simple questions...

1. have you ever owned a gun?
2. have you ever picked a gun up?
3. have you ever fired a gun?
4. do you know how to load & unload most guns?

yes or no answers and maybe short descriptions will do fine, thank you.

these things i learned at an early age. my family hunted when i was a kid. i learned gun safety from my grandfather and dad. grandpa (dad's dad) was a WWII army veteran who fought in the south pacific.

i think many believe a gun & bullets lying in the closet is insane and only asking for death and in a hurry. when in fact this is not the truth by any stretch of the imagination. safety, safety, safety.

after my swim i'll add a few more details. enjoy your days, fine people!

    Good simple questions Chad...

    1. No, not yet but that target shooting 22 caliber smallbore rifle is coming in the future.

    2. Many times all kinds auto and semi handguns, rifles and machine guns.

    3. Same as above ^^^^

    4. Same as above ^^^^ YES

I once had a softball friend who was and is a DC cop (he had just joined the force at the time) hand me his service glock and thought that he had cleared the weapon. I was handling it just to see how it felt, aimed and sighted it then I checked it. To my surprise a round was still chambered and i told him, he was so shocked and surprised he missed that. He apologized...I told him no one got hurt THIS time but we MUST always be safety conscious when handling ALL guns.

I'm going snorkling with my daughter today and tomorrow down at Boynton Beach apparently they are some beautiful reefs and fish to see there.

    Peace people.

    1. have you ever owned a gun?
Yes, an old 22 long gun that my father had when he was young and wanted my son to have. I guess it was still in working condition but personally I never shot it.

    2. have you ever picked a gun up?
    yes
i don't like the feel of it, not really a fan of guns

    3. have you ever fired a gun?
yes, when i was much younger, shooting cans in the woods with my older cousins (don't think we were supposed to be doing that) ....can't remember if i actually hit anything

    4. do you know how to load & unload most guns?
    no, not really

can't say that i have any interest in guns. they scare me...a lot. i would not own one or have one in the house and I'll tell you why...... i don't believe that i would shoot anyone, unless they were killing me or my family...if there was any other reason, like protecting property, no i would never shoot at a person, hence becoming vulnerable and there is a great chance that the "criminal" would take the gun from me and shoot me instead.

Does this count?: In high school a couple of buddies of mine and I clamped a section of steel pipe to a saw horse, stuffed gun powder in one end and nails and glass shards in the other and blasted them into a sheet of plywood. Should we have ended up maimed or dead thus fulfilling the laws of natural selection? Probably. Some of us idiots are just lucky to be here.

I learned at a very young age... got my hunters safety, of course, when I was 12... fired my first .22 at 8 or 9.

Safety is key, always has been. The guns are always unloaded and locked in one of two safes while not in use. Ammunition is kept in two separate locations. They are never opened unless dad is showing me his recent purchase or we are going to the range.

    YES  too funny.

My brief time in the military I had the advantage to shoot varities of guns. I would never keep a gun now at home with all these children at home. When I do get my target rifle it will be kept at the gun club. The ONLY thrill i get from shooting a rifle is working the methods of breathing, sighting the target. calming my heartbeat/rate and the technique of squeezing the trigger then hitting the bulleye in all 3 position..standing, kneeling and prone in competion and practice. Hitting a bulleyes is similiar to bowling a strike just not as dangerous.

    1. No, aside from the potato canon I made when I was a teenager, of course.
    2. Yes, probably a variety of 4-5 different kinds.
    3. Yes, a .38 handgun, a .22 rifle, and a shotgun.
    4. Used to, but not well enough to call myself knowledgeable these days.

My grandfather was a cop and showed me his gun a few times. He talked about taking me to the range, but it never happened. He explained that he kept it away locked up for safety.

