That is the whole point. Its a perfectly valid argument. Unless you are only talking about history of the world since the 1800's or the invention of MTV.

Gates did some good stuff...Bob Ross is also known worldwide for his 28 minute oil paintings!

...and with this...I officially have no idea what you're talking about? :?

When a major crisis hits the World...what's the first question....what's the Americans going to do?

I'd say its our country's problem when U.S. manufacturers take jobs overseas so they can exploit working conditions in the Third World rather than keep their factories open in the good old US of A. I'd rather buy those "cheap products" that were made here, knowing that it was keeping other Americans employed. You'll keep a lot more US children in well-equipped schools if their parents have jobs.

And the work forces in this country won't work for those wages to create those products at the price point that the American public will pay. Would you pay $300 for those Nikes you own? Probably not. Let someone else do it if they are willing.

I consider it narcissism and a lack of humbleness, maybe even simple grace, when anyone insinuates (or comes right out and says) that this - or any other country for that matter - "dominates".

What does that even mean? Dominates how? What's the worth of some headlines that many don't give a shit about anyway? Have you seen OUR headlines? Kristen Stewart fucking her director, and the Elton John/Madonna hissy fits? Really?

I do love this country, its foundation, the opportunities it's afforded my family and, by extension, myself.

However, we too are prone to fucking up, being incredibly shallow. My recognizing that isn't tantamount to US-bashing. In fact, I hope we learn from our mistakes (big leap? who knows), but ignoring flaws does nothing to fix them.

Gossip pages are gossip pages. No offense but it is what it is. You do realize however that when US papers have those gossip stories...most papers across the world have those same headlines right?

Sure, workers in this country won't settle for $40 a week and unsafe factories. But I'll bet they'd take cuts in pay if it meant keeping factories in this country.

And I don't even know what Nikes cost, other than too damn much, because this old woman has never owned a pair. I know I've bought shoes that were made in China because it's pretty hard to avoid but I'm kinda past the stage in my life where I need a little swoosh mark on my shoes to be cool.

Sure, if youd like. The US has had some notable contributions. I'd be interested in hearing who you consider the most influential.

The thing is, coding is all math. There'd be no computers without the contributions of the early mathematicians

I guess the automobile wouldn't have been invented without the creation of the wheel from the cavemen either. I guess American innovation should stop and just pay homage to what has already been created? I'm sure when Pythagoras was carving out his theories in rock he envisioned the iPod or televison right?

Honestly...it's comments like these that let me know you do care. Made up our own sports? You do realize that the US in an overall majority could care less about the Olympics which the world deems "proper" sports such as you do and we are still leading in the medal count. I personsally couldn't care less but you do realize that right? And even if we slip to 10th in the medal count...we don't care.
I'm trying to figure out why you think Americans don't care about the Olympics. People have been talking about it everywhere I go.

Everyone was watching the games online at work yesterday. I am not a sports fan at all (well aside from watching Beckham ;) ) but I love the Olympics. So yeah...anecdotal, but I think it's safe to say there are enough Americans who care about the Olympics.

And again, the US wasn't even a thought when those "great thinkers" existed. I guess they just didn't have the smarts to actually create these products of every day society or else their native countries would be dominant today. I guess the real genius exists in saying a circle compromises of 360 degrees vs. flying to the Moon. I'd like to see all of those "great thinkers" do that!

Look at the front page of your sports page tomorrow. I don;t know where you live but I guarantee your closest MLB and NFL team is headlined way before the olympic story of the day.

...and I would say that anyone in the US that actually does watch the Olympics, it's just for national pride. Other than Michael Phelps...can you name an athlete? Do you know what events there are in the olympics actually? There's like 9,000 of them and 8992 of them are pretty much bar games! I saw tonight walking! Walking is an event? Walking?:lol:
