And I just saw the chief of police on Chris Hayes actually say that when they held Ahmad in interrogation, Ahmad didn't have the right to his parents or lawyer being there. There is NO WAY that that can possible be legal. Diesnt everyone have the right to remain silent and talk to a lawyer. Tell me I'm not wrong. Is this real? No fucken way that that's the law.

No where has it been said that he wasn't read his rights.
They legally don't have to read him rights until he is officially charged and that didn't happen until the end of the ordeal. So what they did do was interrogate him unlawfully without representation. Also FYI according to the Texas Family Code Chapter 52.02 the way Ahmed was detained and questioned( without proper representation as outlined in the code) was unlawful. You can't pick which laws you can follow and not follow, especially if you're officers of the law. This was just a shit show of ignorance and bigotry and every time you defend it you defend those practices in our society. We cannot be accountable for our shortfalls and failings unless we are first willing to admit that they exist and what they are. Stop putting the onus all on the kid and start holding some adults responsible, for the love!

    Again,
Nowhere has it been stipulated that he wasn't read his rights.
  • If he was hypothetically read his rights then they still violated the law which states that they must contact and allow a parent, legal guardian or lawyer to be present for all for all further questioning. So whether they read him his rights or not they violated the Texas Family Code( a bunch of laws pertaining to minors for those of you that don't want to look it up), which is breaking the law. So unless you are advocating breaking the law I suggest you find a different flimsy platform to stand on.

  • Is there a timeframe that they have to contact a parent, legal guardian or lawyer?
    By law of course.

I'm not a lawyer but I think that under the patriot act it is in fact legal. Because he would have been detained or brought in for questioning under suspicion of terrorism. Which my auto correct changed to Taoism. Which is hilarious.

You're missing the whole fucken point. You a father? Would you be angry if this happened to your kid? 4 fucken hours without you or a lawyer present? Who knows what the fuck they were trying to frame this kid. Think about it. How long before they realized it wasn't a bomb? I'll give them the benefit and say 20 mins. Now knowing how dumb they're gonna look when this is gonna come out, let's see if this kid can at least give us something we can use as an excuse. 4 fucken hrs without parents or lawyer after they realized it wasn't a bomb. Why? Think about.
He can build a clock but not understand his rights?
    Unfair.
Stop it, you're being silly. And I'd say he did a pretty good job for a 14 year old to not give them anything worth getting them out of this fucken mess. Dude, you bug me out sometimes. And I'm sure I'm not the only one. It's like you post to go "against" the grain to just go "against" the grain. You know deep down inside that you'd flip if this happened to your kid. But lucky for you your kids name is prob mike and he's white as my eyes after I use visiene A.
I'm with you on this one. Maybe that's partly because I hope some people say the things they say on this forum just to get a reaction, as the thought that they actually believe what they're saying is far more worrying!

He was 14 years old. And I sure as heck won't throw out rights in the name of fighting crime/terrorism. We have rights to protect us. This is not North Korea.

The kid should never have been let to leave school property without parental notification.thats a big No no.And I'm sure there is going to be legality issues on that point alone. Most school districts have police of there own and if there was a concern the child should have been taken out of class and if questioning was to take place it should be on school grounds with an adult present.period.

Hey Ahmed,What is this what did you make?
    A clock.
    It looks like a bomb.
It's not a bomb,it's a school project to show mr so and so.Ive been working on it all week.Just ask my PARENTS they encouraged and help me..........

Discussion should have led to a phone call with 30 seconds of questioning.

He most certainly does have the right to be silent. But remember, he wasn't under arrest at that time. What's so bad about a kid being questioned about a suspicious device? You guys are throwing the race card around a little too quickly in my opinion. This kid wasn't beaten, or abused.

He can get the best lawyer in the nation and he still won't sue. Nothing illegal was done to him. I don't know what the protocols are for detaining a suspect, but it doesn't appear that anything here was done illegally.

I don't know why the anger of this kids parents have anything to do with this. Of course they were angry. Of course they were scared. So what? The question here is did the police do something wrong? I say they didn't.

People need to step back and look at the big picture.
Once you have a suspicion of a bomb you don't get "someone else" to check that is not qualified(science teacher)
Bomb squads check for you - no one else can make the determination otherwise once a suspicious device is at the attention.
The only mistake done here is not calling the bomb squad and immediately evacuating.
No ones rights were violated whatsoever.
"Uh, excuse me Mr. Science teacher I feel like this may be a bomb. Can you check it for me"?
Any normal person would say fuck you check it yourself. - or call the police, whatever suits your fancy.
The situation was cleared up, no one was hurt. Now the kid is making international friends at a ferocious pace. Sounds like the poor little offended muslim is doing allright. Good for him.
The suspension should still stand. Rules are rules at school. We all know that. When we are away we trust others with our kids at school.
This outrage is ridiculous, get over it.

