Yeah ... I don't known either. Young people are already self contious of there bodies, are they not? I was in my teen years. I'd suggest bathrooms with ceiling to wall stalls, that could be costly. Now you're dealing with teenagers, and many can be bullies. Hopefully POD chimes in. POD?

Obama just lit of a shit-storm bomb that didn't need to be lit. Good luck trying to focus on anything but this at future school counsel meetings.

Berkeley county school district in South Carolina already set this mandate. Causing all of the parent to throw their little bitch fits. Thinking that a 9th grade trans is going to molest their precious child.

Solution: remodeled bathrooms/locker rooms with partitions using funds they get from the gov anyway.

In future building plans of public buildings just build unisex washrooms ... You would think people's funding public buildings would be more than happy to just incorporate unisex washrooms ... $$$ saved in construction cost.

as I just stated maybe the parents with the transgender kids will be the ones with trouble as well.
we're talking about kids and they do stupid things at that age, do you think they'll really just say "well o.k" some will and some will not, is that something a parent should put their child thru ?
parents should teach their kids to use the appropriate restroom according to their gender.

Every unisex restroom I've seen is for one occupant. The cost would be astronomical.

    From the article:

"A separate best-practices document suggests ways to accommodate transgender students: Allowing them to use alternate facilities, installing curtains for added privacy, or adjusting schedules to allow them to change when no one else is using the locker room."

Unless this is going completely over my head (very possible), this may be the worst idea ever. The last thing a transgender kid needs is to have to openly follow a separate and unique set of rules that NEITHER sex follows. In schools no less. This seems just as bad as telling them to use the bathroom for the sex on their birth certificate only they are calling this a best practice. I'm willing to bet that many of these kids don't want to wear a neon sign around their neck every time they have to piss.

My favorite part in the article was "does not apply to single-sex schools."

Public schools don't get much money from the feds. Almost all of their mandates are unfunded. Add this one to the list.

the people opposed to this are the same ones who want "creationism" to be taught as part of the curriculum. i'm looking at you texas.

teaching religion in schools to me is a far greater concern than having to make a unisex bathroom.

They are also the same people who want only abstinence to be taught in sex ed classes. If they even have sex ed classes.

Some of us who oppose this are concerned about safe spaces for women and previous female victims of sexual assault who see any encroachment on their space as a violation. To be clear transgendered are not predators but safe spaces for women should be respected. You either believe in this concept or you don't.

Is any public area considered a 'safe' space?

I don't oppose or support this. As an educator, I just see it as another distraction. In my school of 1200 students, zero are transgender . . . in all my years of teaching, zero. I've had one student in 23 years who had one parent transition. That's it, out of thousands and thousands of students' parents. This is just a whole lot of hoopla over a small, small, small group of students where a local decision could solve it. Making it a federal issue just raises a whole lot of fury that in my view distracts from the central mission of schools. When I talk to kids about it, I get eye rolls. The kids see the adults, again, getting tied up in a knot over an issue that does not impact them in the least, especially not in a way that will improve their access to a quality education.

Do I deny that the less than 1% of transgendered teenagers need a place to pee? No. Simple: give them access to the private bathrooms that do exist already in school buildings. End of story. Quit making it a problem for everyone else in the school. We're busy learning how to read and write.

This is so obviously the reality. It is amazing that this is being made into a larger issue.

What ultimately is the job of the president? To enforce laws. Is says that in the Constitution. If a state doesn't want to follow federal law, then the president is within his authority to with hold federal funding. It's really that simple.
