The threat of intelligent Muslim kids!

GF it was how it was handled. The admin could have quietly called the police to have the device checked, or that science teacher he showed it to would have been very convenient, and that would have resolved if it was a bomb or not. (Not a bomb, a clock, ok we're done here.) But look what they did...some big stupid show with handcuffs and humiliation of a teen in his very formative years. Was it hysteria? It was just so mishandled. People treat each other like sh*t sometimes.Falling down,...not staying down0

I have never heard of a kid being hauled off by the police for 4 hours of interrogation for having a toy gun at school - usually teachers would just look at the thing and figure about what it really is, which the teachers apparently failed to do in this case of the clock - and a gun replica of an actual weapon. How do you not see the difference between a gun and clock anyway?Godfather. said:
I know you don't post much or like to respond to posts but what is the difference between a kid being suspended or expelled for bringing a toy gun or even as simple as praying at school, after all the school shootings that have happened don't you think using a little caution is called for ? kid's his age and younger have killed grown men, the school and the people who spotted this "home made clock" should be praised for looking out for the safety of the other students and faculty...wouldn't you think ?Kat said:Oh he was violated all right. He was forced to do a perp walk in front of the other students to the patrol car. At 14 that's EVERYTHING. For a freaking clock. I've heard on the news that he won't be going back to that school...looking for a new one. I hope they'll be able to find one with intelligent people teaching and administering.

I missed this post....how in the hell would you know that. I may have been 18 but I was speaking from the point of the view of the trauma I felt at the time was probably similar to what Ahmed may have felt when he was arrested. You have to remember I was never in any trouble with the law or ever done anything unlawful up to that time. So yes being in cuffs, a squad car, placed in a cell on a bench, one arm cuffed as a drunk sits on the other end. Things like that caused me trauma/nervousness at that time especially Whenever I came around officers at that age.Last-12-Exit said:
What happened to you was completely different than what happened this kid.g under p said:
It's not a big deal because he's going to get lots of *poonaanee*......well I have to TOTALLY DISAGREE! One thing you have to remember from the teen's point of view was that he was building creating something INNOCENTLY to impress his teacher and for reasons unknown to him initially he's arrested and placed in handcuffs. I don't care what you say THAT trauma at THAT age is going to stay with him for the rest of his life. What happened to me has never ever left me and I was 18 at the time, no matter how much I tried to forget it still stays with and what SOME officers can do when and if they feel like it.Last-12-Exit said:Seriously? The trauma? It's not that big of a deal. The kid is going to get laid as a result of this. He's already been invited to the white house. This kid is the most popular kid in the school district. Too bad he's suspended.
Peace
I'm sure Ahmed's trauma maybe worse than what I felt, he just started school there, now appears to have to move unto another school. Trauma is trauma if one has never been in that situation of being arrested for something that is unknown to them at the time it WILL cause said trauma in either case.

I agree that it wasn't handled properly. But I agree with GF that it had to be reported considering the number of school shootings and random acts of violence that has dominated news recently. As I've said before, he will not be the last innocent person to be handcuffed. I thought ones formative years were ages 3-7. A kids brain is a sponge during those years. Not necessarily at 14. I could be completely wrong about that.Kat said:GF it was how it was handled. I once taught preschool years ago....grant you my kids weren't going to build a clock and bring it to school. However, I also had a before and after school program with teens Ahmed's age....IF one of them brought the same device to class and IF I could not determine what the device was (mind you this was 25 years ago).....YES I'm going to get someone in authority who could determine what it was.Godfather. said:

It's what happened after the authorities were called things apparently went down hill. Ahmed apparently was STILL suspended and now is apparently looking for a new school. Let's say he did return to his new high school it's not clear how he would be greeted happily and with open arms. I don't know if you read what happened to Kiera Wilmot from my link who is black did not appear to have a happy return to her school at 16 in 2013. She did have some good advice for Ahmed though....basically don't let the incident dominate his future and move on.

Yeah I'd be concerned too RR but once they determined not a bomb give it back. Little talk on why it could scare and I call his parents.rr165892 said:^^^^^^^^^^^ After some investigative reporting I found the menacing looking clock Ahmed built.Easy to see the problem here. Its quite apparent.

Come on think about how yiu felt in school at that age. Maybe you were a bad ass. Hell being cuffed as an adult is traumatic. Have you been cuffed? Then he's surrounded by big cops. You have to recognize how bad this could be. Heck look at his facial expressions.Last-12-Exit said:

I used the word "trauma". OK, maybe a bit of hyperbolic vocab. But not by much. If I'd been cuffed at that kids age I would have found it a serious mind fuck..Last-12-Exit said:

He's 14. He's got an inventors mind. He makes something and gets punished for it, in a severe and public spectacle. Yes, I've been handcuffed. First at age 17. I was falsely accused of having a bag of weed. I was cuffed, taken to the police station, and questioned until 2am until my sister came and got me. It was more of an annoyance than traumatizing.
Sure, it could have turned out much differently if I was a black kid or even Hispanic. But I am not. There was no verbal or physical abuse. I did not feel my rights were violated. I chalked it up to being in the wrong place at the wrong time and choosing to hang out with the wrong people. It taught me a lesson.0 -

Like I said earlier you may not think anything that happened to Ahmed caused him any trauma based on possibly what happened to you in your incident at 17. However, please don't speak me I felt devastated as to what happened to me that cops could act that way when I didn't do a damn thing. I don't know maybe you were more of a bad ass than I at that age and incidents such as those had no effect on you. Good for you.Last-12-Exit said:Yes, I've been handcuffed. First at age 17. Exactly, it's completely different. I'd say growing up as a Muslim in Texas can be challenging at the best of times. Being treated like this is something he'll never forget and I honestly don't believe a white kid would have received the same treatment. Therein the main problem lies. Even though I think it's nuts to call the police to investigate a suspicious clock, I'd actually be slightly less concerned if I thought they'd react the same way regardless of what student was involved. Only slightly less though, it's still insanitycallen said:Change situation to 14 and in school. Being Muslim among all these republican raised kids.
