I like it a lot, but I don't know if I could afford it. I still buy CDs, lol.
I've been fortunate enough to see Pearl Jam live.

I am hanging in the balance of a perfect finished plan

The Pono PJ (or any artist) edition is a no-brainer to me. If you don't like it, sell it at a profit. The only risk I see is if Pono gets bad press in the next 8 months or cant deliver.

I would be a lot more tempted if the price included access to a library service with a ton of music available in the proper format. I ditched my CDs long ago, so there is just no way I will pay $400 and then have to re-build my music catalog at $2 per song.

Not until I hear it in action, at least.

Do you have to pay to upload your own music already onto it? I thought you could put anything you currently own on it.
No...seems like you can throw pretty much anything at it and it will play it. But it also seems like the whole point is to avoid lossy formats like .mp3, and you will only get the true benefit of the player if you listen to lossless formats.

I don't have any cds left to re-rip into lossless formats, and I don't feel like re-buying my music catalog or going through the (gargantuan) effort of finding and downloading everything anew.

I will be much more interested if they have a service similar to Spotify where you can pay a small amount per month and easily access whatever the hell you want. However, I'm very curious to watch it play out and can't wait to hear one for myself.

  • So the way I see it the only songs that will sound better are the ones in the Pono format (or lossless from a CD or flac download)? If I take all the MP3s that are already on my iPod and simply put them on this thing, they will sound the exact same, no?

    I'm holding back too...Just like I did with HD-DVD's....Phew...

I'll never forget getting into arguments after arguments on the old boards & many other online message boards months before the release of the Blu-ray. Ah yes, the Blu-ray vs HD-DVD wars. Good times! I fully supported the Blu-ray, that it would take over the HD market. After months & months of arguing with pro HD-DVD users, my baby won. :)

I believe Pono will do great things. It will be a tough sell to kids & teenagers who don't have that kind of money to spend on a new portable audio player. But to those knowledgeable adults that have a true passion to the sound of the music, will take this & really love what it will deliver.

How does this pledging work?? I pledged $400 for pj pono... Then went back for the NY poster and now I'm under the impression they replaced the original with this $100 pledge.... Got a message that says It changed my pledge

The pj pledge I went thru with an amazon checkout.... The poster no

Anyone that can shed light on this? It's a lil confusing

I believe you can only backup one item. You can't do more then one.

    ..

Whoa! It's now down to 152 PJ PonoPlayers!

...149 and counting.... It's a hoot watching the countdown to zero on these. We should see a lot of folks on the fence hopping on board as extinction nears. Will be surprised if there's any left at COB today.

One can only choose one thing to pledge. If you want 2 items. you'll need to create another account. Only 1 pledge per project unfortunately.

This and other high end DAP's have better components and should sound much better than an iPod. However, different iPods have different components and may sound different. The 2nd version of the Nano apparently has the best sound among Nanos. According to the article below, the iPhone 4s sounds better than the 5/5S. In my opinion, iPods/iPhones dont even compare to high end DAP's. Cowon is still my favorite given the sound quality and price point.

Did you ever use that inferior Pearl Jam iPod item? If not then no. Not an idiot.
Many of us are collectors & will probably not open this one.
So you know, we can always buy 2 & open one of them. ;)

I couldn't help myself - I signed up for the Pearl Jam edition Pono player.

I've been wanting something that could play FLACs so this will be perfect.

When they say that it is signed by Pearl Jam - do you think someone will just sign generically "Pearl Jam" on it - or will we get the signatures of Eddie, Mike, Stone, Matt and Jeff all on it?

good question, I wonder if anyone has asked them this? I would expect it to be signed by the 5 members?

Love how this has just taken off! Relieved that there doesn't seem to be any spring tour dates planned, now I can save up for the (hopefully) fall dates! Or I should say try to save! :)
