lots of great posts. thank you fellow pearl jam-ers. y'all kick some ass!
safety, safety, & more & more safety.
and that is exactly what guns deserve & must have otherwise the outcome is quite negative. my brothers and i never ever had toy guns. we never had had one single fake ass gun unless we made it ourselves out of wood and throwing stars out of can lids. haha. (tin snips is all ya need)
anyway...
i am the oldest so i was the first to go along hunting with pops & grandpa. this was done before i could forn full sentences. dad's finger had my hand wrapped around it. i'm fucking young, ok! in 2nd or 3rd grade i got a 20 guage single shot shotgun. hunting was not like you'd think it was. the barrel was broke open and the shells in my pocket. if i saw something i had to place a shotgun shell into the gun then fire. this is how it was for one - two hunting seasons. the next hunting season i could have the shell in the barrel but the barrel was not closed. this was like this for several seasons. finally years/seasons later i could have shell in the barrel and have barrel closed shut.
dad constantly asking me/telling me... is it cocked? is it cocked? is it cocked? is the fucking hammer cocked?
when i graduated to a pump shotgun (held 6 rounds including one in the chamber) dad constantly was telling/asking me... is the safety on? is the safety on? is the safety on? is the fucking safety on?
hey, chad, is the gosh darn safety on? (he used the god damn word instead of gosh darn)
all this instilled into me on repeat so much it is incredible. all that and more. the most important thing... always point guns away from people. the ground, the sky, anywhere but in the direction of another.
my grandpa harold would put a boot up my ass if i even for one second fucked around like a moron while messin with guns.
why can't everyone be taught this kinda stuff?
so now when i handle guns i know exactly what i am doing and check the safety and hammer @ a constant out of habit. the gun is never pointed in the direction of anyone, not ever. everything is slowed down and thought out and fulla safety techniques
i haven't hunted in 20 years. today i do not own a gun and haven't in at least 10 years.
I would like to have a beer with your forefathers. Excellent examples of how to teach gun safety to kids.
Looks like these folks need a Grandpa Harold in the mix; Dad's about to turn that little boy into a castrato!
Not a fan of how that kid on the far right is holding that rifle. Is the muzzle pointed straight up at his face?
Overall I don't find the picture creepy per se, though I don't think it serves the pro-gun purpose to aggrandize gun ownership. "Hey look at me, I have guns, I'm tough" is a childish attitude that has nothing to do with the 2nd Amendment.
Does this count?: In high school a couple of buddies of mine and I clamped a section of steel pipe to a saw horse, stuffed gun powder in one end and nails and glass shards in the other and blasted them into a sheet of plywood. Should we have ended up maimed or dead thus fulfilling the laws of natural selection? Probably. Some of us idiots are just lucky to be here.
Oh man the dumb things we all did as kids, especially those of us that didn't grow up in an urban environment. I suppose you cityslicker kids had your own ways of getting into trouble though, eh? :nono:
I shutter to think how many times I would have made headlines in today's media. Ahh, the good 'ol days when pipebombs were only used to blow up pumpkins and mailboxes.

There's a problem with pretty much everyone in that pic - grandma's on the left is pointing at grandma on the right; little girl looks like in addition to the rifle, she's got a handgun pointed at dad intent on keeping the little dude's voice high-pitched; great-grandma in the middle is pointed toward her jaw/the dude behind her.

I don't mean to evade your questions, Chadwick and apologize for my previous answer being a little off center (though it is a good story) but I feel compelled to answer your question with a question:
If gun owners are so afraid of having guns banned and/or taken away, why are they so quick to flagrantly admit to owning them or post pictures of themselves or their families with guns on the internet? This seems like a poor choice. If a person is focused on gun safety and is self aware enough to be responsible with something as dangerous as a gun I would think they would be discrete about it. I'm against guns because too many gun owners are irresponsible. If all the gun owners in the world were responsible and safe AND discrete about it, we wouldn't be having gun related discussions in the first place- or at the very least we would only be talking about flagrant violators. And I probably would be nearly concerned about those who do own guns. Just keep them out of my face- for God's sake... please.

This is a loaded statement (haha).
You seem to be under the false assumption that all gun owners are also dicks.

