4 years to wait for the band to return, for bloody festivals.
let's see if sideshows are announced.. but i doubt it unless bdos sell out immediately.
No sideshows.
Just because they aren't playing at your local pub and you have first pick of tickets, means you whine! They get a full 2hr set! They are playing all over Australia with a bill of other amazing bands! Do you think Europe or South America whine when they play festivals? I doubt it. Go and enjoy the band at a cool festival, or stop whining. You think they should be so privileged that they ask you what style of show they play?!
It is not Whining - it is stating an opinion. BDO is almost the polar opposite of the experience of a regular Pearl Jam show. The BDO stopped being cool many years ago and is now just a massive clusterfuck of a cash grab. The last two I attended were among the worst concert experiences of my life. I once loved the BDO when it was a cool alternative festival - but now it is anything but. Maybe they'll put together a newer cool format and if so, I'll gladly change my opinion, but if it is anything like the last few years - fuck it.
Well said Mr Andrews.0 -

Only dates it could work would be 21st/22nd Jan in Melbourne and 29th in Sydney.
Doubt that will occur though.

The no sideshows is a model both BDO and Soundwave have adopted in the last few years with the headlines to ensure the festival sells out. Looking at the schedule I highly doubt they will vary this.
I have been in the 90's, in the 00's and the last few years (last year working), and it has changed over the years, and I think it has come back to near it's origins. Yeah there is sponsorship and the like (like everywhere), but When Neil young played a few years ago, or Soundgarden, or RHCP's, the people who didn't want to see them went to see other acts, leaving us to have the time of our lives watching our favourite artists! It's delivering older music to younger people. And as someone said above... go later in the day and catch only a few bands. Plus, having seen PJ do Etihad and ANZ Stadiums in 2009 in 40-degree heat and hours of beers in the sun... ain't too different! We aren't the only ones at a PJ show. They are played on classic and modern rock stations, bogans fuckin' love PJ, so they will be there regardless.
PJ are coming to Australia! Fucking awesome! Can't wait to see them at GC, Melb and Syd BDO's! Luckily I will be working so won't have to buy tickets.

But those stereotypical bogans don't dig anything released after Betterman. Saw plenty of it on the 2009 tour, they'd boo, get bored, get agitated, when any non Top40 songs were played.
The best thing about a PJ tour is going to mulitple shows and getting a genuinely different experience each night. I suspect BDO setlists will be pretty stock-standard greatest hits from city to city with only a handful of changes from show to show.0 -

They have never done this at festivals in other parts of the world, even when they play a run of them (Europe, SA). The setlists may have Alive and Betterman in them, but that's good! Who cares?! And again with this elitist shit... it's stadium with tens of thousands of seats... a fan of the band who loves their old shit more than their new shit still deserves to see PJ if they want.
Simple solution is if you don't want to be in a situation, no one is forcing you to be. Don't go. But I will be there bloody loving it! A great band, a great BIG DAY OUT, great other bands.
Have any of you nay-sayers been to the BDO in the last 5 years? Or are just assuming its shitty nowadays? I thoroughly enjoyed last year and thought it was a great and well-behaved crowd. Some dudes had their shirts off and had bad tattoos, but I hardly let that bother me. Everyone was in great spirits, and when the Peppers hit the stage it was electric and collective! I also saw OFF! and Death Grips and The Foals and Against me and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Killers... a great day! And I'm 32.PJ - Sydney 1998; Sydney 2003; Sydney, Melbourne, Newcastle 2006; Melbourne, Sydney 2009; Gold Coast, Melbourne, Sydney 2014.

