I feel bad for the fans attending, but I get it. For those saying your out money, still go, enjoy a new city. Don't just eat the trip because your not going to see PJ

Playing a benefit show for people fighting this would have been the best move I think....and tons of press about why it's a benefit show

I'm sure seeing them in Columbia will change it but right now I have a pretty sour taste over the timing of this.

Why would I want to go to Raleigh and not see Pearl Jam? I can have dinner and a good time at home.

I have requested a cancellation of my Columbia tickets because we can do whatever we want now apparantely. This band is a little too high on themselves and their opinions. They have no problem with five of them having unfair influence but not if five rich CEO's have too much influence.

Pearl Jam has a monopoly on being Pearl Jam so they know they can fuck over their fans and they will all be back at some point.

Is this real life? At least we know the band are big Stand Your Ground supporters! Good for Florida getting 4 shows. I enjoyed the 2 I went to immensely.

I feel bad for anyone that has lost money on this but the cause is more important than a band playing a show. It sucks that it was announced so late but maybe that's because they've been discussing it for the last week? This isn't a band that takes this kind of decision lightly so it must have been a hard thing for them to do.

Yes it's going to sting for a while, and there will be plenty of pissed off fans on here, but it's the right thing to do. I'm proud of PJ and Bruce for making a stand and for trying to bring this to everyone's attention.

Who died and made Pearl Jam the cause of liberty? They are a band. Play the show that you asked 15,000 people to pay you for.

You don't cancel a show 48 hours before it's scheduled for something like this. People make plans, buy airline tickets, take off of work, make childcare arrangements, etc. It's incredibly irresponsible for PJ to do this. Don't play there in the future, that's fine. But, right now, you need to honor your commitments.

sorry for all you guys that got screwed on this.

as a band and a source of music I love these guys. but I have watched politics play too much of a role in what they do lately. this is a punk ass way to take a political stand. you now are discriminating a whole group of fans to prove your point. some of which are not involved in the local politics of this state. or some that do live there but don't agree.
you damn well better start using these standards when deciding where you play in the future
every country , state or locality that has any laws that may have discriminatory content should be treated likewise.

and 48 hours notice? really , wtf guys.

How does canceling a concert do anything positive to support this cause?

Let's see, they added to the voices that are growing louder in their statement against state-sanctioned discrimination. This has been on the news every day I've watched it since coming down to SC, and each subsequent cancellation adds to that narrative. Even Ringo brought this story back to life, so it does keep the issue front and center. Trans people don't have a voice to affect the daily news cycle like that, Pearl Jam does.

They not only lost money by not doing the show, lost city-specific merch revenue, a cut of the beer sales, and everything else, but they also donated money to the people on the ground fighting this law.

No matter what people might think, if we could compare the news cycle between this and "Eddie Vedder trashes 'trans bathroom bill' at Raleigh concert," which is impossible, I have to imagine this will get exponentially more coverage.

The point is, HB2 has far reaching affects, it reflects a discriminatory attitude that is antiquated at best, harmful at worst and reflects discriminatory view that much of the rest of the rational world is against. It is relevant and it is timely. It was a good move.

Then my question is: How does this help? How does it help repeal the bill? How does it help LGBT people in North Carolina? Pearl Jam is irrelevant to most people in North Carolina. The segment of the population that is really into Pearl Jam is also the segment that is most likely to work towards fighting the new law... and they are the ones who are getting spurned.

It bring a lot of attention to an issue. What you and I say (unless you happen to be George Clooney, haha!) is a little quiet mouse squeak among a den of roaring lions. I'm glad when some of the lions I agree with roar loudly. (Lame analogy, but it's been a long day- sorry!)

Im 100%fine with transgender people using whatever bathroom they choose. But Does repealing the law allow creeps and perverts to freely use female bathrooms though? Honest question.

No, indecent exposure, sexual assault, and everything else that could occur in this made-up situation is already illegal.
    Gender specific bathrooms are offensive...

I would't mind some tickets for Chicago instead...
    Still pissed as flock though.

CHICAGO - are you kidding! How could any one play Chicago until they stop the murders?
Are you aware that over 900 people - mainly young Black men - have been murdered in Chicago during the first 100 days of this year already (as of about one week ago)?

I guess when you and 4 of your best friends for the past 20 years have $80, $90, $100 million in the bank each, it's easy to pass judgement on their NC fans for a house bill they had NO opportunity to vote on. Are fans going to be refunded hotel, air, gas, babysitter fees, and hourly work wages in addition to ticket costs? POORLY thought out. Simply looks like the guys are following papa Bruce, and seeking the approval of the elite they used to despise and downright seethingly loathe. ITS A FUCKING ROCK CONCERT JOSH....TURN OFF THE (POLITICS)!

Negative attention doesn't matter to the few who passed this. Neither does popular opinion. Neither does PayPal and Deutsche taking money and jobs out of NC. They are bigots and PJ not playing a show won't change that.

How crazy is it that Pearl Jam said they would come play Raleigh and then they cancel? How are some of you okay with such a blatant "fuck you" type of move? Did North Carolina beg them to come? Was Pearl Jam playing a free show out of the kindness of their hearts originally?

Since you are the arbiter of what is effective, perhaps you should be telling everyone else how to successfully accomplish things, if that is your natural gift that you are very stingy about sharing? ;-)

It will probably go to the Supreme Court. I didn't claim to know the answer. I know a cancelled PJ show means nothing though.

    It's not funny at all.
And obviously you don't see what I'm doing at all.
By the way, I incorrectly reported that there had been 900 murders so far this year in Chicago.
The actual figure is 900 shootings so far this year - not all of the shooting victims died.

  • As an NC resident and someone with GA tickets to the show (my only show of the tour), I gotta say this stings. But as a long-time fan of this band, I have admired and appreciated PJ'd political activism. I continue to do so. And for those complaining, I feel you, but looking back as far as the Ticket master feud, PJ has always been willing to make fan satisfaction sacrifices for their principles. Let's all try to stop feeling sorry for ourselves for a minute and think about how much pain this law is causing in North Carolina. If this concert being canceled plays even a small part in its overturn, it's worth it. See y'all down the road.

This is just wrong! Mumford played Charlotte last Thursday and donated their proceeds to a LBGT organization. I felt like that was a classy way to express their opinion on the matter. PJ is not helping the situation in any way. I am sure the politicians are happy that the band cancelled. Less people speaking out against them, is a win. Total BS move! For the record, I did not have tickets to this show.

I can understand people being mad about losing money on flights and hotel rooms, but the person you should be mad at is the sack of shit governor of NC. Not the band, who are just trying to do what's right. I live in NC, and the more attention is brought to this shameful law, the better. I applaud PJ for their stance. There are more important things than concerts. We need to let the LGBT community of NC know we are supportive of them. My husband and I had 10C tickets to the Raleigh show and when we get our money back, we will donate all of it to Equality NC.

People who still support the band for this are morons. It's the same people that blindly stand behind everything they do. This will change nothing and in a week nobody will remember just like Bruce. All it does is piss off fans and now cause more people to think twice about traveling. I know that when it comes to traveling, I am now all in with MMJ and Phish because they don't pull stuff like this. Regardless of how you feel about the whack ass law, this is a slap in the face to fans but they don't care because a bunch of you still just go along with whatever they do. Shut up, play music, and donate the money and rant away.
