Protest planned here today for a shooting on Hollywood Boulevard last night, at a very busy and popular intersection. Based on the bit I've seen, police shot a man who had what looked like a smallish knife. Kind of surprised that given the weapon and with so many people around, another means could've been utilized to subdue him.
Musky Dan, how long was your training to become an officer, if you don't mind me asking? And did they offer any training in human relations and how to communicate with the people you're training to protect? Since you work directly with the public and all, I think it would make sense.
Also, in using the Liberal label against American Culture as a whole as you did, says everything about you and how you view, again, the people you're trained to protect. If you believe helping others may be a socialist idea, you're in the wrong industry... Or rather, as of today, the right industry... Because the police are suddenly showing us who they really are and not who they are supposed to be.

Alright Backseat, finally got a few to answer your question. So We spend about 6 months in the academy. We take all sorts of classes w/ community /human relations being one of them. The only thing that I personally gained from being in the Academy was learning Law, self Defence, and verbal judo. After you graduate the academy you are considered a probationary officer(PPO) for a year. When you are a PPO you are considered a at will employee which means the city can fire you for any reason, no Union Protection. As a Ppo you have 2 work the streets w/ a full status officer at all times, it's how you really learn " the job". We try to protect the ppo's as much as we can, but they step on their dicks often and it's hard to get them out of a jam.
When you have seen the Devils work day in day out for years it changes you. We can discuss who the devil in the urban community really is forever, but I have always formed my opinions from what I see w/ my own eyes. Personal responsibility and lack of self control are the biggest issues I see in the ghetto. Believe it or not I am a very compassionate officer on the street and understand many in the ghetto community have been delt and very tough hand. The children are the ones that always get to me since I have seen countless of them mutilated for senseless stuff. I have taken on 12 little brothers over my carrer and 9 of them are still alive, 4 of them are locked up currently( one for killing and police officer, and another for killing his little 8 year old brother with a steak knife) . 4 them I try to keep in touch with, but they only reach out when they get locked up or need dough. So that leaves me with Deshawn. He is 17, a gangster disiple and only been locked up twice for shoplifting and delivery of heroin. He is still in school and wants to be a gym shoe designer...kids got over 100 Jordan's. I took him to northern Wisconsin Musky Fishin last summer which blew his world. Kid smokes dope everyday still but is starting to get curious about the non ghetto world . I sure hope he is serious about that cause he is about to be a man and will have to make some life decisions soon before the gangsta lifestyle swallows him whole. Little punk hates Pearl Jam but likes Juana's Addiction, so there is a bit of hope for him yet. My partner who grew up on the same block as him thinks he is doomed, but I believe in the kid. I just think he is jeolous cause all of his little brothers are dead or locked up and he can't believe Deshawn isn't either one of those since he grew up with his Daddy who was killed by the police 5 years ago After a car chase after he raped and killed Deshawns mother. Some pretty fucked up stuff....anyhow, That's all I got for now, time to head back to the blind.
Sorry Gern but paycheck, embrace and liberals should not be used in the same sentence unless of course we are talking about how to make them (pay checks)smaller.
You are delusional. Which party has been pushing "right to work" legislation?
Which party is pushing for an increase in the minimum wage? Wake up
Delusional Gern I don't think so.I get both sides here.I am an employer. One who has had full insurance and health benefits,401 k and other very generous perks for my employees way before the govt told me I needed to.Even the lowest paid employee I have makes more then double minimum wage.Again I didn't need to be prompted by govt. Has everyone of my people brought home less on their checks under this admin then last yes! Have I paid way more in taxes you bet.Im stroking all those checks every week,I see first hand how much less my employees being home. I don't care which party is ruling. It is just important that we pave the way for Sucess for all buisness owners and self employed folks. That way we can hire more people and the cycle continues.(sound familiar?)
would it be fair to say that in part this is because costs have gone up not directly related to government? Such as supplies, transport, etc?
Actually the repealing of the Bush tax credit was the first big change my people felt on their pay checks. All other increased costs is passed along to our clients. But there is also a lot of local and state nonsense that impacts my buisness that creates an environment that is more BS and costly then helpful(over regulation and fees)

oh...and by "under this administration" do you mean your leadership? What the hell does Obama have to do with your business. My revenues went up about 15% last year. Was that thanks to Obama? or me?
Don't get me wrong Me is always the answer. Our revenue is way up as well.I personally have enjoyed the last 8 years financially all because of Our hard work and sweat equity. But in fairness without my offset, some of my employees would all be out of pocket more now then prior to 08.im sure every situation is different. As I've stated in other threads,I am an Independent so To me I judge each administration on how it effects me/us.I just would like to see more common sense legislation to keep the road to buisness and financial success easier to obtain.