Gun safety was something that was never around in the other few encounters I had with guns. In fact, one of the first encounters was a few days after we heard houses were being robbed in our area of Gainesville Florida, my roommate wanted everyone to know how his shotgun worked. He kept in disassembled for safety reasons. This fella also was very knowledgeable about shotguns -- won several shooting competitions, and later went on to become a cop. He was thorough and showed us how to assemble it, load it, and unload it. The damned thing went off when he was removing rounds. He narrowly missed my head and blew a hole in the ceiling, clean out the roof too.

I also had a chance to learn through friends who were shooting in the woods of North Carolina, but the whole thing made me uneasy. I was also at a friends house when he took out what looked like an uzi and was showing some other guys...I left immediately.

    Have owned a gun (410 shotgun, .22, and 30-06).
Obviously have picked them up- have handled handguns as well.
    Have fired them several times.
I know gun safety (from storage and maintenance to transportation to usage).

    * Have lost some hearing in my right ear as a result of inadequate hearing protection while shooting rifles.

    * At an earlier age was an avid outdoorsman who lost enthusiasm for hunting and fishing.

    * Have not introduced my children to firearms, but plan on doing so at a range for the sake of knowledge.

lots of great posts. thank you fellow pearl jam-ers. y'all kick some ass!

safety, safety, & more & more safety.
and that is exactly what guns deserve & must have otherwise the outcome is quite negative. my brothers and i never ever had toy guns. we never had had one single fake ass gun unless we made it ourselves out of wood and throwing stars out of can lids. haha. (tin snips is all ya need)

    anyway...

i am the oldest so i was the first to go along hunting with pops & grandpa. this was done before i could forn full sentences. dad's finger had my hand wrapped around it. i'm fucking young, ok! in 2nd or 3rd grade i got a 20 guage single shot shotgun. hunting was not like you'd think it was. the barrel was broke open and the shells in my pocket. if i saw something i had to place a shotgun shell into the gun then fire. this is how it was for one - two hunting seasons. the next hunting season i could have the shell in the barrel but the barrel was not closed. this was like this for several seasons. finally years/seasons later i could have shell in the barrel and have barrel closed shut.

dad constantly asking me/telling me... is it cocked? is it cocked? is it cocked? is the fucking hammer cocked?
when i graduated to a pump shotgun (held 6 rounds including one in the chamber) dad constantly was telling/asking me... is the safety on? is the safety on? is the safety on? is the fucking safety on?

hey, chad, is the gosh darn safety on? (he used the god damn word instead of gosh darn)

all this instilled into me on repeat so much it is incredible. all that and more. the most important thing... always point guns away from people. the ground, the sky, anywhere but in the direction of another.
my grandpa harold would put a boot up my ass if i even for one second fucked around like a moron while messin with guns.

why can't everyone be taught this kinda stuff?
so now when i handle guns i know exactly what i am doing and check the safety and hammer @ a constant out of habit. the gun is never pointed in the direction of anyone, not ever. everything is slowed down and thought out and fulla safety techniques

i haven't hunted in 20 years. today i do not own a gun and haven't in at least 10 years.

OUTSTANDING! Awesome lessons to be learned by all. I especially like the part about everything being slowed down. It's always a great thought, concept or idea to slow things down when handling a gun,,,,never a good idea to handle a gun in a rush even in an emergency situation.

Almost the same in competition shooting I slow things down to shooting in between heart beats back 32 years ago. When i go shoot again I'll lucky JUST to hear my heart beat. :D

    Good stuff Chadwick.

    1. no not personally, but my dad had a couple of shotguns and a rifle.

2, yes, quite a few types. even unloaded they make me feel uneasy. i think it is the part that in the back of my mind tells me that i am immediately the most powerful person in that room since i have the gun, and i do not like feeling that way.

    3. yes, i have shot rifles, shotguns, a glock, a mac 10, and an ar-15. again, i just do not feel comfortable handling them, especially when loaded.

    4. i can load and unload the ones that i have fired. i have forgotten to take the round out of the chamber of the glock before though...

and yes i agree with the .22 rifle target practicing bit. that is a fun time. and .22 shells are soo cheap you can go through hundreds of 'em and barely spend any money. however, the .22 is the most common gun used in murders. :(
