An unnamed AP source said that .223 rounds were involved.

    That's an assault rifle round.
  • Just saw this on twitter from someone:

"There are parents in Connecticut who are going home to hidden Christmas presents for children who are dead."

I'm a 38 year old man (and father) who doesn't cry often... reading that statement made me cry at my desk at work.

    I'm at a loss...

The fact that the word Another is in the thread title is absolutely beyond heartbreaking.

    :( ....

This news story is really the saddest thing I think I've ever heard. I feel numb thinking about it and wondering what its going to take to stop this kind of thing. Barbed wire fences around schools with metal detectors and armed guards?

Its absolutely sickening that kids, little children, the most innocent of all, have to endure this shit. Fuckin a.

Oh my God, this is just AWFUL. :( :( :( I cannot begin to imagine what the parents of the missing or dead children are going through (and even just any parent of any kid at the school, not to mention the families of the staff) - my heart really goes out to all of them. What a horror.

It seems to early to turn this into a debate - that should come when we know more about what's happened and what's up with the shooter. Also, this is not an American symptom. These incidents happen in Europe and China too (surprisingly often).

There are just so many things wrong with our society that brings us to the point of people being so screwed up that they kill children. Children! It's time we start to address some of the very real problems in our country instead of continuing to sweep them under the rug. All of these issues that so many refuse to compromise upon are at the expense of our children. Sick, disgusted, and at a loss about what to do and where to go from here :(
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...

    IMHO:

We, as a society, need to treat each other better, because you never know what may drive someone to snap. The ills of our society should not be ignored, because they will eventually effect us all.

We need more stringent gun laws. When the constitution was written, I doubt the framers of the constitution envisioned how low we could possibly sink as a society.

Did the framers think we needed arms to protect us against foreign invaders (which was appropriate at the time), or thieves who may try to steal someone's plow?

We need to pay more attention to everyones' mental health.

I just want to run to the schools and get my kids and hug them tight. My thoughts and prayers for the families that are going through this.

Something must be done about gun availability and violence. What will the last straw be? How far does this have to go? I'm sick and angry and sad. That's not enough.

how about requiring all parents to take anti-depressant drugs and having armed federal marshalls in every classroom... im sure we can figure out a way to administer the drugs like we administer flu shots (free on every corner) since the flu shots rid of us the flu

Exactly. When I have symptom for an illness I take some medication. If guns are the symptoms for our mass violence then its time for our country to take our meds.

Look I don't know to many people who out and out want to ban guns but if this keeps up and the NRA keeps being defensive about it, that is where we will end up eventually.

I don't think there is any explanation for stuff like this. We appear to be pretty numb to this stuff at this point. So much daily killing and anger blasting us in the face from behind our keyboards. So much hatred of things we don't understand. So many guns. So many wars. Humans never seem to change.

I don't usually wax political here, but we need some real leaders not sponsored by Pepsi or Nike.

EDIT: To clarify - one of the parents of one of the shooters found dead this morning in NJ
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.
