  • Let Me Explain Freedom of Speech to all the Phil Robertson, Duck Dynasty Supporters

    http://www.forwardprogressives.com/let- ... upporters/

I’m sure by now most of you have heard about Phil Robertson’s anti-gay rant he went off on during an interview with GQ magazine, and the indefinite suspension by A&E that soon followed.

And wow, this situation has sure showcased how many people just don’t understand what “freedom of speech” means. So I thought I’d explain it nice and simply to those who wrongfully believe this is some kind of attack on free speech.

You know, since apparently I wasn’t clear enough the first time. Millions of people seem unable to grasp this simple concept.

Freedom of Speech: The legal means to say almost anything you want. Meaning that as private citizens, we’re allowed to say nearly anything (with a few exceptions of course) that we want without fear of legal prosecution for it.

Unless I’ve missed something, Mr. Robertson faces no legal ramifications for what he said. That’s what freedom of speech means. Freedom of speech does not mean we can say anything we want without ramifications for what we say from our peers or employers.

We’re free to be racist, bigoted, anti-Semitic — pretty much anything we want. We can be these things, no matter how ignorant, because that’s what the Constitution gives us the right to be.

But that doesn’t mean within a society we won’t face consequences for those “freedoms.” The suspension of Phil Robertson is not an attack on Robertson’s right to believe how he wants. It’s a consequence from an employer for him expressing an opinion which A&E feels represents them in a negative light.

When he signed his contract, it almost certainly included a clause that says he’s a representative of A&E and is expected to act accordingly. All public figures, whether they want to be or not, are representatives of something. Be it a company, a brand, a sports team or league – it’s the price that comes along with fame.
So, yes, he was free to say what he said – and now he’s paying the consequences for it.

Just ask Alec Baldwin or Martin Bashir, two gentlemen who were fired (well, Bashir “resigned” but it’s clear he was forced to do so) for expressing their “freedom of speech” rights. Hell, weren’t conservatives calling for Bashir’s firing? So it’s absolutely hypocritical that they’re outraged by Robertson’s suspension. Especially considering Bashir only had derogatory words for Sarah Palin whereas Robertson ignorantly bashed tens of millions of homosexuals.

And Alec Baldwin’s show was canceled for anti-LGBT remarks as well. I didn’t see many conservatives up in arms about that — but clearly it’s all about whose ox is being gored now, isn’t it?

Bottom line: What do you expect the answer from a little educated, Christina hillbilly from Backwater, Southern South is going to be when asked about gays? Seriously.
If you think it is not going you be exactly what he said... then, you might want to take a look at yourself and re-assess your people reading skills.
    ...
That said... I don't agree with him. That is his rightful opinion... I my rightful opposing view.
    ...
It has nothing to do with the First Amendment. It has everything to do with an employer's right omit an employee from representing them... either directly of indirectly.
    That's all it is.
    ...
The media loves this shit because it is meaningless and stupid and they know their audience clearly understands shit that is meaningless and stupid and eats that shit up.

To Phil and his family, you signed on to be part of the corporate TV media machine so you bear full responsibility for your actions when representing that machine in public. Deal with it in a business-like manner. Your show is popular because people need to be reminded of the diversity, yes diversity of people and their livelihood that make up the culture of this country. It’s not all DC and Wall Street. If you walk away you become just another political vagina to be used, and, we the people lose another look into the diverse culture that makes and keeps this country strong and moving forward.

To Cruz, Palin and Jindal would you even give this a second thought if Phil and his family if they were not wealthy and on a successful reality TV show? Of course not, because you’re nothing more than goddamn bloodsucking leeches latching on to people in their weak moments for your own political agendas. You’re the same people who snub your noses behind their backs and look upon ‘their kind’ as nothing more than ignorant, backwards rednecks.

To the gay community, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. The man likes vaginas, he's not trying to stop gay rights, he's not out there like those Westboro Church people, he simply likes vaginas and believes in his church teachings. Get over it.
SIN EATERS--We take the moral excrement we find in this equation and we bury it down deep inside of us so that the rest of our case can stay pure. That is the job. We are morally indefensible and absolutely necessary.

    Pro-vagina maybe.. but not anti-gay..

