Of The Girl - Wembley, London, May 29, 2000.

being bitter and mean-spirited, immediately after the "wow! i can't believe i'm finally seeing Pearl Jam", i have to confess that i did fleetingly think something along the lines of "damn, it's not Release or Long Road"...! :o
Oh yeah? Well, I've had about enough of morons and halfwits, dolts, dunces, dullards and dumbbells - and you chowderhead yokel, you blithering hayseed, you - you've had enough of me?

  • Better Man, in Madrid, Thursday 9th September, 2006. I needed to pee as soon as MMJ left the stage, but me and my Dad (yeah, 19 at the time and my Dad took me to Madrid to see Pearl Jam. Lucky bugger, eh? I did pay for the tix mind. Best gig buddy ever, my old man, so all's fair for the amount he's bought me) are about 12 rows back, so we'll be damned if we're moving.

So, on they come, everyone is *slightly* excited. And Ed starts with that familiar, gorgeous sound... Better Man.

A massive hug with my Dad as the guitars crash in, and then we're away, me, Dad, every Spaniard, European, American, Australian, whoever, in the joint, and it's magical. Me and my Dad got separated, which tempered it a little bit, but I've never jumped and vaulted so much in a crowd before or since. First time I've really seen absolutely everyone around me going INSANE for a band. And it ruled.

That and Another Brick In The Wall, Little Wing, a storming RvM, a rockin' Grievance (one of my all time faves) and a sumptuous Severed Hand... Safe to say my little mind was blown.

Wembley will struggle to top it.

    Peace and love :)

  • long road...uniondale 2003. it was most fitting as it was truly the song that made me fall in love with pearl jam. yes, very late bloomer. after 09/11 there was the tribute to hereos thing on tv, wasn't watching it and just happened to turn on the tv and catch a bit and hubby and i started watching. believe it or not, i didn't even know what ed looked like before then - no cable/mtv....so yea. it was beyond touching to watch him, mike and neil young play that gorgeous tune after such a tragedy right in my backyard.....absolute chills. so then, for my first concert hearing THAT song open...perfection.

My 1st pearl jam song was the long road in Sydney 2003. Ive been a big fan of pj since i was about 10 so this was my 1st concert, i think i was 17, and it was great. Saw them a few days later, they opened with cant keep. But then in their 1st Sydney show in November 06 they opened with release which was mind blowing, And their 3rd sydney show they opened with betterman. The 1st song of every concert is something special. My favourite would probably have to be release, followed close behind by betterman.

Ps 4 yrs 2day since i saw them in their 3rd sydney show in 03. Valentines day, couldnt of spent it a better way.

    Take care........

    Release.
    09/16/98.
Perfect alcohol buzz (sixer of Labatt Ice).
Right amount of THC (thanks to random couple I met in the parking lot for that).
The opening chords begin to play. Heart skips a beat.
    EVERYBODY SINGS ALONG.... "OOOOOHHHHH...."
"I'll RIDE THE WAVE, WHERE IT TAKES MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!
I'LL HOLD THE PAIN, RELEASE MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!"
    Heaven.
I'm still not sure it was real.

  • Whatever they played first at the Astoria...may have been Worldwide Suicide. I just remember getting tugged under the crowd and swaying lots. Fun stuff. May or may not have been due to the many beers I drank in nervous excitement. It was ARGH amazing nontheless.

My first opener was RVM, Murfreesboro TN in 1994 When i was 15. They turned off the lights and played the first minute in the dark. That was pretty sweet. They closed with Release that day so i still think its a better closer than an opener but anytime is good time if you think about it. :)

Long Road, I was at the gig with three guys all called Richard and I remember looking around at them in a state of bliss and amazement at being there, hearing the song, seeing the band and saying 'Rich, this is it, this is me' it didn't matter which one heard seems they were all called the same thing. I am not sure if any of them heard, they all had the same look on their faces.
