Fear Inoculum’s release caps off
over a decade of speculation and anticipation, with confirmation of the
release arriving in May as the band flashed “August 30” from the stage
as they performed two new songs: “Descending” and “Invincible.”
As August arrived, TOOL released their back catalog via digital service providers, seeing Opiate, Undertow, Ænima, Lateralus and 10,000 Days rack
up in excess of 20 million streams in the subsequent 48 hours and
occupy the top five spots on iTunes’ Top 10 Album Charts. 23 years after
its initial release, Ænima re-entered Billboard’s Top 200, arriving at #10, with Lateralus (#16), 10,000 Days (#18) and Undertow (#19) landing in the Top 20. TOOL’s debut release, 1992’s Opiate EP, made its Billboard chart premiere, arrived at #59. The band also broke records that week: taking four of the top five spots on Billboard’s Hard Rock Albums chart (the first act to achieve that feat upon digital release) and claiming 15 (of 25) spots on Billboard’s Rock Digital Song Sales chart.
The title track arrived as details surrounding the collection surfaced, including a limited-edition CD version of Fear Inoculum.
The collectible offering, which was conceived by and directed by Adam
Jones, features a 4” HD rechargeable screen with exclusive video
footage, charging cable, 2 watt speaker, a 36-page booklet and a digital
download card. A list of retailers who have remaining stock of the
groundbreaking package can be found here: http://smarturl.it/TOOLFIa. A vinyl release will be announced soon.
7empest, damn, so fucking good! The record is a lot to absorb in one sitting, but really enjoying it so far.
I know music is all subjective, but the level of effort and detail these guys put into their music makes most bands sound like amateurs!
I wish they'd hurry up and let us know about a vinyl release - I really don't have any use for cds anymore, but I really want to hold something in my hands!
Sweet mother of crap this album is amazing. I just listened front to back for the first time, & with the exception of Descending I hadn’t heard any of it. I’m floored. I can’t wait to listen again & again.
I’m officially eating crow about my “gimmick” comment regarding the cd video screen / packaging. This is amazing, and worth every fucking penny.

Listened to the album to and from work during my commute, commute isn’t long enough so haven’t completed the album yet! Looking forward to hearing the rest and the album and finding time to listen to whole thing front to back. I love what I hear so far!
I like it, but I'm not as compelled to listen to it several times like previous albums. I'm going to need some time and more dedicated listening experiences to get in to it more. It's great that they've gone to a completely different musical experience on this album. They really do a great job of displaying growth in their musicianship so as to not really repeat anything from previous, but build on it.
Those interludes are almost necessary after these songs. To reset and get ready for next 87 min song. I’m loving it. But it’s going to Take a lot of time to properly rate this album, honestly.
Adam's tone when he plays single notes up the neck is one of the best guitar sounds I've ever heard. It'll take time to digest the songwriting and the songs themselves, but the tone and musicianship you can get more immediately and both are just fucking phenomenal.
Stars are suns to other people.

Love the album. Only track i don't really care for is the title track/lead single. It's ok but holy shit the other songs are phenomenal.
Love 7emprest, Pneuma, Invincible and Descending.

Closest city to me on the tour is Raleigh... hmm just far enough to make me question if I want to make that trip.
Edit - forgot to drop my thoughts. I am not mind-blown, but I do really enjoy it. Invincible is one hell of a song and so far my favorite. The time, thought, production, etc. put into this thing is impossible not to be impressed by. I don’t see myself just throwing this on to listen to very often though.

I’m really digging the album. Like the added segues, especially Legion Inoculant. Reminds me of I Am The Sea or something along those lines.
The beginning of 7empest is the most straight ahead classic rock I could ever imagine them doing and they pull it off surprisingly well. Wish Jones didn’t do the flangey wah sweep thing. Feel it would have even more impact and less of that recycled Tool sound.
Im amazed how organic this thing sounds. Thought those day with Tool were over. Lots of classic guitar tones especially.
So far, I wouldn’t say it meets the creative peaks of Ænima or Lateralus but it might be the best presentation of the material available. Just stunningly executed recordings.

I just burned my iTunes download to CD. Shame it cannot fit the interludes as I love them, especially "Litanie contre la peur". Chocolate Chip Trip is amazing. As previously said above, it is a lot to take in in one listen. I listened on my headphones and it sounded amazing. My friend told me he was in tears during his first listen to Pnuema! That's how powerful this song is.

This is a sonic experience in full 24-bit quality on good headphones. Wow.
Agreed. This is the way to listen to the album. The drumming really shines in Hi-Res audio. I don't know why they bothered with the archaic CD format. If you're going to put out more than 80 minutes of music, it should be done digitally.
