There will be speeches but they mostly take place during the set breaks in between artists. I think the bigger concern is probably "special guests" -- artists not on the bill who are willing to show up for a song or two. John Legend did this in 2012 and it cut into Band of Horses set and left Neil Young with only 70 minutes at the end. A repeat of that is something we don't want.

There seems to always be one, at least the first two years (anyone go last year? was there a one song special guest?)

2013 was Janelle Monae. Also Elvis Costello was listed close to day-of-show and did two songs.

It was Sting. The single songs are usually really good. I assume there will be one again this year and I personally look forward to it. The time it takes is about the same as if someone came up and does a speech anyway . It's part of their program so I don't know how it cuts a bands set time.

find it amazing that people are willing to pay $250+ for a 60 minute pearl jam set when the concert is pretty much FREE outside of the vip.

If you were aware of the logistics you wouldn't be. Plus it will be more than 60 minutes. I'm amazed by how many people are trying to make themselves feel better about not going by downplaying the whole thing.
