If I would have known that the album would start with Getaway into MYM before I heard Sirens, I wouldn't have been so bothered by it. Best album starters since Yield.

i wish i would have waited. but i've only listened to it twice, so maybe it will sound better when i listen to the whole album.

I am starting to like Sirens more than I did. :)

  • Hey all. Yeah, the song takes a listen or two to get used to. Should be cool live.

Here is one thought that struck me today. First a question, anyone know who wrote this one? The reason being is I know Eddie has spent some time in the last couple years with Bruce Springsteen, and there are elements of this song that remind me of a Springsteen song, particularly from plus or minus "The River" era. Seriously. Anyone agree?

This song is really growing on me and will end up being a favorite over time I am sure. Looking forward to receiving my CD in the mail any day. It shipped sometime over the weekend per my email.

Hmmm, I still get that vibe. I will enjoy finding out what Mike does with it live.

I listened to the you tube version so much and loving it!! and now, after listening to the album version...I really prefer the 'live' one as performed on the video. Less polished and sounds much better IMHO. What an album! Wasn't super excited after BS but this is just AWESOME...

  • I'm at the first listen of the album version of Sirens. Only first. I want to say that now I know what McCready was talking about when he hinted a Pink Floyd vibe on it....<3 <3<3

    I love Sirens.

I think it's a mature, contemporary Black. Not necessarily in musical style, but pace and lyrically.

It has a nice Dave Gilmour 80s Pink Floyd vibe to it.

    Excellent song.
  • People are still talking about this one eh???

I just wanted to be the guy who bumps this to the FIFTIETH PAGE of posts. Holy crap.

Is it really that surprising? This is a revolutionary Pearl Jam song and frankly, a fucking amazing esoteric love poem.

OR the worst song they've ever recorded, depending on which posts you read. ;)

I guess it's a line in the sand for people who listen for mosh pit riffs and anthems. I always connected heavily to Eddie's poetry, especially starting around No Code. To me, Sirens is one of his boldest poetic achievements. Consider this line:

"It's a fragile thing, this life we lead
If I think too much I can get over-
    Whelmed by the grace
By which we live our lives
    With death over our shoulders"

It's just impeccably written, and the way he sings "overwhelmed" is so fantastic and new. Make it new, as Ezra Pound said!

For me, as a huge fan of atmospheric music by bands like Pink Floyd and Radiohead, this marriage of ethereal sounds with a moment of enlightened poetry is as good as it gets. I want to see it performed live soooo badly!

I totally agree. As I said, I also here ethereal atmospheric sounds that recall "Darkness on the Edge of Town" or certain songs from "The River" that give that haunting, thoughtful wandering feel. Great stuff!
  • What a beautiful song.
I teared up almost listening to it via my earphones on the train ride to work this morning.
It is up there with Black and Nothingman.

I had previously just listened to the album as a digital download. Yesterday and today, I was able to listen to the actual CD on my vehicle's killer Harman Kardon sound system, and the bass and drums blew me away. "Sirens" in particular has incredible Nick Mason-influenced booming drum sound.

  • This is the most unashamedly sentimental song the band has ever released and stands to become a first dance fixture at weddings across the globe.

seems more a pop album than a grunge alternative band!!
I think a Jonas Brothers album has more riffs this

where was the strength and energy of this band??????

I don't know if that many people are going to want to choose a song about dying for their wedding dance.
