Yes, I've been handcuffed. First at age 17. I was falsely accused of having a bag of weed. I was cuffed, taken to the police station, and questioned until 2am until my sister came and got me. It was more of an annoyance than traumatizing.

Sure, it could have turned out much differently if I was a black kid or even Hispanic. But I am not. There was no verbal or physical abuse. I did not feel my rights were violated. I chalked it up to being in the wrong place at the wrong time and choosing to hang out with the wrong people. It taught me a lesson.

Like I said earlier you may not think anything that happened to Ahmed caused him any trauma based on possibly what happened to you in your incident at 17. However, please don't speak me I felt devastated as to what happened to me that cops could act that way when I didn't do a damn thing. I don't know maybe you were more of a bad ass than I at that age and incidents such as those had no effect on you. Good for you.

    Peace

I did not speak for you.
    You spoke to me

    Peace

Did I miss something here? Did I offend you?
Nope, we appear to simply have a disagreement on the subject matter at hand.

People need to step back and look at the big picture.
Once you have a suspicion of a bomb you don't get "someone else" to check that is not qualified(science teacher)
Bomb squads check for you - no one else can make the determination otherwise once a suspicious device is at the attention.
The only mistake done here is not calling the bomb squad and immediately evacuating.
No ones rights were violated whatsoever.
"Uh, excuse me Mr. Science teacher I feel like this may be a bomb. Can you check it for me"?
Any normal person would say fuck you check it yourself. - or call the police, whatever suits your fancy.
The situation was cleared up, no one was hurt. Now the kid is making international friends at a ferocious pace. Sounds like the poor little offended muslim is doing allright. Good for him.
The suspension should still stand. Rules are rules at school. We all know that. When we are away we trust others with our kids at school.
This outrage is ridiculous, get over it.

It appears Ahmed IS A bright kid and is taking the advise of other wise students such as Kiera Wilmot who went through something similar. He seems to be not letting this incident get the best of him and is moving on to another school for possibly a fresh start to his high school studies.

I think the adults broke the rule if that's the case.

Yes it turned out the adults were wrong on what it was.
They certainly were not wrong for their actions.
I don't know the plethora of rules that particular school has but I am sure that a person as intelligent as this kid is should have known this would cause a stir bringing that to school.

Scott, seriously, sometimes you post dumb things. I'd love for your son to be held for 4 hrs without you being allowed to see him or know what the fuck is going on. And if you wouldn't freak out then sorry, you need to figure out some parenting skills. I don't think there'd be any parent in here who wouldn't freak the fuck out if that happened to their kid. Seriously man

this would not have happened to a white kid. know why? because a white family would run to a lawyer and sue the shit out of the school district, the superintendent, the board of education, etc for not notifying the parents.

a lot of parents wouldn't care that he was arrested. until it was their kid.

Oh he was violated all right. He was forced to do a perp walk in front of the other students to the patrol car. At 14 that's EVERYTHING. For a freaking clock. I've heard on the news that he won't be going back to that school...looking for a new one. I hope they'll be able to find one with intelligent people teaching and administering.
    grrrrrr.

I know you don't post much or like to respond to posts but what is the difference between a kid being suspended or expelled for bringing a toy gun or even as simple as praying at school, after all the school shootings that have happened don't you think using a little caution is called for ? kid's his age and younger have killed grown men, the school and the people who spotted this "home made clock" should be praised for looking out for the safety of the other students and faculty...wouldn't you think ?

    Godfather.

point me to a story of a kid getting expelled from school for praying. just praying, not shooting someone and then praying over the body.

I have never heard of a kid being hauled off by the police for 4 hours of interrogation for having a toy gun at school - usually teachers would just look at the thing and figure about what it really is, which the teachers apparently failed to do in this case of the clock - and a gun replica of an actual weapon. How do you not see the difference between a gun and clock anyway?
no, but police shoot kids with toy guns.

    Just an anecdote:
I'm white. My parents are are white. When I was 12 my class was held by the teacher for detention without notice. It was only an hour, but no parents were informed. My dad was picking me up to take me to a doctor appointment. When I finally came out he was furious. He didn't believe me so he went inside to corroborate my story. He didn't believe the teacher would be allowed to detain a class for an hour without notice. When he was informed what happened by the school staff, he caught the (white male) teacher in the office, got in his face, and threatened him with physical bodily harm. In full view of the principle a couple students and a dozen staff. No police were called. I was suspended for a week.

no, it is the inside of a 1968 marshall plexi. something mike mccready has owned at one time or another. i would hate to think that jim marshall would have invented this in 2015, taken it to school to show his teacher, and been arrested because some moron thought it looked like a bomb.

    Debatable.

Obviously, one has to exercise a degree of common sense when in public places; however, sometimes mistakes are made. When they are... we teach the mistake and move on.

This event was mismanaged and as a result it has been blown way out of proportion.

Fak. What's brutal is that there'll never be an end to shit like this. It's ridiculous story after ridiculous story that baffles the mind.

I was 18 and had to wait in a jail cell for a couple hours for an incident to this day I don't know what i was arrested for or charged with. Years later when I had the nerve to tell my mother she told me she would have given them a piece of her mind. I would've had to calm her down to lessen any further trouble.

If this was my teenager I probably would not have been too graceful under that kind of pressure.

  • People need to step back and look at the big picture.

Has it escaped you this entire time that there was never any bomb identification/disposal trained personnel that inspected the device? So somehow they were able to determine this wasn't a bomb without the bomb squad, but calling the teacher who had already seen the device and spoke to Ahmed about it would have been way out of line? What double standard universe are you living in?

I hope this kid gets the BEST civil rights lawyer or top dog out there and sues the shit out of the town, police department and state. These idiots won't learn until it starts costing the town and state money. Fuck these bigot assholes.

And I just saw the chief of police on Chris Hayes actually say that when they held Ahmad in interrogation, Ahmad didn't have the right to his parents or lawyer being there. There is NO WAY that that can possible be legal. Diesnt everyone have the right to remain silent and talk to a lawyer. Tell me I'm not wrong. Is this real? No fucken way that that's the law.

You're missing the whole fucken point. You a father? Would you be angry if this happened to your kid? 4 fucken hours without you or a lawyer present? Who knows what the fuck they were trying to frame this kid. Think about it. How long before they realized it wasn't a bomb? I'll give them the benefit and say 20 mins. Now knowing how dumb they're gonna look when this is gonna come out, let's see if this kid can at least give us something we can use as an excuse. 4 fucken hrs without parents or lawyer after they realized it wasn't a bomb. Why? Think about.
