It gets better and better if you ask me. I think even though we were told to expect something different the first listen was a little more jarring than subsequent ones. This album has a lot of layers and really good song writing.

Also, there will be another show in NJ next week. Announced Friday. Don't know where or when but not the Pony as far as I know

Mikee, maybe the wellmont theater in Montclair?

I think smaller. Much smaller .

Each time I play this I like it more. Right now I'm loving Selected Poems and Ain't That a Shame

If I had a guess, I would say the NJ show will be in Vintage Vinyl. I think they posted that 2008 record release party video as a teaser/hint. That's purely speculation/my opinion tho.

Listened to the album 4 times through last night. First listen was definitely different, but I agree that it's a solid record and one that I will love.

My biggest criticism of this album so far is how slow it is. There really isn't a fast rocker. Most of the songs are slow/mid tempo.

I really didnt like my first listen. A few songs id give 3/5 but the album really bored me.

I didnt want another 59 Sound, just something interesting. Wasnt big on Handwritten either. I used to play these guys everyday. To me they just sound boring and uninspired now.

Id say the same for Helter Skeleton and Ain't That a Shame. A few other a pick up tempo too like 1000 years

Yeah there are a few that are a decent tempo, but overall I still feel its a little slow.

Beside the 3 singles that were pre-released, I think I like Helter Skeleton and Underneath the Ground the best so far.

    Nice article!

Ummm, is it just me or am I the only one who hasn't stopped playing this album over and over again? Maybe it's because it's the state of mind I'm in? In a dark, fucked up down world? 1000 days, ya that's fucken up there. This album is pretty fucken amazing and have only listened to it 5 times already. Now, let the fucken shows begin!!!!

Edit-and yes, fucken helter skeleton. Fuck awesome.

Very cool, wish I went but I'll see most of these in September, hopefully.
How many people were there? What kind of banter/stories did Brian tell between songs?

Here's what I was writing about last night as I ran full speed out of my office

It was hot and probably a little too packed. Sound was great. Jesse Malin killed as an opener (including an absolutely insane version of Do You Remember Rock n Roll Radio). I was shocked at how long the line was to get in. The crowd right down front was all hardcore Gaslight fans, so it didn’t feel like this exclusive event from where I was. Because my friend works at JV we got to go around the back and the whole band was back there hanging out. Got to talk to Benny and Alex Levine a little and had a good back and forth with Andy Diamond, who is fucking awesome. He was cool as shit but was basically guarding Fallon from people, so we left him alone.

I think I said in a previous post how burnt out I thought the band was at the end of the last tour. I don’t think I ever saw them having more fun. ALL of the new songs sounded incredible and as far as being “different” they sounded like Gaslight songs. Alex Levine sang a lot of backup and harmonies which came off great, and Alex R played keyboards on a few songs (Underneath the Ground, Sweet Morphine and I think another) which is a new wrinkle. Fallon didn’t say too much, or at least things I remember, other than a few jokes like how the bathrooms in the building don’t give you diseases anymore and making fun of the fact that Ian Perkins isn’t allowed to talk and doesn’t understand baseball and American football.

I’d say though I was most blown away by Red Violins, Aint that a Shame and Helter Skeleton live.

Really wish I could have gone last night. I was stuck in a 3 hr meeting when the email was sent out and by the time I responded of course missed out.

Been listening to the stream for a few days and I love the album. Not sure I get all the talk about this being so different. They already have changes their sound with each album. SOS is a bit punk, 59S has an old school feel, AS has a sort of southern rock feel and Hanswritten is more a modern/grungy sort of sounding record. This one sounds like a mixture of all of them with maybe a little bit of Horrible Crows vibe on some stuff. But it really is not a huge departure. Some really good stuff on this record and I am sure once the actual vinyl and download arrives and I can really listen (been mostly listening as i work) this is going to really grow on me. Amazing band. They NEED to play CT, I dont think they have ever played here!!!
