That's something that can't be ignored as a factor. I tried discussing this with a friend who is very much someone I'd expect to be supporting Bernie but who isn't. The reason he gives me is that even if Bernie got elected he'd be ineffective since he wouldn't be able to get anything passed since no one likes him on either side. IMO those two factors (his age and his potential ineffectiveness) are the only two things I have issue with. But they're kind of important. Because of his age the VP is going to be super important, moreso than san Clinton's VP would be. Also if for some reason (i dont know that it's even remotely likely) we wind up with Bernie as pres and Clinton as VP - I'm not really liking that scenario.
Personally I don't know if I agree with his potential ineffectiveness once he's actually elected. Right now, yea I understand that no one likes him. But if he became President I feel like he'd probably pull a few dems further left and at least get some stuff done.

Somewhere I read someone (Gore Vidal?) said, "No one gets to the office of Presidency without having been bought off ten times over." So we know no candidate is perfect. If age is Bernie's biggest liability I'll chance it because everything else I know about him adds up to a better choice than any of the other 21 possibilities. I want a predident with experience and wisdom, not athletic ability.

As for getting things passed, that why we have a congress. I don't want any one person taking on that responsibility. I've always said committees make better legislation that most individuals.

But that's the problem isn't it¿ If no one in congress likes him they will not pass any of the stuff he supports.

Well then he won't make it to a second term if that happens. But look at it this way, we survived 8 years of W. Surely we can at least tolerate 4 years of a man who is sensible and makes sense.

Dude I'm totally for Bernie for pres. That's why I'm asking all these questions here. Even if he does just one term at the very least he might bring some issues to light with the American public who didn't notice those things before. I just don't wanna get my hopes up.

My problem is I have no faith in the process. I don't necessarily believe that it matters how many people vote for Bernie. And I see Jeb as a huge threat cuz I don't think his brother actually won the votes for his second term. I am concerned that Jeb's presidency has already been bought and paid for.

OMG, another thing I just read was Gore Vidal's account of the hijacking of the presidency by Bush. It's super well written and both painfully funny and frustrating. Yeah, I hear you- it's very difficult to have any faith in the process. So often it feels like I'm voting simply because I can but with few expectations. That's why my recent experience with working at the state level to help get the End of Life Option Act bill passed in CA has been rewarding- even if it doesn't pass (although it looks very good that it will) it feels much more like you can actually make a difference. Same thing and even more when you scale down to the county and city level.

If Sanders was getting blocked purposely due to partisan divide... I can see him taking the gloves off and bringing some politicians down a peg or two.

I don't see him choosing his words very carefully or feeling the need to 'play the game' for future aspirations or $. The man has ideals and loves the country/democracy. If you listen to him talk, he is very good at getting his point across.

The issue with his age isn't really his physical abilities though, it's really his mental strength isn't it? We all know that your mind starts to go as you get older, even if it's just short term memory, that could be a pretty big deal for the President of the USA. The next issue (and I'm sorry to be so insensitive about this age issue, but I'm speaking about the ROLE of President not specifically dehumanizing Bernie here) is what happens if he dies while in office. Obviously it's a risk for every president but by the age of 75 Bernie has an increased risk of passing from natural causes. Look don't get me wrong the man is almost definitely healthier than me. But electing a president of an advanced age means we have to be even more careful and pay more attention to who gets the VP spot since there's an increased likelihood that they will actually step into the Pres role.

I agree on that for sure.

But I would expect Sanders to take that decision very seriously.

edit: I sent in my registration as a Dem last week so I can vote in the primary in April. Hate that I had to do that.

My dad is 74, and he went for a 20 km run yesterday, and didn't even start breathing heavily until the 10th km. He is also sharp as a tack - same as ever, as a retired school principal. 75 isn't necessarily very old these days. That said, I don't know anything about Bernie's current health.

My parents just called and asked if I would look up on my computer thingie if Bernie Sanders was Jewish. I told them I didn't need to look it up on my computer thingie, that I was pretty sure he was but most likely he's an atheist. I told them most people with common sense are. They hung up on me. Lol!

I think I'll call my mom back and let her know how much I'm enjoying the new pope. :)

I was in the grocery store this morning and in Star Bucks corner overheard some older guys kind of bath mouthing Bernie Sanders. At first I was a bit miffed but then thought, oh well, at least they are aware he's out there. On the way out I gave them a "Go Bernie!"

Brian,I've decided that on top of my other objections,a big problem I think will manifest itself with a Sanders presidency would be a huge increase in the number of slow driving Toyota priusus on the road.We cannot possibly allow for such a clog on our nations free flowing highways. Most will be bronze or tan of course.Dont let this happen.

LOL!! I'm totally cracking up because, rr, it is quite apparent you have not driven a Prius before! Not, mind you, that I am a regular speeder but when the need is there, my standard basic Prius has lot of zip- even more off the line or in a tight spot than my old 8 cylinder gas-hog Malibu ever did!

Oh, and mine is blue. I know, I should have gotten the one with green flames.
