lol. Agreed. Harry and Taylor fans would be all over this. We are all in our 40s and above, just give us new music without scouring the internet.
Taylor Swift actually gives her fans real puzzles to solve that lead to actual content.
People were upset with the Backspacer and Gigaton promotions as well
I was just bummed there were no Gigaton billboards in my city to chase down. And then bummed about the visualizer movie dates cancelled due to covid, etc.
Fully expecting that black page to slowly evolve over the next week. Lots of tracking code in it to measure social media reach, potentially a mini-player from Spotify, etc. I'd be shocked if that doesn't become the destination for their social channels to hype things up beyond the 10c email.
The newsletter was going to be nothing anyways, so not really missing out on anything

I’m sure whoever pitched this, marketing or their agency made it sound better in theory. If this happened before the listening party and we didn’t already know the album name it may have worked better

For sure.

Black holes are among the most mysterious cosmic objects, much studied but not fully understood. These objects aren’t really holes. They’re huge concentrations of matter packed into very tiny spaces. A black hole is so dense that gravity just beneath its surface, the event horizon, is strong enough that nothing – not even light – can escape. The event horizon isn’t a surface like Earth’s or even the Sun’s. It’s a boundary that contains all the matter that makes up the black hole.
There is much we don’t know about black holes, like what matter looks like inside their event horizons. However, there is a lot that pearl jam fans do know about black holes.
Let's not confuse black holes and dark matter, which are distinct concepts. Dark matter permeates the universe. Black holes occur throughout the universe, but they are mostly isolated phenomena.

You lost me like the email.
A black hole is an object in space with a boundary, left behind after the collapse of a massive star or cloud of gas (or formed out of the merger of two or more black holes so formed). They are scattered around the universe. The closest known black hole to Earth is over 1,500 light years away.
Dark matter consists of an as-yet-undiscovered subatomic fundamental particle that exists everywhere throughout the universe. Dark matter exists in the room you are in right now.

This. There was never going to be much for them to say in the newsletter. All the new album info is coming either Monday before the single at midnight or some other time later in the week shortly after the single release.
Why even send a real newsletter which would be quickly forgotten with huge news on its heels? Instead, they gave us a hint (though we already knew the album was Dark Matter). So, Friday a tease, Sat a tease, tomorrow who knows?, and Monday I bet we get info. Pretty much same script as Gigaton.
Honestly, I think it's fun. I've not been this hyped for a new Pearl Jam album in years. I wasn't so hyped about Gigaton because I was worried about the virus that shall not be named, even though it had been the longest stretch between albums. Then Eddie's solo album came out and it was excellent. I can't wait to see what Andrew Watt has done with the whole band involved. It's kind of cool to have a superfan producing an album, I can't wait to hear it. I'm ok waiting a couple more days. The anticipation is part of the experience!
"The waiting drove me mad, you're finally here and I'm a mess."
Once we got the tease yesterday, I pretty much assumed we’d be getting one tease per day until the single release. Though there wasn’t much in this newsletter, I much prefer that than a run of the mill newsletter that pretends that nothing big is coming.
I don’t get all the complaints. These guys are in their fourth decade as a band, still going strong, about to announce their biggest tour in years, a new album (granted, I’d rather it not be a new album tour), and they played a silly game with the fan club email today. So what. It’s cool they still exist and we can go see them this year.

I don't think it was lazy. I think it was misguided. I think they got sold on a marketing presentation that over promised what it could deliver. This is kind of a lame launch that could have been more, but I don't think lack of effort is the reason why.
