OK, but should we have remained neutral?

Based on events as they occurred, no. Was war the ONLY way to stop the Germans and Japanese?

This partial quote came across my FB feed this morning and I found it relevant and similar to something Cosmo said earlier.

"The sociopaths who run this country realized people work much better when given the "illusion" of freedom rather than outright slavery or an outright dictatorship. Literally the entire system that has been imposed on us by the ruling class reflects this fact. And we have been indoctrinated for many generations to accept it and be participants in it. But not only that, we are the enforcers of it."

To stop them? Yes, probably. Hitler was going to keep going as far as he could. I don't know where the Japanese would have stopped. I do think war was inevitable.

That is not to say, as you suggested earlier, that there were not things the US gov't could and should have done differently. There certainly were.

A new study published in the American Journal of Medicine has revealed a potential benefit from the use of cannabis. The article, entitled “The Impact of Marijuana Use on Glucose, Insulin, and Insulin Resistance among U.S. Adults,” investigated the blood sugar-related effects of cannabis use among participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2005 to 2010.

I am no fan of war, but that seems like a threat to me.

But it can be argued that if we were ever truly neutral then even our merchant ships wouldn't have been in hostile waters. We were intent on protecting our economic interests by protecting trade with our largest economic partners (GB and France) whilst not trading with Germany at all. Germany declard war on the United States right after the U.S. declared war on Japan. I think it might have been on December 8, 1941.
Their reasoning was that attack on U.S. Merchant ships carrying war supplies to Great Britian could now be sunk by German U-Boats as 'acts of War'. Prior to that, those attacks on merchant ships would be considered acts of Piracy. The idea was to starve, then invade/occupy Great Britian.
    ...
Finally, the U.S. played a large role in the defeat of Germany during WWII... but, had Hitler not decided to open the Eastern Front, they would have been a more formidible force on the Western Front and possibly may have been able to repel the Allied Forces from Normandy in 1944.

Very true. I was thinking about how the US maintained 'neutrality' from 1939 until the attack at Pearl Harbor even though we had merchant ships in hostile shipping lanes to help out the Allies which also helped us out especially after the war.

What of Americans who worship a different God than did Mr. Jefferson? What of Americans who worship no God at all?

The god of our forefathers is not the god that fundamentalists worship today. Many of our founding fathers were either not religious, Ben Franklin was a deist, or were religious in name only, i.e., regular church attendance as a function of cultural expectations, like Thomas Jefferson. The only rewriting of history occurs by those who don't understand the religious and cultural times of the founding fathers. A good book on this very subject is "Faith of the Founding Fathers" by David Holmes.

    http://www.amazon.com/Faiths-Founding-Fathers-David-Holmes/dp/0195300920

He does a fantastic job of explaining how the fundamentalist religions of this era are far different than the religous beliefs of people today espcially since many of the Protestant denominations that many follow today didn't even exist during this time.
