There is a plethora of different party signs where I ride.
This tells me that people can't make up their mind - very unsettling to me.

Having lived in Victoria for 14yrs I can understand why you see as many signs as you do for one party.

Diversity of opinion - I can see why you would be rattled.

I'm not surprised by the proliferation of Green support in Victoria, but I am surprised by the lack of NDP support. Not sure what it was like when you were here, but the Victoria riding (as opposed to the Saanich/Gulf Islands riding) has been an NDP stronghold for quite some time, with occasional Liberal representation; they haven't had a conservative since the '80s.

It is odd living in an area where people are politically unaware yet signs are everywhere like tulips, every yard has a different coloured sign.
No one can come to a general stronger opinion of who represents the community it seems(for this election).
Come election day it is the same mix of diversified opinions that will be complaining about another majority Harper government.

  • Harper is not winning a majority... We are heading towards a NDP-Liberal coalition.

    My prediction
  • And in related news, they have finally dug up a Conservative candidate from under some rock for our riding. Apparently they had to completely scrub his entire social media profile to remove the homophobic comments, so now he has nothing; nothing, that is, except what was screen captured before the scrubbing......

Riding and driving around Victoria and all the associated municipalities, I'm struck by what I'm seeing in terms of election signs. Green Party/Elizabeth May signs are everywhere - no joke, they're just about in every block, on personal property. There are a smattering of Liberal signs. Haven't seen a single NDP sign yet. Until today hadn't seen a Conservative sign either, but today one popped up - on a road median, not in a yard, meaning it was just put there by the party. I know I'm in May's riding and having the party leader in your riding always generates a bit of buzz, even with a small party, but this is really noticeable. What are others seeing in their areas?

I've seen only one sign in my riding here in Calgary, a CON sign. I guess it's just a foregone conclusion that they will win here so the parties are throwing their money at battle riding's in BC and Ontario.

According to the media, It seems all political parties are having struggles in vetting their candidates.
I am surprised with how many people are so foolishly on social media there are not more issues like this. In fact, the number of "bones in the closet" is surprisingly low considering how public people live their lives.
In fact, any mistake you make can be captured by someone else now. Pissing in a coffee cup is more than a mistake, but I doubt anyone with half a brain would assume the Conservstive Party stands for such deplorable behaviour.
The NDP in Alberta had to walk away from an elected candidate because of her Twitter account.
A Federal Liberal candidate had to resign her nomination due to statements made in high school.

The majority of the electorate understands these are issues all parties have, therefore it does not become an election issue.

You're right....but pissing in a cup is so bizarre. It probably shouldn't reflect on the party, but you can only have so many of these things come up before I think it would start to have an effect on the voter. This hasn't been the best run for the Conservatives these past few weeks, but it hasn't hit them in the polls that much yet. I doubt many conservative voters would change their votes...but maybe some might stay home.

I've said it before but I could never run for office....to many skeletons in my closet.

All this sensationalism takes away from the real ISSUES
I am interested in where the party ideology fits with my own values/opinions on where this country should be headed. What amazes me is a guy who was caught on camera pissing in someone's coffee cup thought it was a good idea to run in federal politics.
Are we running out of people who want to be in public office? If so, we are all in trouble
  • No we have Elizabeth May.

    Well played haha

The real issues are dealt with by the people we elect. We can only vote for those selected by the parties to be put on the ballot; thus, candidate selection is important and does reflect on the party, even if only their due diligence.

It amazes me that the parties can't find out about these issues before the candidates have been selected; after all, as soon as their names are published those on social media can dig up the dirt within a few days. Maybe not coffee cup guy; that's just weird and I'm not sure where that video came from. The others, though, should have been obvious.

    ^^^^^^^

The video came from a tv show called "Marketplace" on CBC. They were doing undercover work to find out if customers were being overcharged and the hidden camera caught him in the act.

Candidate selection is important, but I think we must remember, we all make mistakes. Who hasn't spouted off about a political or social issue and said something off colour?
Who hasn't forwarded a humourous email which might offend a segment of the population?

Once again, I would advise anyone seeking public office to avoid social media, lest be prepared for the public flogging you will get. Someone will find the dirt, no matter how much dirt is swept under their own rug.

I actually find it amusing how much grief Duffy and Wallin have been getting. It shows how the media elite have lost touch with average Canadians. They really think they have done nothing wrong. I have the solution, abolish the Senate. Done.

    Who cares?
It will be the opposite in two weeks time and so on until it balances on election day of a majority conservative govt

So according to you there's no point in discussing election issues until we get the results on election day? That makes for a boring Canadian Politics thread, but whatever turns your crank.

I think if the post had a poll showing the conservatives were way out in front the response would be different. Besides.....as I'm sure you have noticed, with some, it's not about engaging in an interesting debate, it's about getting off on trying to wind people up. Like you said, whatever turns their crank.

Maybe getting people wound up will at least get them to go and vote...

  • Not sure if anyone is following the leadnow vote together campaign ( http://www.votetogether.ca/riding/list/?filter=swing )...but Feist, Dan Mangan and others have announced that they'll play shows in support.

Do you actually believe that website nonsense?
Wow, social media does a number eh.
    This is crap.
There is far too many tasks for the average voter let alone a swing voter to accomplish this.
    Crowdfunding? Really?
Come on Oct 19th and bring back reality.

I think he means the people here on amt...and I im sure we're all voting...

You hear the ndp are standing behind the anti-catholic church tweet guy? Good for them - his tweets, while unprofessional and worthy of public apology, were not all that far from majority opinion; I think a lot of people feel that way. Im catholic and I agree with him  Not like he pissed in the holy water or anything.
  • Mansbridge interviewing Mulcair on the National.
He is presenting well. I'm impressed
  • Mulcair just said he wants to abolish the Senate!
    Wow. That is really interesting.
  • That's been part of the ndp platform for years...
I like mulcair but I really wish he had carried layton's position on the Israeli occupation. I think it's a joke that every party in Canada maintains essentially the same stance on the topic.
