I guess in a way, absolute truths (as opposed to relative), by removing any subjective element, have been agreed upon within a certain context. These truths can be demonstrated to be valid time and time again (again within the context and our knowledge). So yes, they exist.

Even certain things that can be measured/demonstrated have too many subjective elements to it to be able to have it as 'truth'. Very basic example is pain. Pain is truth - no doubt - measurable/demonstrable. I tell someone that getting a tattoo doesn't hurt. I been though it several times, no pain - my truth. That person gets a tattoo - same tattoo, same area of the body, same tattoo artist - it hurts like hell - pain. Their truth. Even something demonstrable becomes relative and an 'individual truth'.
    ...
Yes. Truths are relative... like my original example of the setting Sun, it is based upon perception by the individual.
As for tattoos... the truth is tattooing is a process in which the skin in broken by a needle in order to insert tincture beneath the surface. The pain threshold is based purely on the individual. Me, for example, I'm a total wuss when it comes to needles and shit.... which explains my lack of tattoos.

Exactly - thus pain, whilst demonstrable is not absolute but relative.

I believe we CAN. We just have to sort through the tons and tons of bullshit that is thrown into our paths to find it.
It has been mentioned that I am 'building walls'... which is true... i build walls to keep out the same old bullshit I've been hearing from different people my entire life. The walls are not there restricting my freedom of passionate thought or emotion... they are there to keep the same old, same old bullshit I've heard a million times before from getting in my way.

    An exercise in logic:
We've all heard the story of the 'Lady or the Lion', right?
    if not...
You are trapped in a room.
There are 2 identical looking doors.
Behind one door is a beautiful woman (or man, your preference).
Behind the other is a ferocious, hungry lion that sees you a a chili burger.
Guarding each door is an armed guard.
One guard always tells the truth.
    The other guard always lies.
You have no idea which guard is which.
You may ask one guard one question.
    ...
How do you get the lady and not end up Meow-mix?
    ...
There is a logical answer that will lead you to the correct door... no matter what.
Hint: It uses a double negative.
    ...
Also.. think about it and give it a shot before you Google the answer.
No one ever gets it... I got this thing decades ago and had to have it explained to me because I couldn't figure it out.

I see now how words and their meanings have become so distorted. How can there even be 5 pages on one word? Truth, what does it mean? It was to long and I don't have the time to read all of the post. I was wondering did anyone agree on the meaning?
Anyone have kids? When you ask your child a question you want he/she to tell you the truth. That is what truth is. :P

why do we as humans even think there is there is an absolute truth? being egocentric as we are, why cant it be simpy accepted that all truths are relative and subject to change? and therefore there is no such thing as absolute truth or 'the' truth.

Because we KNOW of certain absolute truths... such as, 'We are going to die someday'.
That is an absolute and there is no counter arguement to that. We are not all going to die on the same day... but, eventually, we will all become dead. We can argue about the date or the method of our deaths... but, we cannot, as living human beings, escape the fact that we are mortal.
If we know certain absolutes exist, then, the possibility of other absolutes exist... right?

OK.. I think I remember this one.

Ask man in front of 'Hunk of a man' door - 'If I asked the other guard, would he say he has the hunk behind his door?

    Then choose the opposite.

So, say you asked Hunk door and this has the liar - his response would be yes (because liar guard knows he has the hunk so he lies about truth guard's response)
If it were truth guard, his response would be yes as well (because he knows liar guard has the hunk but he is truthful about liar's intentions).

I'm pretty damned sure it's right (did see Labyrinth!) but can't explain it on a post - it's fine in my head!

I'm always amazed by people who can think this well in their head about abstract thoughts. I'm more of a "thinking in pictures" kind of person so thank you for sparing me hours of tortuous thinking!

But then I also have to ask... is it true?

I speak of individual life experiences that bring each their truth.
You say someone's truth is not truth unless it is fact. This is untrue.
Are you a truth seeker or a fact seeker? I have a feeling it is the latter.
It is known not all facts are proven trustworthy and some are downright disproven over time
    what then?
Yet when one lives an experience from there comes truth.
Truth seekers are willing to live an experience and the truth is theirs alone.
Again do you want proof to the afterlife? or do you want to experience it?
Is is not in dying that we experience the afterlife it is in the proof we can live here.
    ...
Again.. RELATIVE Truths... not ABSOLUTE Truths.
Your life experiences are relative to you... not to me or anyone else. What you believe to be true... isn't always the truth, even though you really, REALLY believe it is true.
And yes... i am looking for the truth... not your truth... THE truth.
And a known truth to me, based upon the factual data you have provided in your many, many post on the subject... sorry, but I'm am not going to find any truths from you. Lots of truthiness (yes, it's a real word, look it up)... but, no truths.
    Will you recognize THE truth?

I thought most here including me said truth is relative.

But you know if one remains cynical and skeptical it's pretty hard to recognize
THE truth when it finds it's way to you.
Perhaps it already has and you have dismissed it as bullshit ... too bad for THE truth
don't fret it will be around again.

No. Re-read it... people are saying that some truths are relative and acknowledge that absolute truths exist.
    ...
Just because a child, for example, really believes the lies of the parent that Santa Claus exists... doesn't mean Santa Claus truely exists, right? The child's relative truth is not the absolute truth because it is relative to the individual child, not to the world of reality.
    ...
And trust me... i'll know the truth when I find it... it will be the one that does not reek of bullshit.