I'm not buying into the whole 10C v Regular Punter bullshit - we're all people and all have the same rights to enjoy whatever band we choose. So I hope I don't come across that way , it is not my intent. I really hope PJ can gain more younger fans, I spent a lot of my time as a school teacher (many moons ago) introducing them to my students and then taking my stepson to shows (us pictured in my avatar at the Foos) and now my stepson's friends. The first half a dozen songs Marcus learnt on guitar were Pearl Jam songs, his first gig was the 2009 PJ show. I believe a younger audience is essential to the band growing and remaining relevant.
My bitch/gripe/opinion/statement (but definitely not whinge) is that in my experience a Pearl Jam show is a unique event. I was at ME Stadium in Perth, plus Melbourne Etihad and Sydney Football Stadium in 2009 (scored rail in front of Ed each night). I was at Amsterdam 1&2 in 2012, was at MSG and Newark 2010 and LA 3&4 in 2009. I was at Missoula in 2012. As well as all their other Perth shows from the 90s onwards. One way or another I'll get tickets to the two Brooklyn shows. I was at he Global Festival in NYC last year where Neil Young and the Foos kicked arse. So I can't and won't complain about not having my share of incredible shows. Those early Big Day Out festivals were awesome, loads of room to move, great bands, mostly good behaviour in the crowds and a lot of goodwill and consideration between the punters. I have seen other bands I like at both their own headlining shows and also BDO, Summersault, Soundwave etc and always preferred headlining shows to festivals.
My point is that PJ do not need to do the Big Day Out and can draw a BDO size crowd alone. The BDO show I'd end up at is the Perth BDO. That particular event had been mismanaged, is notorious for dickhead behaviour and is now not welcome in many of Perth's venues or by the councils who ultimately sign off on it. Last couple (and yes, not in the last couple of years) was like being in a drug and testosterone fueled gladiator pit. Plenty of fuckwits looking for fights, groping women and spoiling it for everyone. I can physically look after myself against drunken, meth and pill popping idiots who want to cause trouble (loads of them in Perth) but shouldn't have to - and women should not have to put up with sexual harassment. I have contacts (same people who hate working at the BDO for the reasons previously stated) who can ensure I can probably get a great spot, even if I get there 10 minutes before Pearl Jam go on stage (not that this is my intent), so it is not a bitch about having to fight my way to the front or anything like that - it is purely that the particular festival has recently become a no-go area for plenty of people and not the kind of environment that Pearl Jam try to establish at their shows.
I really hope you're right and things are different. Time will tell.Post edited by Paul Andrews on0 -
And who knows, I could be in for a surprise with the lineup and find half a dozen awesome acts I've been really wanting to see play together and all is good. But given the recent Perth BDO lineups and organisation, I remain to be convinced.0

I will end up being okay with it if they can get Compressorhead back to open :corn:"Populated with every reject and cutthroat from Bombay to Calcutta. It's worse than Detroit."0

I agree that a festival gig wouldn't hold a candle to the unique PJ tour gig but at the same time, we need to keep in mind that if the rumors or true, lets be grateful they are touring our shores again. Sometimes we lose sight of the fact that we are pretty damn lucky that we get gigs when American cities with the same populations don't. Has anyone considered the fact that maybe the boys WANT to play the BDO because they never have (apart from Matt with SG) and want to experience something different? Maybe consider the possibility that Matt had a blast last time and let the boys know that.
If you walk in with the mindset that all the fn bogans are going to annoy you, well they will. Walk in with an open mind and let that stuff roll off your back like water on a ducks back.
PS i have been to the BDO on & off the last few years and i've seen some quite 'senior' folk rock their socks off, its not just teeny boppers.1995 • 2006 • 2009 • Adelaide

I agree mate - I think the passionate PJ fans longs to see more than 1 show on the tour and have them all to ourselves - We have probably been spoiled by the greatest band over time and always want the same/similar experience. See a show at a Festival just seems like a meal at Macdonalds, instead of a 500G steak.
I will be going to BDO if they are playing and will enjoy some other bands on the day, but I wish for a sideshow (and I know it won't happen - at least not in Briusbane/Perth/Adelaide)I'll ride the wave where it takes me

Yep. Actually we nearly went to this year's BDO because I wanted to see RHCP. We were renting a house at the Gold Coast about 2 kms away from Parklands but friends were staying with us so couldn't go. I would do Gold Coast, but I am bias, as I will definitely be at that one.
Depends what you like? If you like the beach and stuff like that Gold Coast - and the break between 19 Jan Gold Coast and 26 Jan Sydney 1, is big enough to really hang out on the Gold Coast and Byron Bay and the likes.
But Melbourne is beautiful!!! And it is more "hip" and "cultured".Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure - science.

My deal is as a dual US/NZ citizen I really, really need to see my family there and revisit the things I haven't seen in over 25 years...but I also have some family living in Sydney(and also some friends that are now there on a work assignment). Beach life = yes as I spent 3.5 years in Hawaii....but I am willing to see and travel to anywhere cost permitting."Populated with every reject and cutthroat from Bombay to Calcutta.
