So, as we approach release day, the last album on my weekly album listen is Undertow. And what I've discovered is... it's been a loooooooong fucking time since I listened to Undertow. How long, you say? Well, I completely forgot about Hank appearing on Bottom! That's how long.
Tool has really come a long way since the beginning. I love Undertow, don't get me wrong, but this album isn't quite as deep, technical, or introspective as albums to follow. But it still is all those things and I love it. I really enjoy the brevity and simplicity as it lends me to see just how much they've grown over the years. They're unconventional, challenging, and thought-provoking with their music. For the lack of a bettter word, Undertow is like the juvenile that someone believed in and pushed them to do even bigger, better things. (Channeling my inner-Saban here.) And they became one of the biggest hard rock/metal/whatever you wanna call them bands in the world. I compare my views, ideals, and thoughts around 1993 and see where I am now, and it's sort of a congruent growth. It's like watching a child maturing into a strong, unapologetic adult. It's part of the reason I saved it for the last week of my 4 week lead-in. Compare the oldest to the newest as both are fresh in the mind and ear to really see how they've progressed.
I took Friday off. Looking forward to midnight!!!
Also, who else is awesome enough to do this?
Always been a fan of Undertow since I first saw Sober on a late night video show. It's actually still my favorite because of the brevity which is ironic because I'm a big fan of long songs. That said this new stuff is my favorite since then and 6 of 7 are over ten minutes.
What? Now im going to have to email and ask them why mine hasn’t shipped yet!

When I first got into PJ (well after they were established), I listened to Ten and then Yield (the latest at that time, and still my favorite along with No Code). That evolution was undeniable.
We're gonna do our first entire listen on Friday evening, hopefully with lyrics available elsewhere.
I can't wait for Friday, I haven't heard any of the songs yet besides seeing them do Descending live a few times. I took the day off work and if the limited edition cd isn't on my porch when I wake I will be heading to the record store. I'm looking forward to hearing a few of the new tracks live when I see them in October.
Tough to pull the trigger on a $70 CD but the music is unreal probably already listened to this modern day masterpiece 6-7 times. I want to wait for a vinyl offering but secretly want that CD! Lol
ONE more sleep in this part of the world folks. Wow. Of course I won't be getting mine till mid Sep due to shipping from the USA to NZ but will be listening to it tomorrow for sure. For those of you picking up pre orders from record stores, enjoy it. It's a special feeling that we don't get too much of any more. I remember the shit eating grin I had walking out of Tower Records with Lateralus on release day. Will be like Christmas for my ears tomorrow!

This is the first thing I have ever ordered from them. Not sure if I should expect it to arrive on Friday.
Super excited to hear the new album! I have resisted listening to any of the leaked content. Want to do the first few listens at home. Good stereo, comfortable chair and liner notes/album art in hand.
If hope can grow from dirt like me, it can be done. - EV

Album officially available on iTunes here in Australia. My commute to work is 30mins. Home about 40mins. Normally can listen to a whole album in that time. Not this bad boy!!
Looking forward to getting this tomorrow! Has an 89 on Metacritic. Also hearing the last song, 7empest is phenomenal.

After a week of listens, it is definitely growing on me. Don't expect Aenima. 7empest is definitely the most "accessible" in terms of what most fans probably hoped for, but the rest is great musically.
