It is not weird. Enough voters gave them the power to go about governing how they see fit. With minimal resistance actually preventing them from passing bills that takes a majority of the power to do so. You know this. I don't feel like I have to explain that they have more seats than the other parties and what it entitles them to do, I really don't. The parties and people of Canada who oppose harper clearly do not have enough power to replace him. All they can do is complain which gets them nowhere. I don't know why you think it's weird. Harper has the majority of governmental power. Why can't you see this?
Obviously I know how many seats each party has. That is simply not how your dumb "majority" comments come off, and I don't believe that's how you mean it either. You are using the word as a catch phrase as though it's some attempt to fool people into thinking the Conservatives were the choice of the majority of Canadians, and that is absolutely not the case, and YOU know it. I feel like your are using the word as propaganda, and yes, it's weird.

I just wonder what all the people would do who "hate" Steven Harper do if they met him face-to-face? Would they have the balls to actually say anything or just politely shake his hand and say "Hello Mr. Prime Minister" No one on this board has any idea how to run a country. Zip, zilch, nada. Neither does Mulcair, Trudeau, May, et al.
I liken Ito to Fidel Castro, who outlawed religion in Cuba. However, when the pope visits he gets the royal treatment and even meets with the ailing Fidel. Obviously Castro has a feeling about religion, but allows the pope into the country to the adoring public. People yap behind a keyboard all day about what a jackass Harper is, yet they can hardly run a crew of six at McDonalds let alone a nation of 35 million.
It's a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" scenario. Has any PM been universally loved and adored? Absolutely not. Every government has scandals. Is the PM responsible? Of course.
But you have to think, if a few Volkswagen executives can be unscrupulous right under the CEO's nose and he has no idea, that same thing can't happen in the government?
Like Harper is watching over Senators expense accounts?its laughable.
Are you serious? Why would anyone not have the "balls" to say what they wanted to say to Harper? It's not like he's intimidating. I know that if I came face to face with him I'd have a LOT to say, and I wouldn't hold back. Why would I?? I don't tend to throw away opportunities. The only reason I might shake his hand is if I thought it would help me get some answers or explanations out of him... if I didn't think it would help, hell no, I wouldn't shake his hand. Not unless it happened to have dog shit or snot on it, lol. I reall HATE the guy. No quotation marks required! I have never had such a feeling about any PM before. Just this motherfucker in particular. You seem dead set on not holding Harper accountable for anything, even when you do, TBH.

he formed a majority government. he was not voted for by the majority of canadians. a majority is defined as more than half. he got 39% of the 61% who turned out to vote. so 24% of the country voted for him. he got the most number of votes of the 5 candidates, which is called a plurality.

Stop asking why I can't see this. I know how many seats each party has, lol. That is absolutely not how you are phrasing it when you throw in your "majority" catch-phrase. I think you know it. Anyway, it's not a big deal. It's just annoying to see you repeatedly say that Harper rules with a majority when he in fact rules with a minority of Canadians' votes, because we ALL know what that suggests when you say that unless you give it specific context. If you were not aware of how you throwing out that "majority" word over and over for no apparent reason comes off, now you are.

I know he wasn't voted by the majority of Canadians. Having said that, enough voters gave him their vote. ABC backfired to the wishful thinkers.
I don't really expect anyone other than the Conservatives to win as long as the left vote is split the way it is. Crazier things have happened, and it's looking closer now than it has in years, but I still think it will be a minor miracle if it does. I think the NDP and the Libs should form a coalition.... but they won't.

