I can't help but think that arrogance, pro-isolationist stances, flippancy, racism, sexism, and compulsive lying aren't exactly strong leading indicators for success. "Risky" change seems to be putting it incredibly nicely compared to the reality.BS44325 said:
I don't think people on here think he will be a "good" president. This is where the misunderstanding of his support lies. People think the world is facing serious problems. He could be terrible but at least there is a possibility of "good" compared to the alternative which has already been judged to be a continuation of the status quo.fife said:sorry i have been away from here for a while and have tried to read everything posted but honestly, do people here really believe that Donald Trump would be a good president or are people just trying to have some fun?

The majority of the public isn't buying the racism/sexism charges...that card has been maxed out. The average person might agree with you on the arrogance, pro-isolationist stances, and flippancy but they see that as a feature and not a bug. The compulsive lying? I think the average person just doesn't care as they know he is not "ideological". They see it as a man who is winging it as he goes. Flip-flopping is an irrelevant charge against Trump because he is looked at as someone who will do what is necessary to"fix" things. If something doesn't work he will alter course and try again or even cut his losses and not pour in bad money after good. For better or worse this is where the public's head is at and to defeat him Hillary will have to take a far different course. She will have to sell herself.benjs said:

A lot of Trump supporters are blinded by fear and ignorance so that they see him as a good alternative when they mix in magical thinking about his policies. There was an example the other day from Godfather where is was pointed out how Trumps policies would increase the deficit. He basically just said that his economic plan wouldn't really do that. Despite evidence against it. When Trump says crazy lies and unrealistic proposals, they say 'well he just speaks his mind', and that the crazy stuff won't manifest into some form of reality.fife said:sorry i have been away from here for a while and have tried to read everything posted but honestly, do people here really believe that Donald Trump would be a good president or are people just trying to have some fun?

I guess you're right that pro-isolationism is being seen as a feature (since it's in line with nationalism). Flippancy is not exactly a great virtue for anyone attempting to maintain diplomatic relationships with foreign countries, nor is arrogance, but as you said, people may truly put nationalism on such a pedestal that these are moot points. With regards to the acceptance of his "winging it", this seems like a very short-sighted decision on the part of the public: anyone in any form of project management will tell you that changing your mind on a design at the eleventh hour is a costly venture (whether your cost is in effort or dollars) - I'd imagine that the POTUS exhibiting these tendencies would be a fiscal nightmare. All of this being said, sadly, I think your fairly low expectations of the public's perceptions are probably accurate, so I agree - the Clinton campaign must react pretty quickly if they wish to garner support.BS44325 said:

I agree with you on the project management front but the public keeps hearing about his buildings going up "on time and on budget" so he continues to get a pass on this issue.benjs said:
