38% of wirgley attendee's are visitors. move the cubs to rosemont or schaumburg and i think attendance drops to 15K per game after the intial euphoria of the ball park wears off.
and i agree...fuck the jumbo tron. the right field screen is bad enough.
This ^
Also, the Cubs have some of the highest ticket prices in baseball.
You build a billion dollar park for a shitty team...fewer people go....how do they make money, how do they pay off the park? Ticket prices and concessions will go up. Now you're not only alienating people who love Wrigley, but you're making those that DO go pay more to see the same shitty team lose.
Would be the team's biggest mistake...
Well, I suppose the Cubs organization is known for making giant fn mistakes, but that would be the death of the club.
I agree that it is highly unlikely that they will move, but you can't blame them for at least threatening it. The way they are handcuffed by the city and the "neighborhood" is beyond fucking ridiculous. Like pureoc said, the city needs the Cubs way more than they need the city. Wrigleyville and the surrounding neighborhoods would crumble if they left.
I really don't think the AZ comparison is fair. Tons of transplants in AZ. If the Cubs were to move to Rosemont or wherever else, I think that they would still be in OK shape.
I agree that Wrigleyville and the city need the Cubs WAY more than the Cubs need them. If the Cubs moved, the northside would become the southside in no time. Everyone would move the hell out as the south moved north.
I believe, if the Cubs moved to say Rosemont, they will lose tens of thousands of fans in the process. Despite being easier to get to, easier to park, more conveniences...the real fans aren't going to want to go to see a shitty team play in an annoying park. If almost 40% of your ticket sales are to tourists, the remaining 60% to fans...not only are you going to lose the tourists, but you'll also lose a large chunk of the diehards.
Like it or not, Wrigley is an experience. Mega-modern parks are not.
Yep. I'd me moving my ass out of Roscoe Village real quick if that were to happen.
I just think that the whole situation that the Cubs are in is complete bullshit. The fact that they can't do anything to their own ballpark without going through all of the nonsense is such a joke. This jerkoff Alderman Tunney drives me nuts. He keeps talking about the "neighborhood" and all the residents. If you live in Wrigleyville, you know what you're getting yourself into. If you don't like all the traffic, noise, and drunken assholes wandering around everywhere, then go live in one of the other great neighborhoods in this city.
If they were to move, it would make things much different. They'd be a normal sports team that doesn't play their game in an amusement park type of atmosphere. Sure, they would lose all the tourists and people that go to Wrigley just because that is the cool thing to do. But if they have a good team, people will come. No matter where they are playing.
the biggest mistake the yankees made in franchise history was knocking down the old park to build the new one. the cubs would be making the same blunder if they relocated the team to rosemont.

Yeah, but the Yankees will still draw well due to one important factor...
They are a good team that wins championships.
IF the Cubs were as successful as the Yankees, I'm pretty sure there would be no Wrigleyville debate...the Cubs would get everything they wanted, end of discussion.
If they wanted to build a new stadium, people would be up in arms about losing Wrigley, BUT people would still go to watch a winning team. I think Ricketts forgets that the Cubs are terrible. They've been terrible, and they likely will be for the foreseeable future. I also think Ricketts forgets how important Wrigley is as well.
Let the White Sox and Cubs swap stadiums for two years. That would be a huge reality check as the Cubs revenue would go to shit. <--This isn't a knock on US Cell Field...just saying if the Cubs played there for a couple of years, ticket sales compared to Wrigley would drop sooooo fast.
I think the renovations look awesome......You couldn't pay me to go to a game currently, the team and the building both suck. July 19th is the only time in the next few years I see myself hitting up Wrigley....
I say bring on the changes, and fuck the rooftop owners and the residents. Lets see how fast your property value drops as soon as the Cubs pull out of the neighborhood.
On Wednesday, Chicago Cubs owner Tom Ricketts said he would consider moving the team out of 99-year-old Wrigley Field if plans for renovations needed to generate revenue to compete were blocked.
On Thursday, an independent league baseball team, the Schaumburg Boomers, who play their home games 25 miles west of Wrigley, offered the Cubs a chance at playing games at their park should those renovations fall through.
The only stipulation: The Boomers get first dibs on playing dates and times.
"We did this to have some good-natured fun," said Andy Viano, president and general manager of the Frontier League team. "It's a good way to tell people what we have to offer."
Although the Boomers' park holds only 7,365 fans, the field's dimensions are identical to those at Wrigley.
The team's pitch? Its most expensive ticket is $10.
"That will get you in the front row behind the dugout," Viano said.
A 20-ounce beer and a hot dog cost a combined $7, according to Viano. Plus, the team offers free parking.
Viano said that if the Cubs want, he's willing to grow ivy on the outfield walls, but he can't offer much to replicate the Wrigleyville atmosphere.
"We have the expressway over the right-field wall and a small municipal airport over the left-field wall," he said.
The Boomers open their season in two weeks. The team averaged around 2,500 fans per game last year.
"We'll propose a fair and honest rent, no question about that, but we have one tenant that's committed to winning a championship in 2013 so the Boomers would get first priority on dates," Viano added in a news release. "However, I think a Friday afternoon Cubs matinee would make for the perfect opening act before a Boomers game under the lights with a spectacular, free post-game fireworks show!"
As for the Cubs, proposed renovations estimated to cost $500 million include a new video board, an updated clubhouse for the players and improved facilities for fans.
By far the thorniest issue is the plan for a 6,000-square-foot video screen over left field, as seen in many major league ballparks. The difference is that Wrigley -- the second-oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball behind Fenway Park in Boston -- is surrounded by privately owned clubs with rooftop bleachers whose owners object to any changes that could block their bird's-eye views into the stadium.
The rooftop businesses have been left out of discussions on the proposed upgrade, but they think they should have a seat at the bargaining table because they have a contract in which they share 17 percent of their revenue with the Cubs. Legal action is a possibility.

You morons moved next to a ball park that has been there for 100 years. How many of you residents are over 100 years old? Probably none, so you all should shut the f up. You moved next to a ballpark and a bunch of bars. If you want peace and quiet move somewhere else. I feel zero sympathy for these people as it was their CHOICE to live here. Also, last time I checked it's not exactly a cheap area to live, so I'm sure most of these residents could easily afford to move or relocate to a location just as nice. I doubt it will happen but I hope Rickets tells these people to go screw themselves and moves to the burbs. Enough is enough!

Should have been a no hitter except for a bad call by the scorer early in the game. Kerry was and still is my favorite cub behind ryno.
Thrilled with the Rizzo deal. If he really becomes the player that everyone says he is going to be, the Cubs are getting him at a bargain and can start building around him.
