politions and their bickering.....if everybody in government is laied off why don't we just start over and put in new people and clean HOUSE. and yes Obama too !

Godfather.

Congress blew by a midnight deadline to pass a crucial spending bill, triggering the beginning of a partial government shutdown – the first in 17 years.

The failure means the gears of the federal government will start to slow down on Tuesday, though hundreds of thousands of federal workers will remain on the job. Though it's been a long time since the last one, this marks the 18th shutdown since 1977.

Lawmakers missed the deadline after being unable to resolve their stand-off over ObamaCare, despite a volley of 11th-hour counterproposals from the House. Each time, Senate Democrats refused to consider any changes to ObamaCare as part of the budget bill.

House Republicans, for their part, refused to back off their demand that the budget bill include some measures to rein in the health care law – a large part of which, the so-called insurance “exchanges,” goes into effect on Tuesday.

Are you affected by the shutdown? Got a message for Washington? Send it to iReport and be part of CNN's coverage.

Washington (CNN) -- The game of chicken failed. Neither side blinked. Now millions will pay the price.

Americans watched a colossal failure by Congress overnight and the shutdown of their government.

For weeks, the House and the Senate blamed and bickered, each claiming they're standing up for what the public wants.

In the end, it led to the one outcome nobody wanted -- one that will stop 800,000 Americans from getting paid and could cost the economy about $1 billion a week

  • Just as the 24 hour news media will have you believe, this is a HUGE, SCARY deal!

But it's not. It's happened before. We can move on, without being fearful that the world will end as we know it. But will the republicans move on and deal with reality? That's the big question.

How about this - seeing that our leaders caused this shutdown, they should take a severe cut in pay every day it's shut down. Or better yet, fired.

An issue like abortion or gun control will pop up and everyone will forget about their incompetance.

Pay cuts won't do anything. Already being subsidized by pharma, defense and other interests. Firing may work.

I don't believe this time there will be any distractions to hide behind, the white house has been filled with controversey for far too long.

    Now what?

The Democrats will point fingers at the GOP, the GOP will point fingers at Obama, and we will all, in the end, get fucked.

I believe that The Cabinet continues to receive their salary, thus a secret order isn't necessary.

Love it ... busloads of WWII vets aren't gonna let a Parks & Museums Shutdown to stop them from seeing the WWII memorial.

The rest of us should be taking some notes on how to deal with a dysfunctional group of leaders ... especially those that have planned vacations.

If they think I am staying out of the backcountry of Yellowstone this weekend because they are closed, they don't know Snakeduck.

How ironic that they closed down the open air monuments then hire people to make sure no one goes there.

Agreed. The first order of the government shutdown ... Let's close down a bunch of mountains and trees and air!

But we gotta keep sending foreign aid so they can buy our planes and bazookas.

Very ironic! Further irony: I just mailed my annual contribution to the National Parks Conservation Association. NPCA is "the only independent, membership organization devoted exclusively to advocacy on behalf of the National Parks System".

It greatly saddens me to see our National Parks closed.

All of this and people will still think that their lives will be better with "more government" in it... They have effectively shown that they are not very reliable.
