Just posting my frustration with healthcare.
My wife's doctor thinks she may have an uncommon disorder that amplifies her arthritis more. Closest specialist is almost 3 hours away. It took a few weeks for the referral to go through. She heard back last night.....next available appointment is January 2026! Yes, 2026.
I understand it's a specialist and there's just limited doctors, but over a year? Come on.
My sister in law was diagnosed with skin cancer a few years ago. She gets the call that the biopsy was cancerous and to see a specialist and ran into the same thing. What a horrible thing to get a diagnosis like that and then be told you have to wait six months for someone to look at it.

    Ridiculous

She ended up driving to Indianapolis to see a Dr...maybe 3-4 weeks after diagnosis. It all turned out good but what a fucked up system.

There just aren't enough doctors, especially specialists, to treat our aging population anymore. The older we get, the more care we need.
I don't know why so few people want to become doctors anymore, but I've heard some say that there's just too much paperwork to do these days and others are frightened off by the law suites filed by ambulance-chasing lawyers.
Anyway, glad your story had a happy conclusion.

My wife was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis when she was about 30, pretty young for that. And it was a pretty advanced case of it. She's been on Humira since it was basically new. Every time we switch insurance companies she has to jump through all sorts of hoops to stay on it. They keep denying her coverage until she does X Y and Z, which take months to do. And most recently they flat out denied Humira because there is a similar generic available. She's been on that for a few months. But it's infuriating knowing that she's found a drug that works, and they're forcing her to go off it and try something else to save money.
I don't even remember what she might have now, I've never heard of it. But the symptoms are pretty similar so it's been masked for a while. Nothing life threatening, but things like fatigue and swelling in hands that are compounded with arthritis. She's spoken to her arthritis specialist and general doctor, basically there's nothing they can do other than suggest see the specialist, he's the only one that can determine if that's what she has or not. And looks like there's only 1 in the state. So it's a 13 month waitlist to see him.
I don't think it will change a whole lot other than give more documentation to try and stay on Humira or something like that. And maybe get on disability since she's stopped working a few years ago largely due to her arthritis (and having young kids at home), but was considered too young to qualify for anything. When she was working she'd come home and just sleep for literally 14 hours then get up the next day.

And the copays are insane. It changes often, right now I think it's $600 a month for Humira. Luckily for us she's been a "loyalty" patient because she's been on it so long or something like that, so Humira will reimburse her for all but $5 of the cost. But if we were to be new to it, we'd be paying it all.

That’s crazy mace!  She’s been thru so much.  I have an autoimmune disorder as well so I truly understand what she suffers with on a daily basis.  And kudos to you for being such a supportive husband.  I wish you all the best.

These diseases aren’t life threatening but the number one cause of death amongst those with autoimmune issues is suicide.  Having a supportive family makes all the difference.  Good for you!

I immediately assumed it was a revenge killing, because the insurer let someone die for profit. I would think this man had a million enemies. Could have also been a political thing. It will probably be really hard to pin down a culprit.

Amazing how they mobilize when the dead person is rich and influential, but are so totally stretched for resources and time when a "normal" gets murdered.

Anyone get POOTWH’s opinion on this? Medicare and Medicaid fraud is a huge business and one the mob, both Russian and old school, participate in. Maybe he knew too much and was going to expose it or wouldn’t play along? Or fucked around with the wrong guy’s wife.

Possible but it doesn't seem like your average disgruntled person could plan a perfect hit and getaway like that. His weapon jammed and he fixed it and fired more like no problem.

That Starbucks could've been a huge mistake (besides the price). If they find that cup, and find him, a DNA match would seal his fate.

All very true, Shecky (and refreshing to be in agreement on a topic here.)
For most of the last 30 years, I have not been able to find a general practitioner that is an MD.  All (6? 7? 8?) have been nurse practitioners.  All have been nice enough people and seem to do what they can, but with everything I've had to deal with (autoimmune disorder, chronic vertigo, skin cancer, a variety of hearing issues, lichen planus, oral lichen planus, arthritis, digestive disorders), I have to see the nurse practitioner simply to get a referral to see a specialist.  It can sometimes take months, sometimes several months.  This has been going on too long.  I've been known from time to time to tell my wife she should take me out to pasture and shoot me.

I'd recommend making the appointment, then seek out a local second, or even third, opinion.
Don’t worry Mace after 1/21 they’ll be doctors knocking at your door you know like the golden age when they would come to your house

yeah...and his wife said he had been receiving threats.

I think a pro would have done a head shot. Clearly the guy was comfortable with the gun but shooting in the back seems like a disgruntled person.

It will be interesting if it turns out the guy sued UH and lost. Not supporting what he did but there are some absolute horror stories out there with insurance companies.

And then yesterday we see the news that BC/BS is only going to pay for a certain amount of anesthesia for surgeries, etc. I'm sure they have some internal reasoning but the optics are bad. What's next? If a surgeon goes in to remove something and sees something else they won't pay for that?

    Fucked up

When the mob is fickle shit is gonna burn...

So dudes gun jammed and he reset and kept firing.  Huge barrel at the end, silencer?  I wondered why he left the shells, now we know.  Depose, Deny, Defend were written on the casings.

I understand the need to make money but having our health insurance as a capitalist venture is nuts.

I'm thinking of the movie Rainmaker here only the CEO got murdered and not sued.

I have a friend who manages a very specialized surgical practice. She told me last night that UHC is the worst when it comes to denials. And it is even worse at the end of the year.

UHC in network was amazing.  Out of network it was terrible. I had them 15 years ago and loved them.

Admittedly, I'm a bit disturbed at how much celebrating I saw about a murder. I don't expect people to mourn or do much more than go about their day. I even accept some "well, insurance companies deny people into their graves" type of comments. But the glee was astonishing to me.

That's a strange take. I haven't read one person sound "gleeful" about this cold-blooded murder. The video footage was so shocking, it's understandable that people are interested in the story. I, for one, have great respect for law enforcement and take pride in how quickly they usually solve these cases. Yesterday, I commented that the killer was foolish to get coffee at Starbucks and if they find his cup, he is cooked. Indeed, today it is being reported that "investigators hope accompanying evidence left behind will help identify him, including a cellphone discovered in an alleyway near the hotel where the shooting occurred as well as a cup in a trash can at a nearby Starbucks.