Oh he was violated all right. He was forced to do a perp walk in front of the other students to the patrol car. At 14 that's EVERYTHING. For a freaking clock. I've heard on the news that he won't be going back to that school...looking for a new one. I hope they'll be able to find one with intelligent people teaching and administering.
    grrrrrr.

I know you don't post much or like to respond to posts but what is the difference between a kid being suspended or expelled for bringing a toy gun or even as simple as praying at school, after all the school shootings that have happened don't you think using a little caution is called for ? kid's his age and younger have killed grown men, the school and the people who spotted this "home made clock" should be praised for looking out for the safety of the other students and faculty...wouldn't you think ?

    Godfather.

I have never heard of a kid being hauled off by the police for 4 hours of interrogation for having a toy gun at school - usually teachers would just look at the thing and figure about what it really is, which the teachers apparently failed to do in this case of the clock - and a gun replica of an actual weapon. How do you not see the difference between a gun and clock anyway?
good grief you people......the only fucking reason you guy's are putting on this show is because he's a muslim.

some times I just have to laugh.

I'm pretty sure that if you read my posts throughout this thread thread, you'd see that I have not mentioned anything about his religion. HAHHAHHHAHAHHAHA !!!!! the bigot call ! but.....Neanderthal is new, I would like to politely state that there some people on this forum that are too soft hearted for their own good, the world is not what you've created in this little space called the train all daisy's and sunshine, there are kids in the world that under 14 years old can kill with no remorse, kids that have taken guns to school and killed, in San Diego yesterday 6 schools where locked down because of bomb threats, it might do all some good to understand what kind of caution and even paranoia has been created because of the attacks and threats since 9-11, you all want so bad for everybody to listen and understand your side of the story yet have no interest obviously in understanding anybody else's concerns, and retaliate with childish replies like bigot..... but this is my favorite so far, "...you are a Neanderthal just like two or three others here .... " name calling is always a last act of defiance here on the train and the creativeness is impressive, so carry on you barbarians of political correctness, go and save the world !

    Godfather.

I would also argue that the world is a bit different from your idiotic paranoid (bigoted) world.

I hope this kid gets the BEST civil rights lawyer or top dog out there and sues the shit out of the town, police department and state. These idiots won't learn until it starts costing the town and state money. Fuck these bigot assholes.

Anything to exonerate police! Broken record.
Anything to blame the police for the obvious lack of parental guidance of this little darling. Now that's a broken record. But hey, he now gets to break bread w/ Barry. I can't wait to see the picture of them around that clock.
  • People need to step back and look at the big picture.

Just the fact you called this poor little offended Muslim is repulsive , how about calling him
    By his name

Just the fact that you don't even address him by his name Ahmed is enough to see your bigotry , Poor little offended Muslim this is what you wrote ...you are a Neanderthal just like two or three others here ....
The title of this thread is 'The threat of intelligent Muslim kids'.

As such... your name calling is off base.

You might not like the perspective PJFan is offering, however I'm not so sure some can say 'his crime was being brown' or 'anyone other than a Muslim wouldn't have been bothered' (to applause no less)... while someone with a counter position suggesting race has been overplayed gets jeered and insulted.

  • 1) the teachers at the school acted as they should have. again, had this actually been a bomb, they'd be called heros, not idiots or bigots.
    2) I can't comment, nor can really any of you to any factual accuracy, that being muslim had anything to do with how he was treated. saying things like "being a muslim in texas" is just as prejudiced as what you are accusing others here of
    3) I have no idea why the cops needed to question him for 4 hours after it was found to just be a clock. maybe they thought if he could build this, maybe this was a precursor to him building something more dangerous. who knows. everything being put forth here is pure conjecture.
    4) if they were detaining him under the patriot act or whatever it is, they were not lawfully bound to call his parents or give him access to a lawyer. it sucks, but that's the way it is. I don't agree with that law in the slightest, but it's the law and they acted within the confines of it.
    5) as a parent, I'd be beyond furious. but there doesn't seem to be any basis for a lawsuit, from what we currently know.

  • 6) and Obama reaching out to the kid is nothing more than a PR move. that's what the POTUS does. ease racial tensions before they get out of control where possible.

    Lack of parental guidance?

    Seriously?