There was no repeal. The credit expired as it was meant to. When it was written into law it had a set life.
So you blame Bush for signing that now? Or since it expired under Obama it's his fault? See how that doesn't make sense?

musky, thanks for the insight into you, and what you do. Both your candor and work are appreciated.
Once in awhile I watch that show, "Beyond Scared Straight". Some of the officers go beyond what they have to - in a good way - taking some kids under their wing, helping to mentor them, showing them they have options and are capable of pursuing them.
Musky,If you can change even one of the young lives you are interacting with and put them on a path to self enrichment and get them out of the self destructive environment they are in now, then you sir have a lot to be proud of.Keep it up. Side note- When my daughter was in High School she wanted to be a Fed.So she joined our local PD explorers program where she learned a lot about self defense, gun safety(she is a hell of a shot wa 9mm)community outreach, self discipline,Certain tactical stuff, etc.I bring this up because many of her class mates where not from a good home in a comfy white suburb like she was,But were kids who needed the guidance and attention that the great officers who worked with them gave to them year in and year out.I personally saw kids on a destructive path do a full 180 and go in the right direction because of the outreach of those officers who did nothing but care. Some of those kids have went on to give back as local officers(in training) and College educated members of our community when a few years ago jail or death were the most likely outcomes. So Kudos to those that do fight the good fight.
And so it comes out that Musky is not only on the front lines doing horrible work... he cares a bit more than what the typical 'disgrace' does.
Good for you, Musky. Again, I feel that if I was exposed to the horrors you have been... I'd likely become angry and jaded. It's obvious that there is a side to you that has developed a such- and we have read it here- but it's nice that you balance it with the 'extra' efforts to remain grounded. These 'extra' efforts must be so rewarding!
No matter how righteous some feel about themselves here... I feel you are doing much more to actually help with the problems than anyone else on these pages. We talk the talk... you walk the walk.

Thanks for answering. Much appreciated. In response to your first paragraph, I'm wondering why you didn't get much out of human relations training. Because from your other responses, it seems you are pretty angry with those you protect. I notice you change your tone with this current response, so I wonder if you can try to keep human relations in mind when dealing with your job. Perhaps not assuming the public is at odds with you is the first step, communicating in a way that works rather than angers also seems vital. And just a question, why would you try and protect PPOs? It's their training, and yes, a little leeway would be helpful, but it is a part of the job. If they can't handle it, they can't handle it. Some are not cut out for the tough streets of being a street officer so why pretend they are? KWIM?
Your second paragraph is touching, and really shows a different, caring side. It reminds me of a friend who had a job in the Adirondack mountains taking juveniles with records in NYC and bringing them out in the woods camping. Hoods in the Woods is what the program was nicknamed. It was huge in bringing out a different side to these kids only knowing the streets in the city, opened them up to a different life, and helped rehabilitate them.
This one is just tragic.Id call this one a accidental death,a tragedy.I really didn't see excessive force. No guns, tazers, pepper spray.Just Cops trying to arrest a big dude who was not making it easy. This wasn't murder by a long shot.Horrible and tragic and unnecessary yes but I watch the video a few times and I don't see a bunch of gung-ho storm troopers.Just typical police work that had a bad accident.
What amount of force is necessary for a man selling loose cigarettes? To me it seems to be NONE. Typical police work, I agree, that's exactly the problem. Escalate what should be a citation and a goodbye into a show of force which carries the risk of tragedy for civilian and officer alike.
Not the act .The amount of force is relative to his size and non compliance and his perceived escalating hostile demeanor. It sucks and any death is horrible but they could not just sit back and do nothing. I do agree it is not a good outcome and senseless waste of life.
I disagree, sit back and do nothing is exactly what they could have done. This man posed no threat, real or potential, to anybody and they could/should have written him a citation and a summons and went about their day or ignored him entirely. Instead, they chose a display of force so they could show him how tough they are. Meanwhile, how often does a cop or firefighter get a traffic citation? They can turn a blind eye to that but they have to be out there policing the looseys. Broken window policing is racially disparate, just like stop and frisk, and both are bad policy because they lead to unnecessary confrontations with the risk of violence or death. Should every pot smoker be arrested? Should we start arresting people for speeding and failure to stop at stop signs? Should we arrest people for jaywalking? Where does it end?
This man was arrested, what 30 times? Over untaxed cigarettes. Mitt Romney doesn't get arrested for millions in tax evasion. Billions in fraud and tax evasion in the financial collapse, nobody arrested. But these cops couldn't sit back and do nothing? Bullshit!
Damit!! I got coffee and donut stains all over me again...That's the second shirt I ruined from laughing so hard at a post. This blinders on policing is starting to sound better and better and safer for everyone apparently... Interesting concept. Thanks for the tip.
Y'know... I'm getting a little bit tired of you telling every single person here who disagrees with you and backs up their opinion with case studies or statistics that we're deluded, don't understand the hardships of your job, or are taking the popular opinion. Or just making a complete mockery of everything we say.
My theory? You, and many police officers at this point in time, are having trouble coping with the fact that you might now be discriminated against because of a demographic you belong to. How ironic.
It's always been that way Pal, atleast in my town. I will never forget what my Feild training officer said 2 me on my first day.....kid, congratulations ..you are now closer to going 2 jail than you ever have been in your life putting on that uniform, just don't get yourself killed. I thought he was an old crusty veteran that was out of touch and didn't care anymore, but boy I was wrong. Liberal Society is going to get the kind of Policing that they are demanding and that is quite fine with me and everyone I work with. Taking reports and waiting for backup w/ in progress calls is a lot safer for us and apparently citizens. The Police will take the blame as we always do when homicides and shootings skyrocket in urban areas And all the community activist/revruns will be up in arms again for the Police not being aggressive enough dealing with the thug- life element. The song remains the same....been through this countless of times in my town.
This right here is the crux of the problem we have. Some police don't consider themselves part of the community they are policing. It's us vs. them, we are the enemy, and that's very problematic and scary.
Thanks for making that abundantly clear Musky.
It was my pleasure sir. And you are absolutey right, I don't consider myself part of the urban community I am forced to work in.. I am one who respects having a job, being respectful to my woman by marrying her and not having 10 kids with 7 different lady friends, staying off crack and heroin, not selling my food stamps meant for my 10 kids for 50dy cents on the $ to buy booze and cigarettes, essentially living a pathetic existence all paid for by you and me. Now you might ask, why don't you get the hell out of there??? Well just like all civil servant jobs it's all about senority. In my town you need atleat 20 years on to bid to one of "those" kinds communities . I gots a few more years 2 go. Be safe and keep on rockin in the free world !!
I worked in what was perceived as the worst neighborhood in Houston. Drugs, crime and all but two employees was black. Those two were Hispanic. I was the manager. Worked this store for over a year and the one thing that stood out was how many good people were in the neighborhood. I treated all with respect and they did the same for me. Will always have find memories and perspective of becoming minority.
You are bad human to be a cop and I hope your just blowing smoke about being one. Be pissed off as well if I was black and had officer like you to contend with.
I respect police , thank them every opportunity I can but you need to find an alternative means for support. Course not sure we're racists are supposed to work.

