Handwritten was the first album I've listened to by this band and I must say I didn't like it one bit. Very standard and bland to my ears. Maybe this wasn't the best place to start with them but seeing as people are really enjoying it maybe it doesn't matter so much. Maybe I'll try again some other time.

Sometimes I despair of you ;):D each to their own matey.
I am still to listen to Handwritten.

Handwritten is so much better than American Slang. I like the whole 'big sounding' production. Their music is made for it. I don't mind that their sound hasn't changed all that much. Brian Fallon is becoming sort of a genius songwriter.

Last night was the Handwritten release show and it was incredible. They played 8 songs off Handwritten- 45, Handwritten, Here Comes My Man, Mulholland Drive, Keepsake, Too Much Blood, Howl & Mae. Around 26 songs in total with most of the material coming from Sink Or Swim, 59 Sound & Handwritten. The new songs sound huge live and the band although playing some of them for the first time sounded very tight. The band played without a barricade; Crowd surfing was intense to see from the balcony during some songs. Show was very intimate and Brian talked about Handwritten being number 1 on the itunes charts and thanked the fans for allowing them the opportunity to do this for a living and for letting them quit their day jobs years ago without ever looking back. Rumors are that a Northeast tour is coming in November.

Listened to the album twice on Spotify yesterday.
    I really like it!
I hope they tour and that i can get a ticket!

I thought it was kinda weird that they had 2 covers on the album. I like the covers, but I always thought that this kind of relsease should always be new music...

I also caught that live video stream of Brian playing and answering questions. Very cool! It totally inspired me and I am not actually thinking about going to an open mic night... :o

What is with the dislike of American Slang by many fans? I love all gaslight and american slang is no worse or better to me then any other album. IN fact it has a couple of my favourite songs of theirs (We did when young and Old Haunts).
Just wondering why those who don't like it, don't?

I think American Slang was great, particularly Boxer, Diamond Street, We Did it When Were Young. However it was no '59 Sound. That record was so good it was hard to follow with anything. Expectations were probably too high from fans.

i agree its not a bad album. To me the highlights would be Stay Lucky, and The Queen of Lower Chelsea. To me, and alot of people 59 sound was just so revelatory. So cool sounding. I just love the anthemic, lets all join together and sing at the top of our lungs quality to that album. But I think American Slang sort of differed from that a little, and wasnt as good as 59 sound. I just think they set the bar so high with 59 sound, and alot of people didnt think that American Slang was able to equal it

Got my vinyl copy a few days ago and listened to it yesterday. I also had listened to the NPR stream a couple of times and so after 3 listens I can say it's no where near as good as '59 Sound or American Slang. It just doesn't have that catchy sing-along style that the other two albums have. Most of the songs just don't do much for me.

I really don't like Sink or Swim so Handwritten falls before that in album rank but if I want to listen to some GLA I'll shuffle both '59 Sound and American Slang and throw in 45, Mulholland Drive, Keepsake, and Desire.

Listened to the '59 sound this morning and listening to American Slang right now. Also downloaded an album called sink or swim.

All in all, I think they're pretty good and definitely worth a listen.

Too Polished, too forced.. it just sounds like a band trying too hard to be the opposite of 59 sound when they didnt need too.

Stay Lucky, Boxer, Diamond Church are crackers but they are all I play off that album.

Handwritten thought is a masterpiece!! Exceptional record

    My order of albums -

    Sink or Swim
    Handwritten
    59 Sound
    American Slang

Yes, 59 sound is only 3rd lol. It is an incredible album and it will always remind me of summer/autumn 08 (all I played), but Sink or Swim is my fav by miles and I truly feel Handwritten lyrically beats the 59 sound and for that alone it gets 2nd place.

American Slang does nothing for me... a very boring record - though the tracks come to life when played live. I rarely play this album in full and I think even the band hint in new interviews that the record was missing something

I love this band though... saw em live 5 times and cant wait to hear the new album live

Anyone get the deluxe edition? I wasn't even aware there was one, but went to the local record store and saw it, so picked it up.

There's 3 extra songs- Blue Dahlia, Sliver, & You Got Lucky

So i lsitened to this again today, def. gonna be in my top albums this year.

Sliver is actually a Nirvana cover so that was a nice surprise  Songs that stood out besides Sliver were Handwritten, National Anthem, & Desire.

JB finally got the deluxe version in and I have given it 2 listens so far and LOVE IT..easily the best album I have heard this year.

There is not a bad song on it and whilst I don't dislike Slang, this is a much netter album. Also love the cover of Sliver. They do a few really good covers (SOLAT is very good).

Handwritten, National Anthem, 45, Biloxi Parish are the standouts so far

Fan club T-shirt, stickers and member cards start shipping at the beginning of next week. They ship in the order they received them so those who signed up first will get their packages before those that just recently signed up. Apparently the shirt is a "45 RPM Club" logo shirt, the stickers are 1) 45 RPM Club logo and 2) Gaslight Anthem stickers. The member card is a luggage style card that can fit into your wallet/purse.
