Hampton Roll Call

I grew up near Hampton and still live in the area. Saw my first show at the Coliseum, Journey in 1981 and many more as a kid growing up. All the major bands played here in the 80's into the 90's until bigger arenas were built squeezing this market out of tours in favor of Charlotte, Raleigh or DC. The acoustics are tremendous and this show will have an old school vibe PJ will embrace knowing how many classic rock bands have played here before, many releasing live recordings. There are no luxury suites, nothing corporate about it, seats are close to the stage. Got my 10c reserved seats and was able to buy 3 more for friends and it probably took 10 minutes to sell out yesterday. Fans here are excited and surprised they are coming so we can expect a very appreciative crowd, knowing its a rare treat a major rock band will schedule a date. No doubt PJ will feel this energy and make this a special show.0

There's a DVD the Stones released last year, from the vault, Live in Hampton from Dec. 18, 1981 which was a PPV show thus they had the video recording saved. I was there and it was my 14th birthday as well as Keith Richard's 38th that night. Worth checking out not only because it was a great show but to see what the Coliseum was like back then and how it's unchanged now. It's a busy but well kept building, mostly ice shows, car shows, circus, some smaller country or R&B acts. PJ has played the Norfolk/Virginia Beach/Newport News (Hampton Roads) market 3 times, all at the VB Amphitheater, most recently on their 2008 summer tour. Everyone from Bruce to Van Halen to Kiss has played Hampton. Knowing how much they like the older barns I'm thinking they might have been eager to come given the routing options through the South. Sometimes the Richmond Coliseum (similar capacity) would get bands to play there and skip Hampton since they are located along I-95. Straight shot down to Raleigh. Getting to Hampton takes a longer route, an hour drive east on I-64 from Richmond. Guaranteed Eddie will comment on the history/appeal of coming here.0

If you zoom in on this photo, you can see how close side / behind the stage at Hampton can be to the band.

DMB released one of their early Live Trax from there:
The 1996 Hampton New Year’s show with Dave Matthews Band and Béla Fleck and the Flecktones is considered by fans and crew alike, one of the most incredible jam sessions to date. The set list that evening reflected a nice array of songs from Remember Two Things, Under the Table and Dreaming and Crash. Béla Fleck joined DMB on stage for 9 songs and Béla and the full Flecktones ended up jamming with DMB for 5 songs0 -