Just a moment are you saying you are a current police officer and part of your views are of what you stated here? If that's the case then no wonder people are up in arms on how police go about doing there very dangerous job.
Your stated views are very very disturbing with all due respects. Wow!
Peace
Doubt he's police officer. Or a really dumb one to post this dribble that could get him fired.
Manney shot Hamilton 14 times on April 30 during an incident that began when workers at the nearby Starbucks called police to complain about him sleeping in the downtown park. A pair of officers checked on Hamilton twice and found he was doing nothing wrong, according to a Milwaukee police internal affairs investigation.
Does the Dontrel Hamilton case suggest that's it's the luck of the draw on what cops respond and outcome? Other officers responded investigated and left without incident then manney shows up and 14 shots later, another dead black dude.
“After reviewing all the evidence, I believe there can be little serious doubt that P.O. Manney was justified in firing at Dontre Hamilton, who was attacking him with a deadly weapon (baton). The more difficult issue is whether P.O. Manney fired more shots than necessary, or continued firing after he could reasonably perceive that Hamilton was clearly no longer a threat.
“It does not appear to me, based on all the evidence I have reviewed, that P.O. Manney continued firing after the point in time when a hypothetical “reasonable officer at the scene” under the totality of the circumstances existing in this case, would have stopped firing. The use of deadly force against Dontre Hamilton was not a choice P.O. Manney made voluntarily, but was instead a defensive action forced upon him by Dontre Hamilton’s deadly attack with a police baton.”
DA just explained: "You do not have right to resist even if officer is completely wrong."
9 witnesses in the DA's report said Off. Manney shot Dontre Hamilton 1-2 times after he had fallen to the ground. Manney told the DA that Hamilton hit him in with his baton on the neck. Zero witnesses said they seen this.

Hope you have a good Saturday.
Side note-
When my daughter was in High School she wanted to be a Fed.So she joined our local PD explorers program where she learned a lot about self defense, gun safety(she is a hell of a shot wa 9mm)community outreach, self discipline,Certain tactical stuff, etc.I bring this up because many of her class mates where not from a good home in a comfy white suburb like she was,But were kids who needed the guidance and attention that the great officers who worked with them gave to them year in and year out.I personally saw kids on a destructive path do a full 180 and go in the right direction because of the outreach of those officers who did nothing but care. Some of those kids have went on to give back as local officers(in training) and College educated members of our community when a few years ago jail or death were the most likely outcomes. So Kudos to those that do fight the good fight.
You are bad human to be a cop and I hope your just blowing smoke about being one. Be pissed off as well if I was black and had officer like you to contend with.
I respect police , thank them every opportunity I can but you need to find an alternative means for support. Course not sure we're racists are supposed to work.
Other officers responded investigated and left without incident then manney shows up and 14 shots later, another dead black dude.
