The Aging of Avocado

Looking through this thread it's great to see a big wave (chuckle) of opposing thoughts. I stand by my earlier comment of Parachutes being one of the worst songs the band has ever done, and to add to that, Inside Job is one of the best (top 5 for me).Manchester 04.06.00, Leeds 25.08.06, Wembley 18.06.07, Dusseldorf 21.06.07, Shepherds Bush 11.08.09, Manchester 17.08.09, Adelaide 17.11.09, Melbourne 20.11.09, Sydney 22.11.09, Brisbane 25.11.09, MSG1 20.05.10, MSG2 21.05.10, Dublin 22.06.10, Belfast 23.06.10, London 25.06.10, Long Beach 06.07.11 (EV), Los Angeles 08.07.11 (EV), Toronto 11.09.11, Toronto 12.09.11, Ottawa 14.09.11, Hamilton 14.09.11, Manchester 20.06.12, Manchester 21.06.12, Amsterdam 26.06.2012, Amsterdam 27.06.2012, Berlin 04.07.12, Berlin 05.07.12, Stockholm 07.07.12, Oslo 09.07.12, Copenhagen 10.07.12, Manchester 28.07.12 (EV), Brooklyn 18.10.13, Brooklyn 19.10.13, Philly 21.10.13, Philly 22.10.13, San Diego 21.11.13, LA 23.11.13, LA 24.11.13, Oakland 26.11.13, Portland 29.11.13, Spokane 30.11.13, Calgary 02.12.13, Vancouver 04.12.13, Seattle 06.12.13, Trieste 22.06.14, Vienna 25.06.14, Berlin 26.06.14, Stockholm 28.06.14, Leeds 08.07.14, Philly 28.04.16, Philly 28.04.16, MSG1 01.05.16, MSG2 02.05.160

Really love this album after not liking it when it first came out. Only "bad" songs are Parachutes and Army Reserve.0
-
Not a huge fan of this album although I gave it a good try in 2006. I can listen to the tunes in mall doses when they're interspersed with all their other classics on all the bootlegs.0

Avocado is one of my favorites! Front to back I love it. I tend to skip Gone a bit, but nothing for me is better than closers Come Back and Inside Job. First six tracks are just amazing as well.0

I too like seeing everyone's different opinions on each song. Such a great demonstration of how it's almost impossible to objectively state what is "good" vs "bad" when talking about art. We always have to know that it's what we like vs what we don't like, for whatever subjective reasons...Eraserhead said:Looking through this thread it's great to see a big wave (chuckle) of opposing thoughts. Re: Inside Job, the first time I really heard the lyrics I was blown away and so grateful to Mike for writing that song. As someone 12+ years in recovery, the lyrics are incredibly meaningful to me and I imagine to anyone else who knows, from deep in their heart and soul, exactly what he is talking about. Some of the lyrics can be taken literally, other phrases are more metaphorical, but altogether I think the song is a beautiful testament to faith and hope and redemption.

I love avocado. For me every song is awesome in some way. Big wave would be my least favorite but even this one is fun and quirky. I'm really hoping to catch inside job next tour. Don't have avocado on vinyl yet. Probably not in the near future either esp with tour dates likely to be announced soonPost edited by shetellsherself on5/3/92 Omaha, NE

This is my third favorite in the catalog after Yield and Vs.
Beginning to end it is driving and doesn't relent. Only song I ever skip is Big Wave. Army Reserve is underrated, amazing bass lines and fittingly grainy vocals.
It should have been their last album... What has come after has simply been legacy damaging.0 -
Legacy damaging? That seems a bit harsh. Yeah, they are inferior albums to what came before for a lot of people (very much so IMO), but it never even crossed my mind to let the effect my feelings about what came before them. I don't think that a bad album or two can damage great legacies. Especially not when the live shows are still so good.Karts said:This is my third favorite in the catalog after Yield and Vs.

I was listening to this the other morning, after maybe a couple year hiatus. I remember liking the album a lot but also feeling like the songs/album would be dated due to the war/current events subject matter.
I was shocked and saddened at how relevant the songs still are today as they were nearly 10 years ago...

I've actually been listening to this album a lot in the last week after just hearing the occasional song on shuffle. It has aged very well, in my opinion. Great album!
I LOVE MUSIC.

...and such is the ebb and flow of PJ fans (and many other fan bases as well).
The new album sucks. This is shit. Why couldn't the new album be better than the last. Etc. etc...
Only to find 10 years later, it's actually a pretty killer album.
I worked in a record store when Avocado came out and I remember everyone shitting on it. Blah blah blah. I thought it was awesome! It's up there with No Code and Yield (and Vitalogy and Binaural and Vs. and Ten and...)
Same with backspacer.
Same with lightning bolt.
I predict in a few years, the same thread will be made for these two albums.
Avocado fucking rocks! And Side A is a monster!0 -
One of my least favorite in their entire catalog. It really does nothing for me. And I like magicwhoanelly15 said:
