trump turned to the Middle East Dictator’s Official Handbook and found just what he was looking for, the chapter titled, ‘What to Do When Your People Turn Against You?’
    “Answer: Turn them against each other and then present yourself as the only source of law and order.”

    Well, there are a lot of brown people in Albuquerque. They may have been born here, and pre-dated the white man there, but still - brown.

    These troops will apparently not be the same riot troops they sent into Portland. They'll be "Operation Legend" troops sent in to deal with more "traditional" violent crime rather than riots and protests.

    @PJPOWER --Trump is sending federal troops to Chicago and Albuquerque now. Govs and mayors are against it. He also suggested sending them to Chicago and Philly among other places. They will not be there to guard federal buildings.

    Okay, I am outraged that the federal troops are doing anything beyond guarding the federal buildings.  I am equally outraged that wannabe anarchist asshats are trying to destroy federal buildings under the guise of BLM.

    Your theory about states being reluctant to seek federal support for fear of being seen as supporting trump would be awesome if a ton of blue states hadn’t been asking for federal support in dealing with the pandemic.

    its amazing the level of concern King Turd and the Turdettes are expressing about violence in cities, especially when they haven’t had any concern about anything the last 3 1/2 years. Nothing more than laying the ground work to suppress and contest the upcoming elections.

    That’s a great point!  So either the state politicians don’t feel the need to protect federal buildings or they are afraid of protecting them on any level.  Because they were definitely at risk of being burned down, there was plenty of evidence of that.
