Five people hurt in church hall 'machete attack'
Five elderly singing group members have been injured after a man reportedly armed with a machete burst into a church hall.

An 84-year-old man was among those hurt during the incident at St Paul's Cray hall, in Orpington, south-east London, on Tuesday night.

"None of the injuries are believed to be serious and none were caused by the machete," a Met Police spokesman said.

The force said a man, 56, had been arrested as part of investigations.

He was arrested on suspicion of assault and criminal damage and was being treated in hospital for a hand injury, the police spokesman added.

'Smashed car'
Members of the group said a masked man with a Mohican haircut, or wearing a wig, broke into the hall and staged a random attack.

Two women, one in her 80s and another aged about 60, and three men - one aged 84 and two in their 60s - were injured, according to the Met.

Ginny Warner, who had been singing in her local ladies' barbershop group, said a man "went to the vicar's driveway and was smashing up the vicar's car and then he started walking towards where we were".

"I was trying to peep through the curtains to describe him to the police on the phone without being noticed," she added.

Ms Warner said it took two passing strangers to bring the attack to a halt.

"A black guy who was a complete hero arrived and wrestled the guy on to the grass," she said.

My guess is that if this had been in the States we'd be looking at multiple deaths via a gun... god bless the UK.
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

So it doesn't say how the five elderly individuals were hurt. If the injuries weren't from the machete, and the guy never actually made it into the church, then what happened to them?

I suspect they probably all rushed to an adjacent room to take cover and were injured in the melee. Maybe a few of them fell over.

Had it been America, he would've traded in his machete for an easily accessible assault rifle.

I could go out on a limb and say it wouldn't have been a bunch of old londoners being attacked. Aside from that there aren't that many conclusions you could assume about it being here.
As I have pointed out, assault rifles are less likely to kill a person than a cutting tool so jumping to the conclusion that this person would have jumped at the chance to buy a gun just shows the bias of those assuming.
If it was in the US, seemingly the entire world, but mostly just 24 cable news, would talk about it for months on end and there would be a push for machete banning around the country. There would be a few good jokes written about it on night time tv. Probably also would be a bunch of people standing up for the rights of Americans to buy and own machetes who would march on the location about a week after the attack holding signs that read "Machetes don't kill people, people kill people" and they would be right, and others would counter that Machetes are dangerous and they would be right too...

You're right in a few places -- Machetes are very dangerous. I could probably hack at like 3 people before I was likely stopped, as opposed to 70 or more people before my 'machete' jammed on me. ;)

and yes, I'll agree: assault rifles are less likely to kill a person than a cutting tool...but I think our responses were just some light sarcasm...and anyway, you're more likely to be shot with an assault rifle in the USA than you are in the UK, and THAT is no joke. When an AR-15 is almost as easy to get as a machete, that is a fucking travesty to me.

Yep, gun massacres sure are something to be proud of. Especially if they draw attention to the U.S.

Though maybe you're actually on to something here. Could it be that the root cause of these mass shootings is that too many Americans are attention seekers? Is there something in the huge focus on stardom and celebrity in the U.S that pushes some people to carry out these dramatic acts of violence? Coupled with the fact that fear and violence are ingrained in American culture.

I mean, if you can't win American Idol, then I suppose you could always pick up a few semi-automatic rifles instead and go start a whole different kind of party.

No, I just think that the rest of the World is fascinated with the US and quite jealous to be honest. Kind of like the pretty and popular girl in school. No one talks about her being the class president or class valedictorian. All they talk about is how big a slut she is and who she banged.

Hmm...Sorry this paper decided to splash their front page with a huge picture of the Olympics (which BTW are pretty meaningless here in the US even though US still ends up in the leaders...sorry but the truth) but when you go to the actual news section of this paper....there the US is. Perhaps you can find a college newspaper somewhere? :fp:

It's at the top of the page. It mentions how many Americans appear to suffer from ego-centrism, and attention-seeking. I suspect it stems from a media and/or culture that teaches people that 'success', and ultimately self-worth, can be measured by how many Facebook friends you have, or by how many people get to see your face on t.v. It may also be related to a culture/media obsessed with promoting fear and violence - see 'Bowling For Columbine' if you need some elaboration.

It was an attempt to understand the repeated incidents of extravagant violence that keep occurring in the U.S.

And your following posts helped corroborate my point.

    Thanks again.
