I'll get excited when they bring back songs like H., Jimmy, or Eulogy

Lateralus! They really need to give The Pot and Jambi a rest.
Jambi needs to stay!  Incredible song!

They need to wish it all away!

To each his own…. Last night’s show was fucking phenomenal.

I’m happy enough that these guys are still touring and still sound as good as they do. I hope to see them again before they call it quits.
It should be very obvious at this point that Tool is not a "check the setlist every morning" band. Go see em live, have your mind blown, then wait for them to come back.

    One would think so.
& if you’re sitting around waiting for the tour where they only play deep cuts from Undertow or Aenima, you’re never going to see them again. Which if that’s your stance, more power to you. Me? I want to see these guys as much as I can before they’re done (& that day is coming).
Also, if you do go see them, don’t get excited about hearing the deep cut you were hoping for. Apparently that’s frowned upon for… reasons I guess.

Agreed but I'd still like to see a little more diversity in the setlist.

I think that's nearly impossible with the production

That’s a good point. Of all the arena acts these days, their production and style are closest to reminding me of Rush. The sound and lights are a detailed production. Changing setlists around is just not as practical as the “other type of live rock acts.” Plus these songs sound killer difficult to get perfect live, to my ears at least. Many acts can pull out a rare tune and “get it close enough.” That doesn’t really work with the song structures Tool puts together. I think that point deserves some emphasis on a forum such as this

so a mini review, I was going to pass on the fall tour since they announced the two NYC dates, but I do have work colleagues in Allentown very close to the arena, so I decided to keep the tickets and make the three hour drive and multitask Tool with work, glad I did.

The way Tool’s downbeats hit so powerful and off beat and their sometimes intense polyrhythms are so enjoyable and unique in an arena setting. A true metal version of King Crimson. They just sound incredible live, and their FI material is insanely good. Plus they expanded the use of lighting effects, which was very enjoyable.

I, like many fans, do miss hearing some of the older tunes live. We are about five years removed from the release of FI, and it’s still about half the show. That’s bold. They deserve a ton of credit for that.

FI is by far my favorite post 2010 release from any major artist I follow. It sounds incredible live, and to my ears at least, these songs sometimes make their older ones sound much more “basic” than I previously perceived. I know the fanbase is a little mixed on FI, but five years on, and still comprising half their show says a lot. This was my fifth FI show, and each show the crowd reaction was very very positive of the FI songs, which is a rare reaction in the rock world for post 2010 releases.

    Well said.
Re: the light & video production, Wednesday was the only show I saw this fall, but I’ve seen several FI shows as well, including 3 last year, and the visuals are updated even from then. They never stop improving their show.
As far as I’m concerned, they’re one of the best live acts of my lifetime.

I think the light show is one thing that benefits from their inability to write quickly. Maynard has his wine BJJ APC and Puscifer, Danny jams with a heap of jazz musos, Justin has MTVoid and Adam works on accompanying videos and lights for the live show. So it's funny when I read people complaining that he doesn't express himself on stage when him expressing himself is melting the eyes of the audience as the band melts their ears.

I'd say they are more flexible with sets light show wise than we think, it's just that Maynard chooses the setlists as he needs to be comfortable with what his voice can handle. Hence no Hush. Sucks that Eulogy is one of those songs too but any live Tool is better than no live Tool.

Great tune. Inspired me to pop it on.  Only rush lp I have. Dumped my others due to lack of spinnnnnage.
  • I'm going tonight, and have great seats. My buddy got VIP and here is the text he just sent me:

Soundcheck was cut short... but Adam came into the lounge and played Descending for us... all casual like... 10ft away... super cool.

    Lucky so and so!

Looks like him & Danny were hanging in the VIP lounge last night too, based on some picture I saw.

Concerts should be the furthest thing from my mind w/ what I have going on right now, but my buddy planted the idea of the Saturday 1/13 MSG show & I can't shake it... train down and back, no vacation time needed... it might be too good of an opportunity to pass up, MSG is a bucket list venue for me (I would rather PJ at MSG, as they love playing there, but I would take Tool in a heartbeat)

I'm not going to decide until at least after Christmas, but suffice to say a refundable hotel has been booked .3 miles away from MSG.

@nicknyr15 - we might be meeting up for a beer after all.

I would definitely recommend going to see them if you can. Danny Carey is over 60 and MJK will be 60 next year and you never know how much longer they are going to keep playing. They sound great and with the visuals and laser show you won't regret it.

F'n A, I caught the Boston show last week and am already thinking about the next one. For my money, they really are one of the best live acts out there. (It would also be pretty f'ing cool to see all 3 of Maynard's bands within 3 months of each other.)

& yeah... Danny's going to be 63 in the spring, and said a couple years ago he can only hit the drums this hard for so long... the writing's on the wall.