No, not at all my friend. Some of my closest friends and family members are gun owners. They just don't advertise the fact.

If all the gun owners in the world were responsible and safe AND discrete about it,....
they'd be facing concealed weapon charges
The people I referred to above are in no danger of that happening. It's not a matter on concealing the weapons- it's a matter of being discrete about owning them.

And how! There is a loaded .44 Ruger Redhawk in reach of my bed... I don't have kids or visitors.
Armed and dangerous and a little crazy and I still think gun control laws in this country are a fucking joke...
our house when us kids were growing up was like this. some of y'all know the story already. dad worked for the state of iowa @ the maximum security penitentiary in ft. madison. starting in 1971 - his death in 2002. his & his family's lives were threatened pretty much on a constant. some inmates were serious as shit while others were all talk and no action. dad always invited them to come out and play. every once in a while one would actually try and make his way out to our place. (one even escaped one evening just to kill us kids and mom)
in the 70's & 80's dad would come crawling home after work almost daily due to being kicked the shit out of. as i look back on these events i am amazed by our father and the incredible amount of bravery he had... combined with stupidity of course.
so yes some folks deal with guns/loaded guns around the home (with children) better than others. why? because mom & dad communicated with us and we knew what was going on.
yes gun control laws in this country are a comedy act

I'm pro-gun and I also agree the laws are a joke.
I'll I have to do is take a stroll through the neighborhood and observe the people around me to see we need better regulation. Newsflash: Most adults are not very smart or responsible. Hell, I'm scared that half the people out there can buy a box of kitchen matches without having a license, less yet a .357 Magnum. :?
1. have you ever owned a gun?
No, but I will when my father dies unless I sell them. He has a shotgun and Winchester 30-30
2. have you ever picked a gun up?
Yes
3. have you ever fired a gun?
Yes. Killed a snake with the shotgun at my parent's lake house. I've also shot skeet with it but that was a long time ago. I fired a hand gun at a range once several years ago. A friend took me. I've never hunted with them.
4. do you know how to load & unload most guns?
The two I mentioned above - yes.

Used to love shooting skeet as a kid. Wasn't half bad at it for a 10 year old, either.
yeah i was gonna say,,,, shootin a snake  ........... god dammit, man!
snakes are my dearest friends in the critter kingdom. i've talked reptiles on here till i was blue in the face then went and puked up my breakfast, what with all the snake murdering and whatnot

Swap hawk with any animal, especially snakes, and I'm with ya' Mr Jeffers.
Sorry about the snake. But it was a huge water moccasin after all.
You probably also won't like the fact that dad killed some copperheads a couple of weeks ago that were hiding under a brush pile next to the lake house.
He used a hoe though, not a gun. I am not sure if that mattered to the snakes or not.
Yes to all four questions.
I have many guns. They are very secure and safe.
I used to hunt but dont like killing animals unless it was necessary to survive.
I was raised with them in my home as a child. Taught to respect them and understand what they do and how to handle them.
People who dont respect them are the ones who normally have accidents.
Guns dont kill people. Do spoons make people fat?

1. have you ever owned a gun?
yes-I own a Mossberg shotgun. A homeowner's special... It isn't supposed to penetrate 2 sheets of drywall and it probably wouldn't kill anyone unless I hit a main artery. (just what I was looking for when I purchased it.)
I bought it for personal security only... every 4th or 5th weekend during the summer I go up to Bumbletown, WI to mow the grass at the family cabin. We've been robbed twice. I move the car around in the driveway and I close the blinds at night but for a long time, I couldn't sleep there. It got to the point where I was taking ambien and I didn't like that AT ALL. Now, I load up the shotgun and prop it up next to my bed and sleep like a baby.
2. have you ever picked a gun up?
yes-shotguns, rifles and handguns. My mom is from NE Wisconsin and deer hunting is a part of life there. I grew up with guns.
3. have you ever fired a gun?
yes- my gun, my brother's handguns, his BIL's glock and my uncle's shotgun. I've never shot a rifle although I have held them...the power behind them freaks me out a bit.
4. do you know how to load & unload most guns?
no. I know how to load and unload the guns I've fired and that's it.

Very true. The latest data only has the number at like 97.83%.
