  • i just wanted to reiterate what my beliefs are. i believe that most of you anti gun people could be handed a piece of paper listing all the numbers and causes of death for 2011, and you would bust out your highlighter and select a group of people. you would say these lives should have been saved, they could have been prevented we need to do something about this. all these other people that died fall into the category of they did it to themselves, fall into some sort of cost benefit ratio, or shit happens that's life. and who is this group of people you selected to still be worthy of life, people killed by guns. and that's great, people getting killed by guns is terrible.
me however, i would look at that list and say which of these deaths could have been prevented? well kids getting mowed down by guns would still be alive if there were no guns. kids getting mangled in car wrecks would still be alive if there were no cars, kids that overdosed on alcohol would still be alive if there was no alcohol, and the list goes on and on. all lives are important and precious to me. and if their death could be prevented, how could you be against preventing it? so for me when you guys talk about saving lives, i don't believe your goal is to save lives. i think saving lives is a convenient byproduct of your ultimate goal. which is to have guns banned.
    just my opinion.
if you think what I believe is stupid, bizarre, ridiculous or outrageous.....it's ok, I think I had a brain tumor when I wrote that.
  • if you call what i believe idiotic, then you're calling be an idiot, and since you just did it again. i guess i repeat....i'm not an idiot because i don't believe what you believe.

Nobody called anyone an idiot. A comparison was called idiotic.

Sesame Street used to have that great segment: "One of these things... isn't like the others":

If one lumps guns in with other 'major killers' such as pools, tobacco, and cars... can they expect to be taken seriously? And just because someoen has an opinion... does that mean it has to be respected no matter what?

Nothing wrong with calling a spade a spade.

You are not getting it. And it's so simple.

People are willing to take their chances driving in automobiles in which their soul purpose is to transport people. A measured risk.

People don't want to take chances with guns in which their sole purpose is to kill. What's the upside other than some people get to use their cool guns at the dump shooting pop cans and other stuff?

You are trying to feed people a plate of shit. People don't have to eat it. Sorry man, but your comparison lacks substance. It doesn't work to support what you are trying to say.

  • all i'm trying to say is that i think all life is valuable and worth saving not just people killed by guns. that's it.

You are not going to get an argument from me on this statement.

You can choke on a hotdog. I'll admit that anything can be dangerous; however, once something has been determined as consistently dangerous... measures are taken to safeguard the public with regards to the inherent dangers.

The auto industry has constantly taken safety measures to try and improve the automobiles' safety standards. Driving laws have continually been revamped to address public safety. Driver awareness has been a major theme for society.

Pools carry by-laws in our province. For example, gated 4 foot fences must surround pools.

Guns have gone the opposite direction. They have become more deadly and more efficient killing machines. The gun industry and gun supporters have not demanded safer weapons or use. Instead, they have encouraged and supported more dangerous design and... people are saying enough. It's enough now.

I think it would be far easier to accomplish banning all guns for citizens to own if
it was a small country the size of one or two of our states.
I do not see that happening here ever, at least not in my lifetime, 20 more years.
Well unless it is forced upon and not freely chosen by the people
which is why some choose to own. It is our freedom. It is not our freedom to kill
but it is our freedom to own a gun. We are the land of the free.
    We are not killers.

what is your definition of freedom? I don't see America been move free than many other countries?

its so bizarre to me that the country who doesn't want people to infringe on their personal freedom is the same country who tells other countries what weapon they can have.

    Touché!
  • what's bizarre to me is that the supposedly, most free or freest however you say it, country in the world, is responsible for the highest prison population in the world.

From my point of view, this might be a big part of the problem. I would even go as far to say that to many of you are being egoistic and fight for your rights and forget about your responsibilities.

Haven't scanned through this thread, but I'm amazed at how many people support putting guns in teachers hands or having armed guards on school premises. I'm not some lefty gun hater, but this is unquestionably not the answer.

+1 There's always an agenda, usually not that well hidden. The funny part is, the people that generally support that are the ones that say "we have to keep guns to protect ourselves from a tyrannical government".

True even trained NYC police officers in Times Square couldn't shoot straight and hit 9 innocent bystanders in a chase and shoot. So why would we think teachers in schools would eliminate an intruder without his or her students getting shot or some other innocent bystander?????

  • yeah as a gun owner i'm not a fan of that idea either. on the local news last night they were talking about a local gun shop giving free carry conceal and pistol training to teachers. and also, which i didn't know, that there is already a school or county in texas that allows teachers to carry guns on campus. harrold county i think?

Okay.No way would I put a gun in teachers' hands. One armed guard or policeman at a school will do a lot better than none. It's a numbers game. This gunman killed himself when police moved in.Who knows how many kids would have died if it took longer for police to arrive. If there is someone on the premises who could have taken him out sooner, possibly less lives would have been lost.5-10 dead. Better than 27.What would be wrong with this?Kids would be scared of the policeman?Police are at schools all the time.Telling kids about bike safety and being aware of strangers, etc. There are police/guards at schools even now I am sure. Will this happen in all schools-no way.But I would not be afraid of sending my kids to schools that had one armed policeman.
These mass shootings are rare.Better chance of getting hit by lightning. But they are so shocking and violent in scope that people are galvanized by it.There really is no one answer.Mental health diagnosis/treatment has to be looked at also.
One thing I am certain of.The victims at Sandy Hook will not have died in vain. This is the start of meaningful action to try and remove assault weapons from the mainstream public. But,it will take years and years.

    another thing to consider.

say you have one or two gunmen enter a school and you have multiple armed teachers. all have their guns drawn and are looking for each other. the cops show up. how are the cops going to know who the gunmen are if there are multiple people with guns? it the gunmen are dressed black like police or swat officers, might that make the teachers mistakenly fire at police causing police to fire back???

seems to me the potential exists for armed teachers to be shot by police by mistake. not to mention, teachers firing at gunmen and potentially missing and hitting kids.

i think it is a bad idea to have more guns, becaue it opens it up to being a situation like the gunfight at the OK corral...

NO GUNS FOR TEACHERS.(I'm sure their union wouldn't allow it.) :?
Hey,maybe the killers would dress up as teachers or cops then nobody would know who is who.

i dont like the idea of armed people at schools
if this happens ,my opinion is NO WAY to be the teachers but the armed to be police officer..
kids cant see the guns, officer must hide them, and i prefer to be women and motner as well..must be friendly face to kids,so better the officers be woman and mother..
+to get some training about kids and their psychology

I don't know about Greece, but where I come from, police are a friendly face for kids.
Hide the guns? And make it more difficult to remove them if needed.
I would prefer policemen to offer protection.
I can tell we will never see eye to eye on many subjects.
