Driving back and forth to Boulder once at the end of June and then again last weekend.

June Ogallala, NE 3.89 out 3.84 back
Last weekend Ogallala, NE 3.49 out 3.29 back

    Boulder was still at $4.29-$4.49
But the next towns over were at $3.69

Big jump of 70 cents today up to $6.29 (for quality gas, not cheap stuff that clogs up engines).  I figured the big jump in price might be news related.  Nope, just a big jump in price.

I was just at work in northern Oregon and was shocked seeing some stations reading near $6.  I will never understand that kind of price disparity within the same country.

I read recently that explained some of the reasons it is so high in California.  The article talked about how shipping oil to the east cost and even central US via the gulf is cheaper than shipping it to here on the west coast.  Also, because of our population density, refineries are always on the edge of keeping up with production.  That is a bit unsettling.  I got to thinking about various ways production could be affect- like a bad earthquake or terrorism- and how screwed up things here would get in a big hurry.  We really do live on the edge.  Or is it the ledge?!

On the drive to Ottawa in early September for the PJ show, gas prices in upstate NY and near the border were a good half dollar more than prices near the city. Don’t recall seeing such a price difference in years past for upstate.

Also, if we think gasoline prices are high, just wait for the nat gas heating bills this winter. Prices are MUCH higher than petrol.

Approaching $3.50 in my neck of the woods again.

I wonder if people we post pictures of what they paid on facebook when they drop below 3 bucks again...doubtful. Though, they'll probably thank the Republican House. hahahaha

No. It’s because of the proximity to refineries.

Has nothing to do with business and environmental policies favorable to the oil and gas industry I guess?  They just decided to base a significant portion of their business in Texas for no particular reason?

Add to that one good factor- refineries in California produce gas that burns cleaner.  A third factor is the general higher cost of doing business in California (but I don't recall offhand why that is).
