At that point - 3-2 count, 2 outs, base loaded, the umpire just has to get that call right. Ridiculous. Bring on the robots - these guys are horrible.
And they would have been down one With Harper coming up in that situation. Completely altered  the landscape of that game.

They should at least be able to challenge balls and strikes

Nah just get rid of them. So many jobs have been replaced by technology. I don't see why home plate umpires are exempt from being replaced.

Pretty sure they're already doing this in the minors?

I'd think it would be hard to get rid of them since they have a union though, right?

I should clarify, don't get rid of them, but the home plate umpire shouldn't be calling balls and strikes. As they've tested out in the minor leagues, just have someone in the booth monitoring the "box" that represents the strike zone, and he can be in the home plate umpire's ear to tell him to call a ball or strike.

Have the umpires keep doing what they do but give teams 3 ball/strike challenges per game. The review should be instant and on the scoreboard, like line calls in tennis. If you get all 3 right you can keep challenging until you get one wrong.

I'm here solving all the world's problems, tip your waitresses.

A friend of mine just told me today that he read that the Robo ump is 98% accurate on Balls & Strikes in the Minor Leagues.

So does the home plate umpire just do check swings and other "out" calls?I could see that working in the majors.

Phills needed a day off. I think they have another one on Thursday as well. Should be a good series against Toronto.

3 game losing streaks suck but when you log onto twitter it's as if the sky is falling, again. 2nd best record over last 3 months or something. They'll right the ship. Go Phils.

I just hate how this offense disappears at random. They don't have any safety valve for when the ball stops going out of the ballpark. I am absolutely sure they really miss Brandon Marsh as well.

The pitching's there, basically everyone in the lineup is underperforming. I take that as, of course, a bad thing and a good thing. No better time to get hot than in September. Tread water and hold onto that #1 WC spot. Their "weak" schedule the rest of the way is a little misleading, though that's mainly due to having 7 games left against Atlanta. But for sure some bad teams in there to beat up on. Can't wait for this SF series, going to 2 of the 3 games.

Cubs and Reds are the sneaky teams in this WC hunt imo, especially the Cubs. They both have better/easier schedules the rest of the way, and I think the Marlins have been playing over their heads & will choke.

33 years ago yesterday. Remember watching it in my bedroom as a young buck.  THESE jerseys (specifically this version with the stitches in the "P" and the Independence Hall logo on the sleeve) should replace the powder blues. I actually saw someone rocking a Von Hayes one of these last week--I'd totally rock that if I can find it somewhere

Wish this wasn't the Giants broadcast though:

That should've been a perfecto - Charlie Hayes error, and erased by a double play.

    First for me, too.

That's funny - when I went out to SF in June the dude I was sitting next to at the Giants game was like, "I like Philly. I was out there in the 90s and actually saw a no-hitter against the Giants." I responded, "Oh yeah? You were at Mulholland's no-hitter? Awesome." Guy ended up telling me he played/pitched against both Bonds and Randy Johnson in high school, which I thought was very cool.

The Schwarber homer was a bomb and it was cool and all....but is it too much to ask of your leadoff hitter to get the average up to the god damn mendoza line at some point?

Honestly, I'm more bothered right now that Stott keeps hitting in the bottom 1/3 of the lineup.

I think the lineup needs to look this way as we get closer to September:

    1. Turner
    2. Stott
    3. Harper
    4. Nick
    5. Schwarber
    6. Bohm
    7. JT
    8/9: Marsh/Rojas/Cave/Sosa

And I really don't know how Dylan Covey keeps getting work.

Yeah I feel like it's safe to get Trea back in the leadoff spot he was signed for. Stott is probably the best hitter right now and that's the guy who is supposed to hit #2 in major league baseball. I think you're pretty close there JP.

Can't believe someone(s) other than Covey were sent down to the minors. Dude is brutal. Phillies fans put that "nice guys" schtick way to the side for him.
