I believe Marty is still bitter that the Cubs fired (or did not renew the contract of) his son. Get over it dude - your kid got to move to Fox.

We won the last 4 out of 5 games. Trying really hard to stay positive.

This Edwin Jackson signing really isn't working out. Luckily, we only have him under contract for 5 years. :fp: :fp:

    0-4
    6.27 ERA
    :fp:

    No joke....I could do that!
I should send an email to Epstein.

    "Hey Theo,
I can give you Jackson's numbers at a fraction of the cost."

Granted, my fastest fastball was only 82...

    But yeah...Jackson fuckin sucks!

Worst signing of the Theo/Jed era.

And that's saying a lot considering they are paying Ian Stewart $2MM this year

You played in HS and couldn't hit a 90?
We had some close to 90 in HS. Most could toss it but didn't know where it was going. Made it a little nerve racking standing in the box.
I later played on a private league (off-season wood bat league) for a bunch of college players in the off-season. Many of them could hit 90-94 pretty easily. Yeah, at that speed, you just gotta see that it's in the zone, swing, and hope for the best.

Nope, most were in the low to mid 80's at the most. It's incredible what another 5-10 mph can do

    Very true!
Also, it's amazing at what that 5-10 can do when you get hit. Holy f! I see all those pros get smoked and not even rub it. F that! I got hit a few times at a 90-ish and I thought my arm got ripped off and my hip shattered!:lol:

It's about time Ricketts stopped fucking around and said they will move the team if they can't do the renovation. I'm not even a Cubs fan, but it's fucking ridiculous the way the city and neighborhood are fucking around with them.

Exactly. Let's see how wonderful and tourist friendly Wrigleyville will become if the Cubs move. If you've driven west past Wrigley on Irving Park or Addison you know what will probably move into the area if the cubs move out. The rooftop owners and neighborhood need the Cubs way more than the Cubs need Wrigleyville. Personally I'd love it if they built a new modern stadium that was accessible with parking and a train stop in the north or west burbs. I'd be easier for me to get too. Maybe I'm in the minority but I think a lot of Cubs fans would welcome the idea of a new stadium.

Fix up Wrigley, but keep it as-is.

Hearing Ricketts talk about modernizing Wrigley with fuckin jumbo-tron screens and all the other bullshit he's suggested really pisses me off!

Fix what needs fixing and move on.

As far as the "The Cubs moving" talk goes...
Give me a fn break! Ricketts is complaining that they need MORE revenue to compete. Ok, but who's going to pay for a billion dollar ballpark? The Cubs can't afford it, the city of Chicago is broke, the state of Illinois is broke...
The fact of the matter is that if a billion dollar, modern park replaced Wrigley today...it would likely have the opposite effect that what Ricketts is visualizing. It would immediately draw fans...BUT, the Cubs still fn suck and the appeal of a new park will wear off. How many thousands of people go to Wrigley ever year because its Wrigley? THAT is revenue. people like the old stadium, people like the old-school feel, people like to sit in the sun, have a dog and a beer in the summer. Put the worst baseball team in MLB history in a stadium that has 60,000 seats....they'll be lucky to sell 20k. They sell more than that now at Wrigley.

I go to Diamondbacks games here in AZ...mostly when the Cubs are in town, but sometimes just to go to a game. Anyways, Chase field is this "new", modern park. It's got a retractable roof, it's got good food, microbrews, mixed drinks...whatever you would want. The Dbacks aren't usually a great team, but they are usually decent...far more successful than the Cubs since they've been a team. You've got this great stadium in a great location with parking all over the place, a pretty good team...and nobody goes. It's embarrassing to see that giant stadium with so many empty seats. When the Cubs are in town, it's 2/3 Cub fans. They don't even sell out playoff games.
This is just one example of why "If you build it, they will come" doesn't work. For what it is, Chase Field is a alright place for the average "need to be entertained at all times" fan to watch a game. It annoys the shit out of me in so many ways!!!

So Ricketts can play the "We'll move the Cubs" BS all he wants, but the fact of the matter is he can't move, he won't move. If by chance they do, they might as well end the Cubs altogether and start a new team...because it will be the death of the Cubs either way. Hard to believe this organization could get worse, but it would.

I agree that it is highly unlikely that they will move, but you can't blame them for at least threatening it. The way they are handcuffed by the city and the "neighborhood" is beyond fucking ridiculous. Like pureoc said, the city needs the Cubs way more than they need the city. Wrigleyville and the surrounding neighborhoods would crumble if they left.

I really don't think the AZ comparison is fair. Tons of transplants in AZ. If the Cubs were to move to Rosemont or wherever else, I think that they would still be in OK shape.

38% of wirgley attendee's are visitors. move the cubs to rosemont or schaumburg and i think attendance drops to 15K per game after the intial euphoria of the ball park wears off.

and i agree...fuck the jumbo tron. the right field screen is bad enough.

they had the blueprints of the renovations in yesterday's red eye. love everything they are doing outside the park and with the entrances, however the jumbo tron is one big fucking mistake (or maybe three big fucking mistakes, they want to really add three?).

I agree that Wrigleyville and the city need the Cubs WAY more than the Cubs need them. If the Cubs moved, the northside would become the southside in no time. Everyone would move the hell out as the south moved north.
I think the AZ comparison is fair. While the Diamondbacks don't have the fanbase the Cubs do, mostly due to it being a young team, Phoenix is the 5th (or is it 6th) largest city in the country. Despite the large number of transplants, there is no reason why they only sell 9-10k seats for any game. Getting to and from the ballpark is ridiculously easy. It's cheap and sometimes free to park and the tickets to the game are dirt-cheap. They are a good team, and nobody goes. The natives are truly fans (granted they support the Cardinals with much more passion) and many transplants, while holding on to the allegiance of where they came from, will usually say they'll root for the D-backs as that "second team". Nobody goes.
As a Cubs fan, I don't usually "want" to go even when they are in town. The stadium is irritating. They are constantly entertaining you at all times! They have mid-inning stadium announcer people, they blast shitty music, they play videos, they have on-field crap, they have in the stands crap....it's a joke. That is NOT baseball...and I think it does turn people besides me off. They can't sell 10k seats for a regular season game, yet they'll sell 10-15k for every spring training game. :? Diamondback games draw the fans out of the woodwork for games that don't mean anything. I believe 100% that it's the atmosphere. The D-backs play in a park 2 minutes from me here in Scottsdale. It's a new park but very old school. It's outside, it doesn't have those annoyances of Chase Field. Real baseball fans here don't like that shit.

I believe, if the Cubs moved to say Rosemont, they will lose tens of thousands of fans in the process. Despite being easier to get to, easier to park, more conveniences...the real fans aren't going to want to go to see a shitty team play in an annoying park. If almost 40% of your ticket sales are to tourists, the remaining 60% to fans...not only are you going to lose the tourists, but you'll also lose a large chunk of the diehards.
Like it or not, Wrigley is an experience. Mega-modern parks are not.

I agree...Wrigley is an experience and one you will never get from a Mega-modern park. Most of the people that go to see the Cubs aren't there to watch the game (sadly) but are there to have the Wrigley experience. Sure, Wrigley needs improvements, but a fucking jumbotron is not going to get us the World Series.