If the CONS win...and if they do it will be a minority......they won't last long. And I think there is a far greater chance of a coalition that you think. Mulcair would do it....and the pressure on Trudeau to do it would be immense. Interesting times.
Also PJ Soul, you live in a place where getting out the progressive vote could make a big difference.....country wide. You got work to do.
I think the NDP and the Libs should form a coalition.... but they won't.
Interesting because neither party can stand on it's own feet. They need each other to at least make a stance on something besides waffling. The Green party would do a better job at leading than a Liberal/NDP coalition. An NDP federal government will never happen because their supporters are all hot air....I mean mulcair.
I think we should rename this the "I Hate Harper" thread
I'm sure you are all really nice people, and you are Pearl Jam fans which is cool, but your overtly left-wing leanings are just waaaay to much for me.
Everyone wants a handout instead of working for it. I will just never get it. I moved out of the house at 18 and my first full time gig was for 6 bucks an hour. This is after dropping out of post-secondary school and wasting taxpayers dollars for four years (not proud of that).
So instead of feeling sorry for myself about how the rich get richer and whining the government should pay me for doing nothing, I began to work and work hard. It opened doors for me. I moved to places people don't necessarily want to live (Fort Mcmurray) and slugged it out for a decade.
Now I make a really decent living and my lovely wife and I can give ourselves and her three kids a good life. But according to Trudeau, I'm not doing enough. I have to "give a little more". It's not bad enough I give thousands a year in income tax alone already... I'm just not doing "enough". Nevermind that nimrod Nenshi continually jacks our property taxes about 3% a year already, now Trudeau is going to tax me some more. Mulcair would do the same.
The TPP will not only benefit the rich, as stated by a another left wing lunatic. Does anyone really think free trade is a bad thing? Opening up 40% of the world markets is not good for jobs in Canada? Those "corporate whores" you talk about that EMPLOY PEOPLE. Or is it just that you don't really want jobs, you actually want to sit on your fat ass and collect a cheque.
Maybe you just want something to complain about. Seems like the way it is these days. If you think it's that bad, vote for who you want, but Canada is doing just fine.

Poor you, you had to work for a living. We left wing lunitics wouldn't know anything about that. Were just fat asses that want to collect a cheque.
It's not rocket science here - FT agreements do open markets and eliminate tariffs which in theory allows various industries to compete in new territory. But this is the fundamental problem with FT agreements in Canada. How does one compete against all the other competitors? By price. How do you compete on price? You lower your cost to produce and manufacture a good. How do you do that? You lower wages, you cut overhead (fire people) or you move your labour force where it's cheaper. That's what NAFTA did. That's what TPP will do.
Ya - I grew up poor and I worked but I'm not blind. I know I am where I am today because there was a social infrastructure that allowed a kid from a poor family to get an education and to go to university. I know the community programs that fed me breakfast were huge. I know the the after-school programs that allowed me to learn an instrument or play sports kept me from mixing with the wrong crowd. I know that our health care system allowed my family to not worry about paying doctors bills. Although I do pretty good right now - I know that the decimation of our social infrastructure will hurt me in the long run. But hey - I just want a handout and I'm a lunatic but at least I'm not an idiot.

