This is so horrible, it's hard to find words.

I didn't know there was alligators that close to hotels.
  • Take this comment for what it is! What is with parents now a days? The zoo in Cinci and now this. The sign that said "no swimming" and you let a two year old just wade on in. WTF!

On a side note. I hear ISIS is taking credit for it.

Sad for the kid they get saddled with parents like that.

you could definitely go armchair QB into 'what were you thinking'.... But I'm sure that this has ruined the lives of these parents. Hopefully the pioneer justice/judging of the internet age shows some compassion

Even though the boy was in a foot of water this happened after 9:00pm when it was apparently dark at that time.

I'm pretty sure one will be put up now.

I lived in a equestrian community where we had a lake directly behind the house. Alligators were in there from 3-9ft, they would come out to warm themselves on the banks. At times they would come up to the driveway and our dog Snoopy (Dachshund) would bark incessantly at them. I feared they could pull him but a wildlife refuge hunter over time removed all of them. They were beautiful to look at from a distance but scary when they were on the banks near the house.

    Peace

I assume there's an alligator in almost every standing body of water in Florida (feel free to correct if I'm mistaken). I'm really surprised Disney isn't a little more proactive with signs around their resorts.

Not trying to assign blame here, just surprised based on what I know having traveled there a handful of times.

The reptiles are just doing their thing. Always an uneasy situation when major predators coexist with humans.

I agree that the signage could have been much more clear. I would personally have had no idea that there would be alligators in a lake at the resort that could pose a risk to those near the shore or at the water's edge. A two year old obviously isn't going to be going in very far; the family likely had no idea that it wasn't safe to just wade in, as opposed to swimming.

There's some truth to that and there's water everywhere even in our canals.

  • yeah, a sign just reading "no swimming" isn't exactly very detailed. you wouldn't assume alligators would be that close to a disney resort without some kind of warning. a 2 year old ankle deep isn't very far in. I wouldn't be so quick to judge the parents on this one. what a fucking nightmare.

As erroneous as it was... I don't feel this is on the same level as the mom who let her child slip from sight at the zoo.

If this family from Nebraska doesn't frequent Florida, I would expect they would be in the same boat.

I'm no regular down there, but I've seen alligators come up on the shore to lie in the sun; I've seen them floating in small ponds that rest inside of the bodies of water inside of highway off ramps...... those f'ers are everywhere and can grow pretty big.

Which again, is why I'm surprised Disney doesn't have more clear signage. I'm not trying to assign blame, I'm just surprised.

It is what it is, I feel so God damn bad for the family. That child's parents will take this to the grave.

hard to say, really. I wasn't there for either incident, and without sufficient video, so I shall reserve judgement.

Honestly, in that situation I blame the zoo. Yes, the mother let the kid out of her sight, but that stuff can happen pretty quickly....... If a 3 year old can quickly and easily wander / fall into a gorilla exhibit, it's not a very secure enclosure. Add in the fact that zoos should expect large groups of kids wandering around, and I think you really have to look at the design of the enclosure as the #1 problem there.

    Just my $0.02.

yeah, I agree. Especially with the inviting beach sloping gently into the water.

You would imagine that Disney was aware of alligators on it's property. You would think the amount of security at a place like that would prevent it, but it is Florida.

they are definitely all over the state ... still, it's a resort for tourists ... not all tourists are gonna suspect anything especially from a "no swimming" sign ... which could be up for a multitude of reasons ...

So they trapped at least 5 gators before finding the boy ... I think that stands to reason Disney should have been aware of the potential danger. I'm surprised their risk management team let this fester.