He never said its wrong or bad to be gay.. he just said he likes girls..

so the dude likes vagina more than male butts.. what is the big deal?
hey i'm pro vagina, but i am pro gay rights too. i am all for human rights for everyone.

but when the main face of a corporate entity talks like this, that corporation has a duty to act or it will face a pr nightmare that they might not recover from. i am thinking it is not just the quotes on gays and lesbians, but he insulted muslims, and any group of people that are not christian as well.

    Phil on sin:
“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men. Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”

Phil on letting God do the judging:
“We never, ever judge someone on who’s going to heaven, hell. That’s the Almighty’s job. We just love ’em, give ’em the good news about Jesus—whether they’re homosexuals, drunks, terrorists. We let God sort ’em out later, you see what I’m saying?”

Phil on what happens to society without Jesus:
“All you have to do is look at any society where there is no Jesus. I’ll give you four: Nazis, no Jesus. Look at their record. Uh, Shintos? They started this thing in Pearl Harbor. Any Jesus among them? None. Communists? None. Islamists? Zero. That’s eighty years of ideologies that have popped up where no Jesus was allowed among those four groups. Just look at the records as far as murder goes among those four groups.”

I can't believe everybody has their pantys in wad over these comments. :fp:

All of these folks have no clue how the corporate world works? When you're hired, you're paid to represent the company. Say anything to disgrace the company, consider yourself fired. It goes without saying, yet, the world is full of purely stupid, TV watching idiots.

    Here is one thing:
"My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter. It points me to the man who once in loneliness, surrounded by a few followers, recognized these Jews for what they were and summoned men to fight against them and who, God's truth! was greatest not as a sufferer but as a fighter. In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and adders. ...Today, after two thousand years, with deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before the fact that it was for this that He had to shed his blood upon the Cross".
    - Adolf Hitler, speech on April 12, 1922
    ...
Christians need to embrace the truth that the Nazis were Christians who were warped by their religious fervor and their national pride. Trying to pretend the Nazis were anything but Christians, tarnishes their credability.
People make mistakes... Christians are people... Christians make mistakes and people will forgive them as long as they own up to their mistakes instead of falsely blaming others for them.

I've been thinking about the highlighted point above throughout this discussion. That's kind of been overlooked. The fact is, this guy has enough money such that I'm sure he didn't care if he got fired. Maybe he wanted to get fired so he can go off and fuck his... I mean fuck around with his ducks or whatever and decided to go out with a big splash (read: LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME!!) and do so without caring who he trashed. And yes, GF, we say some inflammatory things here, often in reaction to things that bug us, but we say them in our small little circle here, not broadcast to the idiot wind.

You know what I first thought about all of this? I hoped that the family would leave the show. They certainly don't need the series and this is certainly not worth fighting the station about. I'm hoping they come to their senses, rather than continue to drag it all through the mud. Something tells me that there may be an ounce of decency in the family. But we'll see.

Go ahead, sir. Express your true feelings and beliefs here... I don't care... you are free to do so.
Just like the KKK or the Neo Nazis or the Westboro Baptist Church... I stand in direct opposition to their views, but will argue for them if the government attempts to stifle them.
I will argue any points to try to use to uphold and support your belief, but I will argue in your favor to express them.
I would much rather deal with a Klansman that is honest with his beliefs than a closet racist who lies to me about their true beliefs. I want to know where these types of people are so I can avoid them... which is of my choosing.
    ...
So, go ahead, unleash your true feeling about Gays, Muslims, Mexicans and Blacks. I would rather hear your truths, than lies that try to steer me otherwise.

I don't know if anybody here is flagrantly homophobic or not but if so, I'd rather they just state so. It's better to know what someone really thinks rather have to guess or assume. And I think it's a pretty well accepted notion that people who are homophobic are insecure in themselves. For example- three times that I can think of I've been referred to as "miss" or "ma'am" (maybe because I have fairly thick, long hair? I dunno.) A lady did that the other day in the store and then took a better look at me and noticed my soul patch. I just smiled. Shit, I don't care- call me "miss", "ma'ma", "pussy"- whatever. Heck, my own wife thought I was gay when we first met. We joke about it. But I think some guys would go ballistic if that happened to them because they aren't comfortable with themselves.

So if any of you have a problem with all this, look, it's almost 2014. Time to get over it. Who cares who puts what where? It's an individuals choice.

  • Funny you should say that LOL...thought my husband was gay also....just in touch with feminism!!! And also agree...would rather someone tell me up front their beliefs...than to be shocked when it comes out....mostly when I start to to really respect you as a person.
