too many legislative requirements for the US to allow it and if they did, you would overwhelmingly make the US more democratic and throw off the balance of congress.

don't sweat it. It’s a grifter just throwing ideas and words out there to distract from the real stuff happening. It’s empty content.

I don't think it would happen, at least not willingly, but if they did, I think they would more likely to make us a territory rather than a state, so we don't get representation in the house and senate (kind of like Puerto Rico).  Republicans wouldn't give give us statehood and the votes that come with it.

That's all assuming the US will still be a functioning democracy.

They’ve played this all wrong. Instead of disrespecting us, they should have played trump at his game.

Hey Mr Trump, we’d love to join you! We can’t wait to get our 45 electoral votes and congress members to DC! Also, a bunch of us will be moving to Florida, NC and Texas and can not wait to vote!

And if he was to take that seriously and go forward with the annexation , he has shown the world how to win the legal game. The four year clock is always ticking down, and anything must be approved by congress. Just keep kicking the can til his term runs out. That’s how he beat all federal indictments.

If the argument is US democracy is done, then it makes no sense to argue, he will get his way. We need to have faith the US system will hold again.

Instead we got more insults, which makes him more determined.

What are you talking about? The problem is that he's undergone a considerable effort to mold the US system.   To put loyalists in the place so the system of checks and balances doesn't work.   He stacked the Supreme Court in his first presidency.   Congress is Republican, and while some republicans are moderates they're too afraid to challenge him. He's invoking powers that most likely don't belong to the presidency.   It makes it dangerous for attempting a 3rd term.  If there's no enforcement mechanism of the law (IE congress doesn't stop him, and the supreme court doesn't stop him).  The dude is efficiently removing the system of checks and balances.

I also think the "State" thing is a misnomer.  They might say State on TV, but in reality it would probably be a territory.   Part of the country, but no voting representation.  A la Puerto Rico.  Obviously they wouldn't give us voting rights, or even if they did maybe it wouldn't matter, if they put loyalists in place in all the government positions related to voting.

If your ideas of how to deal with trump on the serious issue of annexation of a sovereign nation could be followed by the word “psych!”, I’m glad you aren’t in any decision-making or advisory role.

At least more bands would come here. No pesky customs to deal with. Same currency.

Build a high speed rail system that goes straight from Winnipeg to Tampa called the Snowbird. Free Depends and dinner at 4, delivered to your car while you watch wheel of fortune.

    Yeah, no shit.

It's revealing and not surprising how little America/Americans understand Canada/Canadians. We're taking this seriously unlike most of America who is sleepwalking into a dictatorship.

We're not going to just rollover.

I understand the sentiment but I’ve always seen it as tasteless when a country’s anthem is played.

For me the American anthem represents its history and all the people. I’ve never seen it as a direct representation of the current administration (whoever it might be). It’s also highly disrespectful of the athletes (in this instance), some of whom likely agree with those booing.

All that said, I’ll reiterate that I fully understand the sentiment, but not this way of expressing it. Go boo the US consulate instead.

That’s what makes it so stupid. I mean, Winnipeg/any city’s fans booing the anthem of the home country of some of their best players is next level idiocy.

Just get rid of anthems in sports altogether. It doesn’t make sense unless you’re pro-patriotic indoctrination.

I wonder how the CAF member delivering the anthem felt in that moment. Another reason for me personally not to boo.

I would never boo an anthem either (it would by hypocritical of me, since I don't sing them either-I stand and take my hat off if wearing one, but I don't sing). But happy to live in a country where you can.

The U.S., both through the 52% that elected their government aimed an economic nuke at is, and repeatedly discussed annexing us.  I don't blame people for booing the anthem.

Maybe they should stop doing the anthems before games.  It does make me wonder, if the tariff's go through, and it puts Canada into an era of hardship, are we going to see things like sports and music stop crossing the border? :(

    52%?

last I saw it was 49.8% giving him the nod.

and some counties in several states are reviewing the glitches that occured during tabulation and finding cause to delve deeper....

not that those findings would change much at this point.

I preordered an album a couple days ago and realized afterwards that I won’t only get hit with the usual duties but likely Trump’s tariffs (or rather our response) as well.

I’ve already decided not to order anything that’s going to cross the border (fairly easy for me personally though I acknowledge it’s not so cut-and-dried), but I’m going to try to continue to support artists and such by buying on this side of the border.

So much is still up in the air, this whole thing feels like it’s been schemed up in its entirety on a cocktail napkin. Like almost every other Trump policy so far. (I want to add an lol because it’s always better to laugh than to cry, lol.)

Yah, that's why we haven't 100% cancelled our trip to Houston in June.  To see if it's a bunch of hot air, or if he/they really mean to harm us.   Plus I lose $300 for cancelling the westjet flights, so I'll totally play chicken to see if they cancel the flight first.

It would also not be good if he keeps kicking the can 30 days at a time.   This time it's, deal with your digital tax, so we do, and it buys us 30 days or something like that.. shrug.  Negotiations done by aiming an economic nuke at us aren't great.

Booing any country’s national anthem is gross honestly. Take the anthems out of sports!!! I’m sure the fans in Boston will be extremely respectful and show Canadians how to act like mature adults.  🤔🤔

Based on the injuries it seems the US team tried to send their message during the wrong game and came out worse for wear. If they were trying to send a message with the fights early on, the Canadians aren’t going to be fazed by it. The Tkachuks both fought smaller players and they didn’t have a scratch on them so that was nothing. Parayko has two careers fights and fed JT Miller. If there is an Achilles heel for the Canadians, it’s goaltending. Thursday should be a great game, two great teams going at it.

Funny enough, I'd take the anthems out of pro sports but not necessarily international (even though the latter is more likely for booing and the like). Doing it before all 162 MLB games is tedious and has become something to just wait out.

I certainly don't need them at international competitions either; but it feels like there's a better rationale when the literal countries (as opposed to the Dodgers vs. the Rockies or even the Dodgers vs. the Blue Jays) are being represented. But it's fine with me if we get rid of them.

As for Canadians booing the US anthem? I'll find bigger things to be upset about than boing the anthem of the country with a leader fucking with their economy and "joking" about annexation.

Maybe rather than being sensitive about it we can ask ourselves how we're looking in the eyes of the world.

csx line by my house. see nothing but coal headed north, assume for export through the St Lawrence river.

Lot of lumber/sheets , and oil headed south.
