Yes. And he has made some amazing music over the years. It's a shame people don't "get" him.

I don't don't think it was too soon. Makes no difference to him. I love Lou Reed, but I do understand why some wouldn't get the appeal (except for "Perfect Day"... can't imagine anyone not liking that song).

  • yowza.

I fucking love Radiohead, Incubus, DMB, and AIC... all these bands mentioned have had a PROFOUND effect on me. Arcade Fire is really growing on me.

Muse is definitely one I never got. This one I will get slaughtered for... Never could get into Queen. I'll have to think of some others.

I pretty much can't stand The Rolling Stones, so I guess I don't "get" them either.

He's certainly made some good stuff, but he also has made some of the worst music in the history of recorded music.

For me it's DMB, Phish, and Grateful Dead.

I'll never understand when people say you don't "get" something. It's like they're telling you that you're just unable to comprehend the music. It's okay to say you don't like something because you think it's shit. This is in no way aimed at the OP because so many people use the term and it's been bugging me for years.

Now, a few bands that I think are shit that others like are:
-Tool (pretentious ten minute songs with lyrics that believe they're deeper than that actually are)
-Led Zeppelin (Robert Plant ruins this band. He's arguably the biggest d-bag frontman ever. They have a few great songs, but I will never put them on the pedestal that others do)
-Death Grips (Bullshit mumbles disguised as something that's smart. White people who read Pitchfork LOVE to jerk off to these guys)
-Kanye West (Again, the white male, Pitchfork reader, version of a genius)
-The Black Keys (Fuck these guys)

Sorry if anyone here reads Pitchfork.

I looked at this as bands I don't hate - but don't understand why they're so big or popular - my contribution was Mumford and Sons - I don't hate them per se, they sound OK...in the background...in a loud barroom....but I don't see why they're so big. As opposed to, say, Creed or Nickleback which are just trash in my opinion.

Yeah, well saying we don't "get" a band's music simply means that we don't personally see the appeal while many other people do. It sounds a lot better to say we don't get it than it does to say something like Led Zeppelin is shit, which is clearly ridiculous. Just because one doesn't enjoy a band doesn't mean they're shit. I don't like The Rolling Stones' music, but I'm not so arrogant as to suggest they are shit just because they're not my taste. I just don't "get" them.

  • Wow, Radiohead, Arcade Fire, and Muse are getting killed in this thread but they are all top current bands for me.

I was never able to get into Jimi Hendrix. I respect the man and don't hate the music, just always find myself wanting to listen to something else. I'm kinda that way with Soundgarden, too. After two or three songs I've generally had enough.

Alright, since I was one of the folks that listed Soundgarden, I'll ask.... if it's not their association and we all agree they sound nothing alike, why would it be shocking to like one and not the other? What links them anymore than any other two bands from similar times/roots?
  • Since I was the OP for this thread and there seems to be some confusion as to what "get" means in reference to the original question I will clarify. Someone above on this page nailed it. It's not that you hate the band necissarily, just don't understand why they are as big as they are among other people. It is ok to like some of their songs or even an album or two. I was just trying to spark some conversation, not really arguments, although I figured that would happen because if someone lists a band you like you will try to defend it.
Someone above listed ICP. If I ever wanted to give them a try I probably wouldn't get them either but that's one group I will never even give a chance, and I'm open to listen to most anything.
