The threat of intelligent Muslim kids!

Just read this story and could only shake my head in disbelief. The poor kid should have been praised and encouraged for his enthusiasm and initiative, instead he gets embarrassed and treated like a terrorist. That teacher should be bloody ashamed of herself, a real inspiration to her students I don't think!

I don't find this surprising. 6 year old kids are getting suspended for pointing their finger like a gun these days. Anything that even resembles a threat is going to get you in trouble these days.
  • A sad and ridiculous story all around. Unless there is much more to the story to suggest that this kid might have the potential to be bringing in bombs, the teacher acted without any common sense, and the police were even worse to proceed with arresting and removing him.

And who took the photo of him in the school with handcuffs on and "gave" (sold) it to the media?? Shouldn't he have at least had some privacy rights as a minor? Presumably it would have either been a school employee or a police officer - both repellent in my view.

Agreed, often. The expression on his face spoke volumes.

    Poor kid. AND suspended?

And these are some of the geniuses "educating" children. Makes me appreciate the good, thoughtful and caring ones even more.
  • This story is sticking in my mind this morning.

Seems to me the more you treat people as the enemy, the more likely they are to become your enemy.

The man they call my enemy, I've seen his eyes - he looks just like me.

One of the better lines in my opinion.

Horrible story all the way around. Makes me embarrassed.

Why didn't the engineering teacher have the kids back? Some of these Schools and there over hyped "safety" concerns are a joke now a days.
Good news is with the attention ,I bet this kid ends up with some opportunities he may have never had.

These stories always piss me off. There are few things more frustrating than seeing educators act like such fucking small-minded IDIOTS. It's really depressing.

  • This whole thing is disgusting. I can't believe the level of ignorance that leads to actions like this. All I have to say to the "adults" involved is when you ask your self how someone can become a "terrorist" take a moment to reflect. People often react to their circumstances and humiliation like this runs deep. WHAT YOU FEAR, YOU CREATE.

What a way to crush an inspired teen to build something such as an electronic clock. This was his first few weeks of high school and ALL he wanted to was to impress his new teacher in a new school. He was part of a robotic club in middle school and wanted to start the same in the beginning of his HS studies.

I'm pretty sure if Johnny with blue eyes brought the same thing to impress his teacher hardly any of this would have been an issue. *oh Johnny, this is amazing....its awesome*. I'm sure it would be put on display as to to things one can build if you put your mind to it.

Shortly after the press conference, President Barack Obama extended a Twitter invitation for Ahmed to bring his “cool clock” to the White House. “We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It's what makes America great,” the tweet read.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg also joined the social media chorus, extending an open invitation to visit and exhorting Ahmed to “keep building.”

“Having the skill and ambition to build something cool should lead to applause, not arrest,” Zuckerberg wrote. “The future belongs to people like Ahmed.

Police say he could be charge for bringing a hoax bomb to school. Huh, he never threatened anyone with it or called it a bomb yet got suspended and could be charged....ridiculous. Only in America, but then again this could probAbly happen anywhere in the world if you appear to be Middle Eastern and Muslim.

Sarcasm aside, that is really awesome!
With the attention this is getting, and with support from.... the entire world, really. Including the POTUS, I think the police will back down, lol. That it happened in the first place is revolting. That everyone is talking about how disgusting it was is very good. Ahmed has definitely been validated and vindicated IMO. The people who got this going should be fired.

    Aww, great photo.

GF, there's so much fuckedupness in how this was viewed, not to mention mishandled, from start to (almost) finish.

    The kid is alright.

Alright, I agree in general that this is a terrible story and handled very poorly by many adults who need to handle these situations better. That said, as the MTA says, "see something, say something". Putting aside the fact that this kid is muslim, what if this thing were part of a bomb and teachers took his word that it was a clock and something terrible happened. I don't know the exact school situation there, but from what I understand he was a freshman. School started 2 weeks ago for much of the country, so assuming this kids middle school and high school were separate, his teachers knew him for a whole 2 weeks. I don't think the teachers were necessarily wrong for being concerned and bringing it to the attention of authorities. How it handled after that was terrible.

I truly hope this doesn't stymie this kids love for science and building/inventing things and I think it's great that he has received a ton of support.

So I gather some people think the reaction would have been much different if, with everything else being equal, the kid had been white? ..... I think that's an unfounded assumption in this case (unless I missed something important, like the school said that a Muslim/brown kid should know better, or something along those lines).

They led Ahmed into a room where four other police officers waited. He said an officer he’d never seen before leaned back in his chair and remarked: “Yup. That’s who I thought it was.”

Like I said, I think it was handled after it was passed along to the authorities, especially with him being interrogated for 4 hours without being able to call his parents, but I have no problem with the teachers passing it along to the authorities.
  • I think it is a sign of the times and the parents should have at least had the foresight that this could happen by bringing something that looks like this to school.

If he brought this through to airport screening what would've happened?
What would've happened if brought this to any security or screening lines?
I'm sure everyone here would be saying "What the fuck was this kid thinking"?, instead
    Safety is paramount in schools.
