Ouch. What did you do to get that wonderful surgery?

I had a questionably cancerous tumor growing on the major tendon in my thumb.
Good news: not cancer, and I did not lose full use of my thumb
Bad News: I lost some of the feeling and use in my thumb

I'm generally right handed, but can use my left when needed.

^^ That is great news! If this is a recent injury, you might pull around and be okay. I cut halfway through the tendon in my left thumb, had to have it stitched back together and had hitchhiker thumb for 2 months. It was numb for probably a year and a half. It's good now, but if I bang it on something in just the right spot (did that about a week ago) the intense pain can bring me to my knees. You might be able to do some home therapy for the usefulness portion.

    But hey, hooray-- no cancer!

^^^ I did do PT after surgery, still don't have all my grip strength back but I can manage. And I have that stabbing pain if something hits it 'just right'.

What did you do to your thumb? (if you don't mind sharing)

I don't mind. I was out on a buying trip for work. I had been gone for a week, I was exhausted, but I got back early enough to go to my stained glass class. Cutting glass while tired is not a good thing. I snapped the glass up and into my thumb as opposed to away from myself. I think I ended up with 14 stitches total. (Some inside, some outside.) It instantly went numb. It isn't as strong as it was. There is definite atrophy when you compare the two hands. (I'm right handed and the injury was to my left.)

A handful of years prior to that, I burned the hell out of the same hand/thumb in glassblowing. I was assisting a classmate, she flashed the pipe in further than you typically do, didn't tell me and I grabbed hold at the typical hand holds. I heard my skin sizzle. (The glory hole she flashed it in was running at 2200 F.) I let go of the pipe and watched in slow motion as it was dropping to the floor. She screamed. I grabbed back hold before it hit the floor and helped her to finish the piece. The prof watched the whole thing. After we were done, she looked at my hand and insisted that she take me for medical care, but I declined. I thought I was fine. I did go later in class. I ended up in a burn mitt for a week, having to go back daily to have the dressing changed. It hurt like hell. I don't think that injury helped my glass cutting injury.

Thanks rr...I originally scheduled the surgery with a regular doctor, but they kept screwing up my surgery date, so I told them to f-off. Went to a hand surgeon who was very excited to do the surgery, even his nurse said he loves the really technical surgeries like mine was.
A bit of the lumpiness on the left side (closer to the tip) is there, but you have to really look for the scar. I get little phantom feelings in it...like it feels like it itches, but when I scratch, I don't feel anything.

I've twisted both ankles something awful a few times...latest one I posted on fb...I'll post it here next time I log on there.

I would love to learn glassblowing, but what happened to deaden would probably happen to me.

^^ The glassblowing incident wasn't even my fault! It was unfortunately someone in the studio that only cared about the piece that they were making and didn't take into account communicating with the person who was helping them. We had to work in teams and though she wasn't my favorite person to work with, you do what you have to do.

It took 4 years for me to get into glassblowing at Kent. There weren't many slots. I did it for 2 1/2 years. I also did glass casting and I can bend neon. (Bending neon would be a lot more difficult for me to get back into than glassblowing.) Experience I wouldn't trade for anything in the world.

I've been saying the exact same thing for years. I sprained my ankle in 2008 by falling down a short flight of stairs. In 2012 I learned I have a hole in my tendon as a result of that injury or fall or whatever. In 2015 I learned I have sciatica and two disrupted disks in my back because apparently that injury made me walk wrong or something. Yea. I mean. I don't even know what to do at this point. My PT eval is Tuesday. I don't really know if they're only doing it for my back or if they're gonna look at my ankle. I don't know who to ask. I might have to make another appointment with the doctor but I don't know if that doctor is the right doctor for the ankle. I remember seeing the Ortho doctor at the clinic last year but he gave me a prescription for orthotics and told me to go see the PT doctor. I realize I might have fucked this up. I am an idiot when it comes to explaining shit to doctors. I think I take too long to say things or use too many words or am too female cuz I've never been able to say everything I want to tell them without them interrupting me or like brushing me off. Not mentioning the ankle might be my fault.

I sliced my finger with a potato peeler earlier. I would have taken bloody photos but I was too busy trying to stop the bleeding and dressing the wound like a growed up hooman person.