Good job.
I read the post you responded to and was going to tackle it, but decided against it. Your words have likely had little effect, but as I said... good job- you do what you can and hope for the best.
A country just to the south of us, which prides itself on capitalism, is wrought with poverty, crime, and desperation. In Europe, countries with advanced social programs see their citizens enjoy high qualities of life and experience happiness.
If I had been on social assistance for four years and eventually got my shit together... I'd be willing to give back to the system that never saw me on the streets resorting to crime or digging in garbage cans- allowing me to get my feet on the ground and make a life for myself.
F**king selfishness. Take full advantage of a caring system... get what you need from it... and then support the dismantling of it now that you don't need it.
6 reasons why you need to carefully read the small print on Harper's Trans-Pacific Partnership deal
Only two weeks before election day, the Government of Canada has reached an agreement on the sweeping Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
Conservative leader Stephen Harper said it was an "historic day," however Canadians may not get a look at the small print until after election day, as only the broad highlights of the deal have been made public and key details are still missing.
The devil is most likely in the details.
If ratified, the TPP will carry wide-reaching implications for Canadian laws and regulations.
While some will argue those changes could mean a net-benefit for Canada, other changes could feel like "swallowing dead rats," at least according to New Zealand's trade minister.
Here are a few of the issues people are raising about the TPP:
1. It lets foreign corporations sue governments for lost profits The deal's "investor-state dispute settlement mechanism" will give foreign corporations the ability to sue governments in secretive tribunals, something that would leave taxpayers covering foreign corporations for lost profits.
Critics say this undermines national sovereignty and democratic institutions.
Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz argues the TPP will impose "fundamental changes to countries' legal, judicial, and regulatory frameworks, without input or accountability through democratic institutions."
U.S. Democratic Senators Elizabeth Warren blasted the move as shifting power from domestic courts to "unaccountable international tribunals" while even the libertarian Cato Institute says it extends "special privileges to foreign corporations" and "usurps national sovereignty."
2. It risks killing 1 in 4 Canadian auto jobs Unifor economist Jim Stanford estimates TPP could kill 24% (24,600) of Canada's existing automotive manufacturing jobs.
Under NAFTA, 60% of vehicles and parts sold tariff-free had to be manufactured in North America. But under TPP, that's reduced to 45% - that effectively rewrites key protections for the auto industry originally written into NAFTA.
The Government of Ontario is expressing concern over the "tariff reduction schedule and the rules of origin for autos and parts," warning that the deal will "expose both Ontario's auto assembly and parts producers to much stiffer global competition," threatening job losses in the auto sector.
3. It could mean a "significant overhaul" of Canadian copyright law Open Media says the changes to intellectual property law spelled out under TPP "poses an extreme threat to free expression online."
The group points to a leaked draft of TPP intellectual property changes suggesting strengthened criminal penalties for copyright violators, new powers to block websites and an extension of copyright terms by 20 years.
University of Ottawa's Michael Geist, a Canada Research Chair in Internet and E-Commerce Law, says if true, this would mean a "significant overhaul" of Canadian copyright law.
Reviewing the Government's summary released Monday, Geist notes the text is not finalized and the government does not specify how long copyright terms will be increased.
4. It could help polluters profit Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune says the deal will "empower big polluters to challenge climate and environmental safeguards in private trade courts and would expand trade in dangerous fossil fuels that would increase fracking and imperil our climate."
5. It will increase the price of medicine world wide One of the biggest winners under the TPP are pharmaceutical companies.
There are questions about what this means for any future national pharmacare program. And increasing the length of patents delays the length of time for cheaper generic drugs to come to market, effectively driving up the price of medicine in some of the world's poorest countries.
Economist Joseph Stiglitz and former US Secretary of Labour Robert Reich warn these changes could delay cheaper generic forms of essential, life-saving drugs. Doctors Without Borders says "the big losers" under TPP are "patients and treatment providers in developing countries."
6. It's more than just a trade deal Stiglitz and Adam Hersh have challenged the language being used to refer to the agreement as misleading.
It's not about "free trade," they say, so much as it's "an agreement to manage its members' trade and investment relations."
I think the NDP and the Libs should form a coalition.... but they won't.

neither could the current incarnation of the conservative party. they were formed by the PC's and the Alliance. it has nothing to do with the politics of the party not working, it happens when the ideologies of two parties are too closely alligned. they split the vote, and the loser becomes the winner.
I'm not NDP, but seriously, quit insulting people en masse. it's ignorant, to say the least.

Well I expect this guy to be dropped immediately.http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canada-election-2015-conservative-candidate-jagdish-grewal-gay-youth-1.3259324 Definitely not a harper guy. I am curious though if a visible minority is as easy to drop as non-ones. The spidey sense is tingling that this is going to leave a black mark up until election day. Great politicking from mulcair though to bring this out. Wish the NDP would take more firm stances like this in the future....oh wait that would not make them NDP though. Forget it.

I can't respond to everyone I pissed off lol, so I'll just respond to the last one.
That post is how I feel, call me "ignorant" a "NEO CON" or whatever else. Ignorant would mean uninformed or blind. Everything I said was based on what I deem fact, followed by an opinion of that fact.
The Canadian way is to complain, to sit back and whine about how bad it is, when really it's pretty damn good. You have every opportunity in this country if you take a shot, commit yourself, and DO something.
If you like paying more taxes, have atter! There are about 60 taxes/fees I can think of off the top of my head you are already paying. What was I thinking? We need a stronger middle class!! We should all strive for the middle!! I mean, that's what Canada is all about right? Mediocrity... Just flying under the radar.
If you lived in Calgary, there is more than one Nenshi bashed. If he becomes PM, well that would be an unmitigated disaster. This guy still lives with his parents lmao. Beauty.
It's a free country people! I have every right to my opinion. You have the right to yours, Funniest part to me is, You fight against capitalism on a board of a corporation, and that corporation is Pearl Jam. You don't think MOST of the money stays at the top? I'm sure the CEO (Ed) and the Board of Directors (stone,Jeff, Mike, and Matt) all make off very handsomely with the money you spend. I'm sure their employees make a good living, not millionaires necessarily, but middle class living. They support different charities (like almost EVERY OTHER CORPORATION) and do good deeds, but in the end, it's a business. Hey, I see nothing wrong with it! They didn't need the CBC to be famous. They got there because they were good. Kind of like Apple, Google, Exxon, Canadian Tire, Walmart, spongebob square pants, Royal Dutch Shell, etc etc.
You live In a free market economy, all your ridiculous vitriolic rants about Harper making deals with the devil are laughable. I've said before, I'm no Harper fan, but I am also not "ignorant" either
Somebody somebody will explain to me how they think the world works without capitalism. Yeah Norway and Sweden, but they aren't Canada, with 10 provinces and 3 territories who all seem to think differently about what is important here. I'm fine with the social safety net AS IT IS. I care not to give anymore, thanks Turdo. I prefer to give whatever else I can to organizations to help others without the government getting their greasy paws on it first. Remember those days? No probably not because you have been drinking the socialist koolaid since PET

