We have a guy at work that has to wash his feet and pray at certain times. He does not understand why people have a problem with that. I tried to explain that we don't do that here..we work at the time we are scheduled to work......while he is praying and washing his feet we are still busting ass doing the work that needs to be done. He does not understand that we need him at the time he is scheduled to help get things done.

If we wanted to live in the middle east we would move there.....and what I don't understand is why they even want to come here?

Are you his boss? If not, then what's your problem? Does he make up the time spent praying later in the day? The again, I don't expect an honest answer from you. No offence.

Oh, and Sharia law isn't creeping into your legal system, regardless of what those wacky internet blogs are telling you.

Great example of normal people doing normal things. Judging by the name of the surgeon who repaired my wife's eye, I'm guessing she comes from an Islamic background. She's a wonderful person and does great work- restoring sight! The Iranian guy who used to run the gas station down the road always had a kind word and often called me "brother"- not because I'm Islamic or pro-terrorist (I'm not) but because I didn't snub him and we were respectful and pleasant with each other.

People who have a fear and/or hatred of others because of the color of their skin, their race or creed or religion would do well to get out more often and meet more people and discover that, for the most part, we're all more similar than different. We all pretty much want the same things.
Your last sentence, YES ad infinitum. And also to mickeyrat & Moonpig.

I've mixed avoidance with observance in this thread so far. So not black and white, and much room for education, if not experience. I love some of the common sense and openminded comments I've read.

(brian, my Persian uncle used to call my father "brother". It's one among the many things I loved about him)

Yes! When some one from another culture calls me "brother" it's great. When my Iranian gas station friend said "brother" to me I knew it was sincere. There was also a sadness about it as if he were saying, "Thank you for not hating me like most everyone else around here seems to".

Thanks! She's doing much better- finally got through the face-down part of recovery and able to get around and do more now. :D

Some items on this list are great, but some you might wish to leave off, Aerial.

You imply that to eat dog is tantamount to sin (I am assuming other animals are fine though?). The US does eat though! In fact, it could be argued that the US almost seems to pride itself on indulgence: evidenced by the 35.7% obesity rate for adults and 16.9% obesity rate for children.

I say 'pride itself on such indulgence' because the rates are predicted to rise to 44% by 2030. This at least gives the appearance that nobody is really too concerned with correcting what some feel is an epidemic.

    Consider the following:

Obesity raises the risk of numerous diseases, from type 2 diabetes to endometrial cancer, meaning more sick people and higher medical costs in the future, the report said.

It projects as many as 7.9 million new cases of diabetes a year, compared with 1.9 million new cases in recent years. There could also be 6.8 million new cases of chronic heart disease and stroke every year, compared with 1.3 million new cases a year now.

The increasing burden of illness will go right to the bottom line, adding $66 billion in annual obesity-related medical costs over and above today's $147 billion to $210 billion. Total U.S. healthcare spending is estimated at $2.7 trillion.

That projection supports a study published earlier this year in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine that found that by 2030, 42 percent of U.S. adults could be obese, adding $550 billion to healthcare costs over that period.

    Ouch.

Not to pile on, but you say your country does not have sex with its children. Numerous stories and headlines would contradict that statement. As well, you suggest US citizens marry the one they love... but a 40-50% divorce rate would suggest this isn't necessarily so. Further, I'm pretty sure there are some ethnic groups that would argue your equal rights statement.

You can tell when a professor is swaying one way or the other if you use your brain (critical thinking skills, college can help with this). Dr. A is quite good at avoiding it, thus making it fair.

Never did I say anything is a sin.... I was implying eating dog is not a part of American culture.....

people are becoming fat and unhealthy because of additive, preservatives, and GMO crops
At least right now we have the right to get fat...

Having sex or marrying children is not part of the American culture. Funny how when Muslims are terrorist this is not true because it is "only the fanatical Muslims" that do this....
but if An American rapes a child(that is what WE call it) then to you, ALL Americans do it....In this country if you get caught doing this you will get jail time ...I think they should get the electric chair but that's another story....
Americans do have the right to marry the person they love....did I say they never fall out of love?

Can I ask again..without accusations.....if people do not want to acclimate to American culture why do you think they come here?
I have always wanted to understand this....
I would never move to a country if I did not agree with there culture....
Example......I have been to the beautiful country of Italy, Naples to be exact. I was not a tourist I went with a friend that has family there. I loved it there. If it was not for the way the men treated the women (there wives) I would have loved to live there..They treat women very mannerly but when you become a wife the story changes.......I would not move there and expect the people to change to my liking.

    Well...

You keep talking about your country being built upon the principles of freedom and just how great this is.

Then you talk about people needing to conform to become a 'typical' American.

If freedom is what you value... then there should not be expectations for someone to forfeit their values in order to fit your picture of what an American should look like.

In some ways I think this is a good point. If I were to move to another country, I would want to learn the language and customs of that country.

But flipping this over, I would like to see the American people in general work on improving our own culture and customs such that we would want others to emulate us in better ways. We could be more equitable than we are. We could be more courteous of others. We could be healthier. We could legalize marijuana. We could reduce poverty and prejudice and stop consuming more than our share of natural resources and energy. We could do more to make restitution to the First Nations people of North America.

And what about the idea that we are the "melting pot"? Or is that an outdated term?

We are a melting pot...We have set a culture.....why is it okay for every country to have a culture except America? People should realize not everything in life is fair, most learn this as children, it's life. We are not all equal, yes it would be nice if we were but what your describing is Paradise on earth. There is no such thing as a set culture. This argument you're making sounds very much like something somebody might have said to justify segregation in the 1950s or slavery in the 1800s. The US like every other nation is constantly changing, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse.

You may not tolerate that immigrants have the right to hold beliefs that are different than your own however it won't stop those individuals from migrating to the USA and leaving their mark on your society. People have doing it for centuries.

I wish it was that way but it never will be.......but America does try...

I beg to differ. Our culture is very fluid and varied (thus the term "melting pot"). The only thing cultural that is truly American is Jazz and Blues. Everything else is borrowed and blended.

It's true, baseball as we know it today is very American but the roots of baseball go back to old French and British games. Jazz and blues are our one true cultural invention (and what a great one it is!)- created by African Americans- a people we and the British enslaved and forced to reside here.

Look, if I was not tolerant I would be blowing things up....... :fp:
