If anyone is in denial about who was really running that place read this. The one person who tried to stand up to him was fired and shunned by the rest of the University and threatened by students and locals.
I say shut it down as well. This goes far beyond and normal football related 'crimes'. Paying some kids to play football -- generating some fake grades..... not this was the protection of a monster or at least choosing to ignore something that had to be painfully obvious. We all heard Sandusky speak and saw his mannerisms and so if in 1998 there was some suspicion raised i am sure JoePa knew in his heart that this man was weird and something terrible was happening.
He didn't just do nothing about it either --- he enabled it to continue. And he wasn't alone -- he had help from everyone who was involved in making decisions for the school.
it's a very sad chapter in American history
Shut it down
I guess maybe I don't know enough about the NCAA and what it can/can't do. But Penn State obviously didn;t gain any competitive advantage, so is this really there territory?
They received a competitive advantage by not reporting criminal acts. Not just Sandusky either. There were player issues that Paterno kept in house. The negative publicity would have hurt recruiting.
i agree - the competitive advantage was gained by not making the public aware they had a staff member who was raping children. Tough to sell a recruits parents on Penn St being a great place for their son when that is happening.
Laughable. He was stunned at the charges? He knew Sandusky was investigated in 1998 and knew about the shower incident in 2001. That family needs to shut up and go away.
This show, another show, a show here and a show there.

Yeah, for me, I think that is quite the stretch. Personally, I think this belongs in the hands of the courts, not the NCAA. And hell, perhaps as part of what comes next, the board gets rid of football for awhile (due to legal agreements to settle civil suits, etc.).
i would say the football program should be shut down ... it is pretty clear that a large reason for the cover up was to protect not only penn state but the football program specifically ... shut it down for 5 years starting next year and allow all football players to transfer to another school without the mandatory sit out periods ...

What about their scholarships? There aren't any available. Man, that would suck big time for them.
to me the football program isn't the problem it's the people (person) running the program that is the problem...well, the main culprit is dead and hopefully everyone else associated with the program in the past will be fired and/or jailed...but if psu and/or the ncaa shut it down for a time i'm cool with that...as long as they don't punish the current kids

yeah ... i agree ... but in the grand scheme of things ... it's the right thing to do ... i do feel bad for the student body and the athletes who have to pay for the poor decisions of those in power but in a way that's life ... war is the same thing ...
but something HAS to be done ... a statement has to be made that football is not bigger than life especially not bigger than child abuse ... and that anyone who thinks that was grossly wrong in their perception ...

maybe start the suspension in 4 years or whatever ...

it'd be easier to just allow current students to transfer without sitting a season out

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see what shakes out. I would personally prefer a more creative approach to instilling that message that includes keep the football program going, but I completely understand the sentiment about shutting it down. Though, I'm still very unclear as to how the NCAA should have the power to do this. It seems like it would have to be Penn State's or the government's (state school after all) decision.

I think you would have to grant a waiver to any school that gets one of the kids to increase their scholarship levels by 1 (for each kid they take - with a maximum of say 4-5 for each university). And have it be that way for 1-2 years minimum. The tuition/expenses paid for by Penn State. If they go that route that is. That could make for a decent transition for these kids,
Yeah, I saw that. I didn't think they would considering their utter lack of emotion and by-the-rules approach to everything they have overseen in the past.
Plane banner over Penn State: ‘Take the statue down or we will’

Attention, Penn State’s Board of Trustees: look up in the sky. There’s a message for you.
The university’s board still stands undecided on what to do with the statue of former coach Joe Paterno outside Beaver Stadium despite ongoing public outcry to bring it down in the wake of the Freeh report.
Now, there’s yet another obvious push in favor of what many already support.
A small plane displaying the banner “Take the statue down or we will” has been flying over Penn State Tuesday morning. Below is a picture of the banner.
It’s not immediately clear who “we” refers to. Likewise, who paid for the plane and banner is a mystery.

They feel the urge to "refurbish" the showers where many of the crimes took place and nobody except program participants will most likely ever be. However, they don't have a problem leaving his enabler to stand where everyone, including the victims will be able to view his visage because they are worried about upsetting supporters.
And folks wonder why the football program itself needs to be shut down for the time being.
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.
Brown has taken Paterno's name of their coaching award and are now discussing his removal from their hall of fame. Penn is gonna decide on the statue in the next 10 days ...

Wow! Good for the NCAA. They finally seemed to do something right.

$60M and take away their wins for the last 4 years seems a little out there to me..I could see cleaning house and starting over but punishing the players seems odd.

Godfather.
Players not punished. They still get to stay on their free ride and get an education. They still get to play football. They can also transfer IMMEDIATELY and play IMMEDIATELY. Yes, unlikely/impossible for THIS year at this late date. But, they still get to play football and get an education. What's the punishment? No Bowl swag? Really? That's what you're worried about?
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.
I'm not a big fan of lawsuits, but if there was ever a deserving case... The victims and their families deserve restitution from Penn State University and should hold the Sandusky and Paterno estates liable for their negligence. The Institution and criminals that allows and knowingly masks criminal activity need to be punished in the places they hold most dear to them... their fucking pocketbooks and the money they so worship.
(Same goes for you, Catholic Church motherfuckers).

I just wish it never HAD been placed ahead of all that to begin with.
Lesson learned at a huge price? Yeah.