This is the most ignorant post I have read all day. All week. All month?
Remember those days? No probably not because you have been drinking the socialist koolaid since PET
How dare you insult koolaid! The best drink still to this day oh yeah.

You know someone has a weak argument when they have to resort to insults such as "drinking the socialist koolaid" to get their point across. Making fun of people's names is not that convincing, either.
The Nordic countries are capitalist countries that also have strong social policies. Their high tax rates have led to some of the happiest, healthiest and most well-educated populations in the world, with low poverty rates. Somehow, despite their egalitarian societies, they just don't seem to view themselves as mediocre; in fact, the quality of life in those countries is at least as good as in Canada (and it beats the crap out of that of the US). I don't believe that the goals and wishes of most Canadians are that different from those of the average Swede, Norwegian or Dane, regardless of our geography.

That's not an example of "Nordic countries' policies on the niqab". That's an example of the personal opinion of the "conservative mayor" of Vaxjo, population less than 65,000. From what I can see, wearing the niqab is legal in public areas in Sweden.

You seem dead set on not holding Harper accountable for anything, even when you do, TBH.
He does have a majority.
Not a catch phrase.
Why would I want to fool anyone?
Propaganda? What am I, a conservative monger to you?
Your replies are weird because it is like you are taking my words any making it the complete opposite of what I said. That is weird. It is like talking to a politician or an NDPer.
The majority of government is run by Stephen Harper. Again why can't you see this.
The only dumb comments in federal government come from the NDP - the minority.
he was not voted for by the majority of canadians. a majority is defined as more than half. he got 39% of the 61% who turned out to vote. so 24% of the country voted for him.
he got the most number of votes of the 5 candidates, which is called a plurality.
www.headstonesband.com
That is absolutely not how you are phrasing it when you throw in your "majority" catch-phrase. I think you know it. Anyway, it's not a big deal. It's just annoying to see you repeatedly say that Harper rules with a majority when he in fact rules with a minority of Canadians' votes, because we ALL know what that suggests when you say that unless you give it specific context. If you were not aware of how you throwing out that "majority" word over and over for no apparent reason comes off, now you are.

1. It lets foreign corporations sue governments for lost profits
The deal's "investor-state dispute settlement mechanism" will give foreign corporations the ability to sue governments in secretive tribunals, something that would leave taxpayers covering foreign corporations for lost profits.
2. It risks killing 1 in 4 Canadian auto jobs
Unifor economist Jim Stanford estimates TPP could kill 24% (24,600) of Canada's existing automotive manufacturing jobs.
3. It could mean a "significant overhaul" of Canadian copyright law
Open Media says the changes to intellectual property law spelled out under TPP "poses an extreme threat to free expression online."
4. It could help polluters profit
Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune says the deal will "empower big polluters to challenge climate and environmental safeguards in private trade courts and would expand trade in dangerous fossil fuels that would increase fracking and imperil our climate."
5. It will increase the price of medicine world wide
One of the biggest winners under the TPP are pharmaceutical companies.
6. It's more than just a trade deal
Stiglitz and Adam Hersh have challenged the language being used to refer to the agreement as misleading.
It's not about "free trade," they say, so much as it's "an agreement to manage its members' trade and investment relations."

I'm completely wary of these so called Trade agreements, Big Money is out to control everything. Days gonna come when it happens, then what?
Definitely not a harper guy.
Forget it.

The best drink still to this day oh yeah.
