Duck Dynasty Debate

A&E has suspended Duck dynasty patriarch Phil Roberstson for anti gay remarks he made. He said "it seems like, to me, a vagina -as a man- would be more desirable than a man's anus. That's just me. I'm just thinking: Tjeres more there! She's got more to offer. I mean, come on dudes. You know what I'm saying?"

As ignorant as I think these comments are, this guy has the right to think them and say them. I guess A&E has the right to suspend him as well. Which brings me to my question, who actually owns the show? Its a reality show. Does the camera crew not shoot him for a month? Or does he just get edited out of the show for a while??

A&E doesn't have the balls to cancel the show due to its 11.8 million viewers. Seems a bit hypocritical to just suspend the guy if you don't want to be associated with anti gay remarks. But then again, should the show get cancelled because the guy is exercising his freedom of speech?

A&E pays him... he is basically an employee. But, he is also a spokesman of the television show that A&E pays for.

hey i'm pro vagina, but i am pro gay rights too. i am all for human rights for everyone.

but when the main face of a corporate entity talks like this, that corporation has a duty to act or it will face a pr nightmare that they might not recover from. i am thinking it is not just the quotes on gays and lesbians, but he insulted muslims, and any group of people that are not christian as well.

    Phil on sin:
“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men. Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”

Phil on letting God do the judging:
“We never, ever judge someone on who’s going to heaven, hell. That’s the Almighty’s job. We just love ’em, give ’em the good news about Jesus—whether they’re homosexuals, drunks, terrorists. We let God sort ’em out later, you see what I’m saying?”

Phil on what happens to society without Jesus:
“All you have to do is look at any society where there is no Jesus. I’ll give you four: Nazis, no Jesus. Look at their record. Uh, Shintos? They started this thing in Pearl Harbor. Any Jesus among them? None. Communists? None. Islamists? Zero. That’s eighty years of ideologies that have popped up where no Jesus was allowed among those four groups. Just look at the records as far as murder goes among those four groups.”

Personally, i really don't give a shit either way about this guy... because, seriously... that's exactly what I would expect that from him. They are basically, the Hillbilly Kardashians. I don't give a fuuuuck what the Kardashians have to say... and the same applies to them.

I don't have tv so I've never seen the show, my only comment is that I find it extremely disturbing that this is what it takes to get people in an uproar. A comment from a reality tv guy.

Don't let the real stuff like NDAA, the federal reserve, NSA, patriot act, TSA, politicians not upholding their oaths, runaway spending, and reckless monetary policy bother you. That stuff would make people actually think, and I firmly believe most people want to be dumb.
  • If you can be fired for being gay... you can get suspended for embarrassing your employer and being a sexist, racist, homophobic asshole.

    Sucks, doesn't it?

you give people too much credit. they are too lazy to read news or investigate further on their own so they tune into the redneck, jesus, huntin' half hour to distract them from how bad they are being cornholed by the system.

I really think it's being blown out of proportion. I don't get why anyone would be surprised that he made those comments. I watch the show and it's pretty obvious that Phil has some opinions about the way things are "supposed" to be that not everyone will agree with. I think the amount of media attention the story is getting is silly, but the network suspending him is just ridiculous.

And just for the record, I don't agree with his statement.

  • maybe if he prays about it the network heads will change their mind.

this is about money, advertising, and sponsorships.

    nothing more.

the network is always, always, going to look out for its bottom line. nothing worse than having a network that people don't watch.

Oh Prince, you know I love you. Agree with you 100%.
  • I think those, like Sarah Palin, who is calling this whole thing an attack on Free Speech is dumb, I'm sorry.

He exercised his right to say what he believes, and the people he offended have the right to call him an asshole.

    Simple as that.

Well, it is an attack on free speech. Except this is case one is suffering from the use of that speech. He has the right to speak his mind, even if he says something dumb, and his employer has the right to do what they did.

In the end it's another non-issue, and another non-issue that if the groups on BOTH sides of this debate used similar energy to change important issues, that I've previously mentioned, and then we might really improve society.

This is the same thing that if I owned a private business and I refused service to someone based on the color of their skin, I'd have to expect to suffer some consequences. It is capitalism and a functioning market in action.

It's like the cake makers in Colorado, they absolutely have the right to deny making a cake for anyone, no matter what. But then these people in return have the right to protest them and picket them into going out of business.

I am VERY disturbed that a judge ordered them to bake the cake, that is a clear violation of the First Amendment.

A&E are hypocrites. They knew what his views were then act shocked. Half the shows they air exploit rednecks that most likely share similar views

No hair off Duck Commanders back on this. They own a multi-million dollar business that can't be killed off by politically correct distributors.

A&E lost by far their highest rated program and are left with a bunch of underperforming shows. So who is the real loser?

In that statement he called out a lot more people than just gay people. I guess we should all be upset, huh? Maybe they got rid of him for calling out slanderers.

But I'm not. I support his right to say those things and I support the show's right to fire him for whatever reason it wants.

Considering they wrapped up shooting for season 4 which premiers 1/15/14, I'm under the assumption that these are PR moves. It's like suspending someone from school two weeks after finals are finished. And there will be plenty of time for people to forgive and forget by the time season 5 filming starts.

If A&E is serious, they would cancel next season where Phil will star in every episode. But they won't because they will lose a ton of money. It is the highest rated cable show in history after all.
  • Too much fuss from Americans either supporting or opposing this guy. This reality TV celeb has ZERO impact on our lives and no one should let him have an impact on their lives. If you're gay, don't let a CELEBRITY bother you. If you're an anti-gay Christian, why support a celebrity? Why run to his aid? Why all the fuss because he was rightfully suspended by his employer? What has he done for you? NOTHING!
