no, they're not that kind of plane. They can't carry that kind of load or fly that close to the ground. Planes for firefighting have to be a totally different kind of craft.

As Twitchy reported yesterday, the administration had no problems trying to lock World War II veterans out of Washington’s war memorials last week, but the red carpet was rolled out on the National Mall today for a previously scheduled immigration reform rally. The Park Service determined that the ”Camino Americano: March for Immigrant Dignity and Respect,” sponsored in part by the SEIU and AFL-CIO, was covered under the First Amendment. WTF

Despite the shutdown, there were plenty of Capitol police on hand to greet hundreds of protesters.

Ok... I'm totally confused... if Obama is a "dictator," then why were people who AGREE with him arrested for attending a protest?

And why, if he's a dictator, were police there to "greet" them? I mean... you're not really thinking this one through, I don't think.

Too many people beg for big government to solve their problems. It is long overdue that all property get turned over to the states. Aside from DC the General government should not be in the property owning business.

True. Unsung started a thread on the debt ceiling crisis in January. A thread on Miss America eclipsed total responses in a mere 4 day just a few months ago.

I don't imagine a lawsuit that begins "The park was closed but we went in anyway" will get very far.

If you want to argue that national parks should be turned over to the states, fine. But your assertion that there was no legitimate reason for government property to be shut down during a government shut down remains incorrect.

Well it's not government property at all, the taxpayers own it. The government is only supposed to manage it and I'd prefer the state govt manage property in their state.

Great, we agree. Taxpayer owned property is managed by the government. If you want to turn that property over to state governments like that in Illinois, also great. But that does not change the status quo today.

The federal government shuts down --> properties managed by the federal government shut down = legitimate reason

That would make for interesting discussion, Jimmy, but I hope that never happens. Our national parks are, for the most part, our finest. My bias might be as a Californian who has seen far more state parks closed or mis-managed than our national parks. Having the national parks closed right now is a bummer but most likely temporary. But here in California, many on our state parks have been closed for years and more are closed each year (and foolishly so because the cost of running the parks is less than the revenue brought in to the communities around them when they are open.) To my way of thinking, our National Parks are one of the best things going in terms of management at a federal level not to mention that they are our most beautiful and/or symbolic places in terms of who and what we are as a nation.

Agree 100%. I regret not making the time to visit more of them so far in my life.

Well this is nowhere near a government shutdown so let's be clear there. This is a joke.

I had hoped that Washington would have turned into a ghost town and the lobbyists had gone back to their cubbyholes in hell but we weren't so lucky. Instead we have a President that picks and chooses what to close and keep open, and he does so with a dramatic flair. "Oh look, without government we can't have amber alerts or parks, see how much you need us?"

I see very little difference between a Dem or a member of the GOP, BOTH have driven us to this point, BOTH are guilty, BOTH are useless. Their policies of reckless spending and out of control quantitative easing are destroying this country. It isn't Obama himself (I never have favored impeachment because it wouldn't change anything) it is ALL of them minus less than twenty or so. But it is the Executive branch that has been deciding what stays open or closed.
